I don't think I've ever seen snow that thick. In fact I think I've only ever seen settle decently where I live once (I've seen it settle more frequently in the countryside, but less and less frequently as the years go by).

This is officially the first blizzard I have ever experienced with thunder & lightning. Yes it was! Around 6am I heard a thunderclap, just thought it was a wind gust throwing around a garbage can. Called out of work, laid back down in bed, and FLASH... Lightning!?!?!? Then thunder. A few more after that. Yeah BIZZARE-O-WORLD.

:( We never get snow where I live - we did once, about seven or eight years ago, and that was seriously unbeliveably awesome - I'm talking drifts several feet deep, so naturally we had a huge ruck all day - but other than that nothing, apart from maybe aninch or so of muddy slush. Of course when I went to Austria we got shit loads and that was awesome, but thats all the way over in Austria.

Still, if there's that much snow where you are what are you doing indoors? Get out there with your mates and have a rumble!:D

For a while there some people were hoping that big Russian blizzard would head over this way and give us some snow. Then we realised it'd just snow all over Europe, there'd be a bit of snow in England, and it'd rain here.

Even if I dug my car out it isn't going anywhere. They won't plow until its over and there is currently 12" down there now. Just wait, there will be more. My good friend shovel helped me clear the pathway in front of my building and the three adjacent ones.

Snow blower = nice...but I live in an apartment building without a garage. Mr. Snow Blower isn't going to fit through the door into the apartment. So Mr. Shovel is my friend. I'm 22 my back doesn't hurt after doing walkways, driveways, or anything. Actually I spent my day at work lifting heavy stuff (sucks). It is pointless though to dig a car out when it'll be covered again in two hours. I'd rather do it once than four times.

Yeah, it's generally rather pointless to shovel in the middle of a snowstorm. Just be glad that it looks like it's coming down heavy and isn't blowing snow. That way when you do shovel it'll just be an even blanket of medium-depth snow, instead of strips of really deep snow.

Then again, I'd trade extra shovelling for deep drifts any day. <3 Oh snow, how I love you.

And you seem like kind of a dick for the amount of levity involved. Jesus! I'm a confessed Seattleite and we don't get much snow. Since moving to Bismarck, I've seen snow, but not that much. We get more wind and cold than snow here.

I was merely commenting that it seemed like a lot in MY experience. Why the hell do people have this asshole need to one-up others with regard to weather-related phenomena and then condescend or dismiss those who've never or only rarely experienced it? It's my right to be excited, Skeezix, so back the fuck off. If you've seen worse, then GOOD FOR YOU. I haven't seen snow like those pictures since I was five. If that somehow irritates you, sorry and tough shit.

When they plow I'll be alright. I have a Monte Carlo. While not 4WD it weighs 3,700 lb. My 3,400 lb. Lumina never got stuck and this is more powerful.

The one year in Seattle (1996) when we had lots of snow (for US, people, for US), my little Integra was high-centered on the two feet we had. Seattle snow is called "Cascade concrete" because it's very high in water content. I lived in a suburb (Everett) on a quiet dead-end street. Needless to say, snowplows, which were rare already, weren't coming to plow my street any time soon. I waited for it to stop that day, shoveled out my car and had to shovel about half a block's worth of clearance for my low-slung car. I was a high school teacher then and school had been canceled (Seattle area schools are notoriously wussies, but given the hilly nature of the terrain, the buses here can't take the grades and there's no alternate routes for many districts), so I went out for some salt for the walkway and came home satisfied with my effort. The next morning, I woke to discover school was still closed, which I expected, but not why. Overnight, 22 more inches had fallen. So I understand waiting until it's all over. At the time I was 26 years old, but worse for the wear after all that shoveling. My next car will have higher ground clearance.

Driving in snow is not too difficult, but there were a lot of transplants from warmer climates back home (mostly Californians), all slamming on their brakes or thinking their SUVs would make them immune to the laws of physics. Maintain pressure on the accelerator and stay off the brake as much as possible, and mostly, pay attention, and anyone can get through the snow in almost any car.

Aww, but being weather elitist is fun. :p

And I do it with the knowledge that there's other people laughing out there at what I think is a bad snowstorm, as well as there being people laughing at what I think is 'intolerably hot weather'. How can anybody live in places where it's consistantly hotter than 35°C? I would melt!

Very well. Fair play to you.

And I agree with you on 35C/95F+. I get lethargic and wet-noodly in that kind of heat. However, I'm adjusting to the cold here (I recently heard myself say that 28F/-2C heralded a week of "warmer" weather), so I suppose, with enough exposure and acclimatization, you can get used to anything. That said, the summer I spent with my ex-fiancee in her native Austin, Texas saw routine temps at or above 37C/98F. Three months of attempted acclimatization just didn't work. Hated it. Especially the fantastic energy expended on ridiculous amounts of air conditioning and the shock upon leaving an icy building for the lung-like air outside.

Also, I might've sounded harsher than I had meant or something. As in, I think it's perfectly understandable to be excited over that much snow. I'd be excited if we had that much snow as I utterly love snow. It just seemed more like 'OMG! Lot's of snow, yay!' level excitement rather than 'Holy shit, that's a freakload of snow!' level excitement.

But I will admit I was being asinine. I mean, someone from uh... Australia would probably be shocked by very little snow. Or something. Rar.

Yeah I remember. We had 78" that winter. One storm his us January, on a Sunday night and I was out of school for 2 days. It dumped close to 4 feet on us down in Elmont and the drifts were double that because of the Nor'Easter winds....

All you guys that want snow can have it. I'm sick of it- as far as I'm concerned, I don't want it anymore.

That IS a freak snowstorm. Especially that last picture. How were you able to get out?

Heh, there was a drift valley that rang precisely along our front path, so we could go out the front door. That was just the back door. Though it took us awhile to get rid of the drift that went along the back of the house. Seeing as I could stand on it and look into my bedroom window... shoveling it involved me sitting on top and hacking away while my dad scooped everything up.

Naw. Snow generally doesn't work like that. Worst case scenario is that you'd sink in to your waist, and then it's just a matter of flailing your way out. Though I do recall getting somewhat stuck in a large drift as a child and my dad pulling me out. I probably could've made it out on my own though.

True. Depends on the composition. I'd be worried about being up that high though.

Heh! I've done worse. Like walked along the snow cliffs that formed over a steep hill in that storm. They were probably something like 5-8 meters straight down to the road, both from the edge of the cliff itself and through the cliff to the ground. I've honestly never fallen deeper then my waist, though, and I often have to try for that. Snow gets pretty solid when it's packed in high enough drifts.

I can only dream of having snow like that again. Though for now I'd settle for even 20 cm. Stupid winter of little snow...

:( I wish we had snow like that...and I live in Canada. I just got back form 2 days at Marmot Basin and the rocks and snow were starting to show through the snow. Whats worse, where I live we're supposed to have like 2 to 3 feet of the stuff right now and we have none. It was like 10C out today and there is grass everywhere. Have fun in New York with all that wonderful snow.:(

NY has a great snow removal policy, it's the best in the nation. Let me explain. They suspend all alternate side of the street parking and wait until Spring comes. There's no policy better than that one except one, the Schmidt-Devlin policy. This is a great one. FORCE alternate side of the street parking and plow out the side of the street with payloaders and plows, put it into dump trucks. The next day, do the same for the other side.

Wouldn't that clear away all the cars though? Or is that the point?

Also, I know who's Devlin...who's Schmidt?

I don't know how it is in the bronx, but in Manhattan the streets are cleared VERY quickly. The snow management is really good. Another good New York strategy is, since the great blizzard of 189something, all power lines are required to be underground, stopping the black-outs we say yesterday in DC and Baltimore. Also, that blizzard was a driving reason for the construction of the subway, an easy(er) to maintain through natural disasters method of transportation (although they do get screwy, it's usually reliable after a short while).
