50 years into the future a man by the name of Leonard Boltrik will invent a ship capable of terraforming other planets. He calls this ship Colony Ship 1, in 15 years, a colony on Mars will be reality. 3 years into the trip Samuel Klondike will invent a ship that can do it in seven years. 1 year later, Oscar Bravo makes one that can do it in 3. What fun it would be to see Colony Ship 1 chugging along to carry out mankind's dream, only to be passed by Colony Ship 2.

whose to say that Leonard won't sabotage Colony 2 such that, instead of going to Mars, it goes to Jupiter? Or that it turns begins to alter its flight plan so as to take a very indirect route, gettin there slightly after Colony 1, thereby securing his place in history.
