Battle Royale

The movie. I just watched it. Anyone else seen it? It's an adaption from a Japanese novel...the movie itself is in Japanese.

The basic premise is -

A group of students (I forget how many exactly. Thirty or so, I think.) are kidnapped and taken to a secluded island. They are each given a bag containing a map, bread, water, a compass, a flashlight and a watch. They are also randomly allocated a weapon or other object. This object can be anything from a submachinegun, to a pair of binoculars, to a lid from a pot, to a GPS map showing the location of all the other students. After three days, all bar one must be dead and they will be declared the "winner". This is further complicated by the fact that all the students are classmates and know eachother quite well. To make sure that they actually do kill eachother, an explosive device is placed around their neck. Any attempt to remove it, and it will explode. If they walk into a forbidden area, it will explode. If nobody dies within a 24 hour period, they explode. If there is more than one person alive at the end of the three day limit, they will explode.

...anyone else think this is a damn cool premise for a movie? Why didn't this win an academy award? It rocked.

(The acting was bad, but hey, that makes it even more of a classic. And there were Japanese schoolgirl outfits, too, if you're that way inclined.)

...Or how about a multiplayer computer game for that matter?

Hmm, let me put it boldly...

I actually wouldn't say that the acting was bad in terms of a contemporary japanese film- they seem to love chewing up the scenery (maybe it's their love of cartoons...).

Eh, the first two are Japanese festivals (and we all know that the Japanese are crazy in that regard) and the third is a fantasy & horror festival. So, pffft. :p

Yeah, it wasn't really terrible. Considering that the actors playing the students were really quite young they did a better job than a lot of Western teen-type movies.

Oh, but a serious question, for a change: I didn't quite get what the "objects" everyone got were there for. Like, were they for killing the other ones, or self-defense, or both, or something else entirely? In the first and third case - how exactly do you kill someone with the lid of a pot? Now self-defense I could see, obviously, and "something else entirely" could well be, say, to cover a pot, but killing?

Tsk! It was a thoroughly entertaining movie with an original premise. That's all that should count. *mutters about film critics* :p

That was for them to figure out. They could use them in any way they saw fit... but there were no real "puzzles" for them to solve, if that's what you were getting at. You're right, the pot lid was used for self defence.

I first saw it about four years ago. It's one of my favourite films. Your OP doesn't really do it justice; it's far more than just senseless killing.

Well, yeah, I guess, but I just wanted to outline the basic premise without giving away the plot.

Yeah, saw it when it came out, it owned.

I heard it had trouble finding a US distributor though, because of the media self-censorship over there. :(

Obviously, you have never had some grab a peice of metal in both hands and swing it at your head as hard as possible. Causing Pain=Weapon in my book.

Not only was the acting bad, but the script was horrible. And I'm not just talking translation, the original Japanese script was hideous. I speak a little Japanese, and one of my friends just got back from nine years in Japan: he and his Japanese wife agree with me.

Oh, and the Japanese critics hated it, too.

It is one of the most f***ing stupid movies I have ever seen.

That is a kickass movie. Part of me wants it to be a computer game, but Im afraid they would just ruin it somehow. Incidentally the silent hill movie looks pretty good. heres hoping.

You can recover from such things fairly quickly, and so the only long term effect is that my life is just a bit more enriched then the lives of the general, nonconcussed populous.

American remake? (Oh my God no!)

Though I think I'll have to step in to the defense of the sequel. I don't think that BR II was a balls up. It was a lot different. It looked at different things, to come to it thinking it will just be a repeat of the first isn't fair.

True it isn't as good as the first film, though it is a complete wash out, and is worth watching imo (provided you don't come to expect another Battle Royale).

And don't ask me about the teacher in the rugby kit. I have no fucking idea either.

I watched the first 15 minutes of it.

After that point my stomach was significantly destabilized to the point of illness.

In short: The movie was a poor excuse for blood and guts.

It's not just about killing you know. The whole thing's symbolic. Didn't know it was a book. That would be a wild read.

There is, and has been for a while.

I picked my copy up a few years ago at a bookstore in town, so you should be able to get it from Amazon.

Yep. But I get the feeling that the book would be less about killing than the movie was and better for an actual plotline. They usually are.
