Age Differences

Mmmm just randomness. Of course I've noticed there are many people here in college and beyond, and then there are also people still in high school/not in high school. And so I was wondering, when talking to other people, when does your age stop making a difference? I see a difference when talking to a 5 year old, but when I discuss things with, say, someone who's 45, married with kids, whatever, I don't notice AS MUCH as a change. Sure, they know more stuff about taxes and driving, but maybe we've both somehow reached a maturity plateau?

And there are also those people who will never be mature ;) Uhhh, okay, I'm running out of things to say. Maybe I just wanted to discuss being old. Ugh.

Oh yes, another issue. When does the age gap between couples become obscene? You might hear about 70 year old men marrying young, voluptuous 18 year olds, but not often. Well, I don't know if that's obscene, but it just kinda disturbs me.

But in person, I mean. Online, it's much easier to treat everyone like an equal (unless they don't deserve it), but in real life, it's easy to be condescending to those younger than you.

I would say it is the opposite: in real life, where you can immediately judge the age of an addressee, you will treat them as such. In online, it is more difficult.

Back to age...I think maybe it stops becoming an issue in high school. When seniors date freshmen...but when your're in 8th grade, you wouldn't think of seeing a 5th grader, right? And when you're like 33 and 30, it's not a big deal at all anymore.

26.. 27 in a couple months.
I think in your 20's age stops mattering as much.
After the start of going to the bar. :P
The 18-19 y/o's I know are still all about partying, easy living, no real cares.
20 seems to be a bit of a turning point for a lot of people, when they realize they're "getting older" and need to take on some responsibilities.
The only differences beyond that are learning more about life, and expanding vocabularies, as far as I've seen. :P I was always told I was mature for my age, but I never really FELT like I fit in with "adult" conversation until I was in my 20's.
Then again, I never fit in with people my age when I was younger, either, because I was a bit (read: bit) more responsible in some ways.

As for the ages for dating, here's a rule that works: Your age, divided by 2, plus 7. I forget what age it breaks down at, but for younger people wondering if their relationship is a bit out of the norm, that works. :)
So me (26) and my fiancee (21) work. 26/2 = 13 + 7 = 20 as my min age.
And it shows in the conversations that we have. :)

Assuming your name is Alex, that's interesting. Grounding as a threat? Being grounded is different for many families. In my case it's my dad saying I'm grounded, then he forgets the next day. Lax on discipline, my parents are. (Yodaism for the day)

There's a lot that has to do with perspective. Sometimes, it takes living a few years to get a certain kind that will allow you to have common ground with people of various age groups. Sometimes, people have it more easily than others.

When I was 18, age meant a lot more to me than it does now. Nowadays, I have friends who are young enough to be my children.

Before that, who cares? Kids are kids. :P I wouldn't expect 12 y/o's to be having serious relationships.
As for whether the 'rule' is liked or not... *shrug* That's just what I hear everyone suggest as a way to have better odds of a relationship working.
God knows hardly any do, in the long run, anyway. :P
What's the divorce + separation rate at? 75%

Just if you go outside the bounds of that rule, eyebrows are likely to be raised. If you don't care about what others think (and it's not illegal) then... do whatever makes both people happy, I say.

And there are also those people who will never be mature ;) Uhhh, okay, I'm running out of things to say. Maybe I just wanted to discuss being old. Ugh.
The maturity level on here is very high indeed, especially when you realize that some of those still in HS are often more mature than many of those over 21. I've also talked with five-year-olds who were more mature than some on here. Maturity seldom equates to age, IMHO.

My husband is 7 years older than me, most of the time it really doesn't matter, but sometimes it's weird, like when he was in highschool I was in elementary school, so by the time I got to highschool things were different. We have most of the same nostalgic memorys (since he was born in 75 and me in 81) we both remember the 80's, and the 90's, he doesn't remember very much of the 70's and I wasn't around so it doesn't make much of a difference. There are times though when our terminology is off, for example when he was in highschool "hooking up" meant getting to know eachother or begining to date, when I was in highschool "hooking up" meant you had sex (most often meaning a one night stand) It's times like those when he says "you are too young" and I say "you are too old" things like he remembers when Regan wasn't president (Regan was president for most of my childhood.)

Anyway, as to age in general, I volunteer with ladies from 18-90 and it doesn't make much difference except when we talk about our kids, the ones who are 18 for the most part don't have any, the ones in thier 40's have teens, and the ones over 60 have kids who are in thier 30's, we don't have much common ground there, but otherwise we don't really notice much of a difference between us.

Yeah, although it's dying pretty fast. High electricity costs and softwood lumber dispute = bad for the paper mills that make up most of our economy. Jobs are being lost all over the place.
Lucky for me, my fiancee doesn't want to live here, so I won't be going down with a sinking ship. ;)

How... cute!

Ok, I've been in Japan too long.

Ahem, any case. The rule of thumb for me is that after 22, most people settle down and start acting mature at least most of the time. There are, as always, exceptions. I also feel that after 22, age differences in dating don't matter as much. My fiancee is 8 years older than I am, but most people assume she's younger than me. We also really don't notice the age difference at all (But that may be due more to the cultural differences).

I'm 27 BTW.

Ugh.
i think that anywhere between the ages of 13 and 16, depending on the person, is when one reaches such a 'maturity plateau'
and it never goes away again
i mean, i'm dating a 15 y/o (nearly 16) and she's more mature than many, many people i know (or who are on here)... so it might not be a function of just age but life experiences and mental development

when conversing with people on here or IRL, i tend to just communicate in my normal way and assume they're mature enough... *shrugs* (though, of course, i change what i communicate about)

though i don't tend to modify my behaviour much for kids below that plateau because i don't have much experience there and just don't know how one should act. when we were in germany over easter last year to visit family, people kept on saying i was good with the kids but fuck knows how

I'm a 22 year old postgraduate student. Generally, I have no problem talking to people notably older than me (more than a year or two, I mean); indeed, my partner is 32, and one of my best friends is 63. I got on better with my teachers and lecturers at school and university than I did with my peers. Anyone that knows me will tell you I was born old, and show no signs of growing down.

As for those younger than me...well, I can't talk to children at all, nor do I have any wish to do so. I can hold some level of discourse with more mature and/or intelligent teenagers, which holds true for people of my own age as well.

Over the last few years our local gov't has fumbled around with trying to boost our tourism industry. Soon I think that's all this city is going to have left. "Come to Thunder Bay, if you enjoy the outdoors! Don't come looking for a well paying career, though... try out west, or down in southern Ontario."
Seems like almost everyone I know my age is planning to get out of this city. In a 5 year span, we lost 4000 people, for a city of 110000 people. And that was BEFORE all the mill closures were announced. I expect exponential shrinkage for this city, and surrounding towns.

well i'm not sure on my own thoughts on the matter. part of me agrees and thinks it should be a matter of maturity... but then another part of me realises that most 15 y/o people aren't generally as clued-up or mature (in terms of their attitude towards sex) as Amy is, and that having no laws - or, in the case of statutory rape, repurcussions - would just lead to potentially bad things..

but anyway, between me and Amy there will be no sex.
we'll abide by the law (neither of us wants to get in trouble) so... not until she is legal (which is 16 here, and in a little over a month...)
even then, i sincerely doubt that come the day of her 16th birthday we'll hop straight into bed, just that there will definatley be no sex till then. simple as that.

nothing stopping one having a fulfilling, loving and mutual relationship with someone who is technically "underage"

and i am 20

As for age differences in dating, I think the important thing is not the amount of years difference, but the proportional difference. Dating someone who's 14 when you're 24 is a bigger deal than dating someone who's 24 when you're 34 and it's really not that odd when you're dating someone who's 34 when you're 44.

When I was 14, I dated a 20 year old. Some people found that odd, but I was fairly mature for that age and still don't really see the problem (given that it was a non-sexual relationship). My current boyfriend (of almost three years) is 10 years my senior, but it's just never been an issue. If your maturity level is similar and you're not doing anything illegal, there's no reason why an age gap should be a problem.

Heres a pic of me last winter by the airplane that I rent.

Another old pic of me, I was just acting goofy.

Oh, I really like the flying pictures ^^ Nice perspective from the air. I'm one of those annoying people who likes to takes pictures outside of the airplane window whenever she goes flying places.

And I never posted in your thread about society, but if people didn't accept you, that's their loss. You seem like a really nice person, literate (always good on forums), and you have a lot to say.

I do too! I also like to go to airports taking pictures of airplanes landings and taking off. Face it, I am an aviation nut. Theres only one other person as obessed with airplanes as I am, and that was Howard Hughes Jr.

When did your "obsession" with airplanes start? I don't know what my passions are. Orchestra, photography, and Scholastic Bowl, maybe. But I can't call myself obsessed, just very interested. I also like knowing new people, but obsessions in that area is usually called "STALKER".

I used to do alot of traveling, mainly for surgery. After my travels were done I brought Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000. After that I started taking lesson, and I was hooked. To me, flying is like theraphy. I can be having a bad week, but seeing the view from 3,000 feet just makes me all mellow and cool. I love all forms of flight. From the big airliners, to the small animal birds.

I see you play the violin, that's pretty cool, I play the violin myself, but I call it fiddle. lol.

That's wonderful that you've found something that you can really enjoy. Violin? Hopefully you recognized ME and not my fake sister, not the girl next to me, and basically anyone Caucasian isn't me.

When I was little, I was terrified, but now I love to travel, probably because I go so rarely. But unfortunately, my flying trips have been limited just to Taiwan and Germany. I'd like to go to other places someday too. Ugh...now I should go sleep. You can always send me a message at my MSN if you want, if I'm on, that is. Or anyone else for that matter, that I've talked to in this forum. Thanks for talking!

Cool, you can message me at my MSN, YIM, and AIM. I should go to bed too, but what can I say, I am a night owl.
