I can tell you right now that you're going to get seriously razzed for not including metal as its own option. Rightfully so, too. Hmph.

So now that's it's easy to tell what kind of music I listen to most often, I will skip over that part and go straight to the bands, which at the moment include Symphony X, Dream Theater, Kamelot, and Queensryche.

What exactly is indie rock? I've never really understood. When I tell people what I like, they usually say that I like a combination of indie rock and old-school rock. Hmmm.

Metal.

There, you can vote for that now too. I have the "other" option for all of those other genres of music that I can't pick out of my head at the moment. Like now that I think of it...

Country(Folk, etc)
"Goth" music
New age (Celtic, Ensembles, etc)
Adult Alternative

Oh, and Japanese pop (J-pop) because I don't understand why so many people at my school are newly fascinated with the Japanese culture and obsess themselves with L'Arc En Ciel (or whatever it is), Malice Mizer, etc etc.

Poll for music = BAD THING. Just some wise words you should consider before creating a poll for music. No matter how careful you are, even if there is an "other" button, you will end up offending a bunch of people because their little nich of music didn't get into the poll. A warning from someone who has seen the destruction of such threads that are foolish enough to put polls into music.

It's kinda amusing sometimes seeing what "older" people think about music. For one thing, my dad STILL thinks that every female singer on the radio is either Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. Not kidding. So Fleetwood Mac is on, and he goes, "So is this Britney's new song?"

No, Dad.

Incidently, one of the trends I am exceedingly glad for these days is the return to college radio. Ever since Peter Frampton fucked it all up for fringe artists by proving that a musician could sell out a stadium, the music industry has become the shallow pursuit of the "next big thing".

College radio, that last bastian of true independent music, is staging a comeback and I couldn't be more pleased. Especially since some of my stuff gets played on Rice Radio (KTRU 91.7 FM in Houston) from time to time. ;)

Indie Music is on the rise again. Hooray!

Also, a casual mention to some of my American friends who are music fans: don't discount the rest of the world. Even if you don't understand the lyrics, listen to some of the stuff coming out of India and the Far East lately. Terrific music! Expand your mind!

I dunno. No matter How overdone it is, it still interests me to see what other members of forums listen to. What amazes me is how many metalheads I can find online, since they're few and far between in my hometown. It's nice to know I'm not one of the only ones out there who listen to certain bands.

My personal favourites are Blind Guardian, Nightwish, Opeth, Kamelot, Iron Maiden, Finntroll, and Tristania. Yeah, mostly power and symphonic metal, though I tend to appreciate most subgenres of metal, barring the majority of 'Nu-Metal' (whether or not that counts as metal is subject to much heated debate).
And apart from metal? Well, I have musicals. My personal favourites include Les Misérables (especially the 10th Anniversary recording and the Original French Concept Album), The Phantom of the Opera (Original Broadway Cast), and Oliver.
I also appreciate more classical music, especially early Baroque composers such as Purcell, Dowland, Handel and Bach. My other favourites are Puccini Debussy, Fauré, and Satie. I also listen to some 'New Age' music, such as Loreena McKennitt, the Mediaeval Baebes, and Värttinä (a Finnish folk band).

Sorry if my post's a tad long-winded, but once I think of one band, album, or composer I like, I immediately think of another I'd like to add. I'm not one who takes well to picking just a few favourites.

It's intersting what role lyrics can play in a song for people, and how the importance placed on them varies so much. I think that for me, they should either be meaningful, or not even try to be. So for me it's either Simon and Garfunkel and Opeth or else Mozy Fruvous and Finntroll.

I'm a melody person, being a singer and having played the oboe for a few years. Besides, the treble line is usually what the ear picks up the most readily. But I'm starting to enjoy good percussion line and nifty guitar riff, even if I only tapdance and I can only play one or two chords on a guitar.

I play the violin in an orchestra outside of school, and so when I listen to full orchestral music, it's usually the violin part that my ear catches, like you said, the treble line.

I like harmony though too, I play viola in my school orchestra, and it's amazing how much violas are underappreciated, or how almost no one knows what one is. Eh? Viola? What's that? The one between your legs? VY-ola?
