I've been using Limewire for about a year now and I really don't like it. Do you guys know of any other file-sharing program, that's safe. I've tried Kazaa, but that screwed up my computer. Any help is appreciated

Any help is appreciatedI used to use Kazaa as well and i had no end of frustration with that so i know where you're coming from. Limewire for some reason was so... slow. I am using the latest version of Kazaa Lite called Kazaa Resurrection. It seems to work fine, no spyware, no pop-ups. The only thing is you might have to look for it because the free version is not being offered by the company anymore, or it wasn't when i got it.

K-Lite Pro.

I liked that, but my computer kept eating it. I'd have it downloaded and everything, it'd work for awhile and then the computer would suddenly start telling me that the program didn't exist or couldn't run or suchwhat. Pfft.

So now I just use Limewire, though not often.

You might try a bittorrent program like BitLord, I've been using it for a while now, it usually works pretty well...

It's pretty standard practice from what I understand--you don't talk about other games on Nationstates, kind of like Fight Club.

On a side note, ever notice how much harder it is to type when you've got a bottle and a half of wine in you?

You're paying for a program that allows you to share data you have the right to. That there is illegal stuff on it is completely incidental.

A crowbar "allows you to steal."
A computer "allows you to steal."
A car "allows you to steal."
A brain "allows you to steal."

See what I mean? I personally advocate everyone in the world obtain lobotomies in order to help the universe become a better place (and protecting corporate profits is always a good thing too).

Seconded. Your (Ritlina's) posts always sort of make me wince. And it always translates in my mind as you yelling. :p

Edit: To respond to the actual topic at hand, I use Limewire and like it for the most part. And yes, it's free. K-Lite used to be my favourite, but you can't find it free anymore, and it stopped working on my computer.

I had Morpheus and Limewire. I used them both.... at the same time! Big mistake. I was down loading way too much and it fried my pc. It hasn't been the same since.
Anyways the player on Morpheus is pretty good. The player on Limewire stinks. I would be careful though with either or any of these programs. You never know what you might download.
Say, does anyone here ever wonder if the jilted artists or record companies might be putting viruses on these sites with revenge in mind?

What exactly is wrong with LimeWire? I just got the program and haven't really used it yet. It's not like it will mess up your computer or let the music people track you down will it?

Probably not.... Just use caution. You can rename any file you download. This means that someone can label any old virus with the name of the latest hit and you could download it. What I did was look at the file size. Almost anything you search for will have a multitude of download choices. If the file you are looking for is a regular song, compare file sizes amongst your choices. I look for uniformity in file size to make my choices. What I mean by this is that if I want to download Sevendust's "Angel's Son" (which is an excellent song btw) I would start with the search. When my choices for downloading popped up I would check the file sizes. They will mostly be the same but if one was too small I would not take it. It could be a number of things like maybe its only a partial file or of low quality. But I wouldn't take the chance.

You also want to watch when it starts downloading--if it's coming through at an obscenely fast speed, chances are it's a file full of static.

Alright. I have been told that downloading any new songs carries a higher risk of you being caught and being sent a letter warning you to stop. That keeping to older songs is better to avoid this.

Hmmmm... I doubt that they will send you an angry letter. I've got 1546 files downloaded new and old and never got any letter. I did, however, get the nastiest virus I have ever heard of. I still cannot get any p2p programs to work. Maybe they don't send you a letter....

Get limwire pro, its way faster and it searches files and blocks out viruses, just dont download something stupid. (Like if your dLing a game, get the 400mb one not the 850kb one, thats common sense)

Depends what you're looking for.

I find Soulseek is the only way to find complete bootlegs and rare albums.

If you want top 40 stuff, stick with Limewire...

First of all, I'm already slightly biased against such file-sharing programs (on the basis that it'd be nice if they weren't mis-used, but recognition that IP gets circumvented daily) so I'm not one to use them myself, but have absolutely no problem with others doing so, as long as they take their own responsibility... (Me, I steal all my stuff from Usenet binary groups... Kidding!)

Right, so (caveat out of the way) I have friends who use LimeWire, and it's amazing how much Malware they get on their computer... If only I could get over my natural reservations and research BitTorrent/etc to find a 'safe' one for them to use... (The trouble is, I know they download copyright stuff...)

(Now, at work, I battle against all unauthorised file-serving, but then that's the price I pay for being a Security Professional... ;))
