Hey everyone. New to the threads and to NS. Looks like you guys are a bunch of chatterboxes in here, I don't know how you keep up with all the threads!

I was also wondering what everyone's stance was on the flag-burning issue. Should it not be allowed, or is it exercising free speech?

Personally, I see it as just a piece of fabric. People should be allowed to do whatever they want with it, but if some hippies want to burn it to make a political statement, then more power to them.

To those of you that aren't American- what are the flag burning laws in your country? Is it allowed? Do people protest the law that is in place? What do you think about it?

If you buy a flag it's your property. End of story.

Why shouldn't someone be allowed to burn a flag?

"Hey buddy, you can't burn that flag, my daddy died for that flag"
"Really? I got mine at K-Mart"
"Hey buddy, don't burn the flag, my daddied died in KOREA for that flag"
"<chuckles> Well, isn't that ironic, because this flag was made in Korea..."

yeah. My grandfather was anti-flag burning he would say "countless Americans have died for that flag"
and I would say "no, they died so that we could have the freedom to fly it"
and he would say "yeah"
then I would add "or burn it"
and he would say "GO TO YOUR ROOM!!!!!!"

It always seemed to me that it was only really Americans who cared about having their flags burnt. It's what comes from not having a proper head of state.:) You see I'd get really pissed off if someone set fire to the Queen, but they can burn as many flags as they want.

Personally, i wouldn't give two shits if someone set fire to the Queen. She'd probably ask them "and what do you do?" as they poured the petrol on her.

Her mother always had to avoid naked flames as well, because of all the gin in her system.

Ah, the good old "countless brave soldiers gave their lifes for this flag" argument... I never got that one.

Countless people died for Nazi Germany and the Swastika. Should we therefore not allow any burning of red flags with swastikas on them?
Countless people died for communism. No badmouthing communism, therefore?
The list goes on...

Burning the US flag as a form of protest is protected under the Constitution. It's stupid, and highly aggravating ( at least to me ), but it's part of the price of freedom. I just hope that I'm never around when someone does it, though. I tend to become a bit ... volitile when things I respect are desecrated, although I'm willing to accept the consequences of beating the living hell out of some ignorant asshole who so richly deserves it. :D

Threatening free speech with personal violence is only marginally more acceptable than threatening it with state violence.

Provided that you bought the flag, you can burn it or wear it as a toga, I don't really care. Though, I would recommend that you not attempt both at the same time, while I still wouldn't care, you might find a flaming toga somewhat unpleasant.

If you burn a flag, you had to have bought it first, and they'll all made in China these days. :D

all we have to do is mandate that a "real" flag is made of fireproof material. that way no one can burn THE FLAG. anything that can be burned isnt really the flag, its just fabric printed with a flag pattern.
