With all this talk of snow, I have to ask...

How do you prefer to make your hot chocolate/cocoa? With water? Milk? Little mix packets? Powdered cocoa? Some other way? And how about marshmellows? Big ones? Little ones?

I use pure cocoa, 10% cream, and chocolate liqueur to sweeten it. Pure decadence in a double-tall mug.

hot chocolate all the way.

best stuff i got back from a shop in Brooklyn, NY, while on a school trip there. cook it up in a pan, very slowly, with full-fat milk is the key. microwave it and it just goes nasty (unlike other powdered stuff), but this was like drinking sweet, molten chocolate in a cup... so good! :D

Yes, avoid the microwave at all costs. I suggested 10% cream (coffee cream), though homogenised milk (3.25% cream) would also do well. As PM says, heat it in a pan.

Microwave or boil milk. Stir in cocoa powder, and cut the mixture with about one half-part coffee

Fill the mug up 3/4 with water, put the cocoa powder in, heat it and then fill it up with milk for taste and cooling it off a little. Love it that way, marshmellows added or not.

Normally I just use powder and milk, microwaved together, but having read all this I'm gonna have to go and try some crazy mix with cinammon and things. This will either be the most glorious success ever or it will be more terible than a thousand and one flaming orphans stabbing themselves with a thousand knives, and because there's only a thousand kinves two orphans have to use the same knife and their blood mixes and in the autopsy they're revealed to have AIDS and are labelled as gay and not afforded a Roman Catholic burial. That's exactly how awful it has the potential to be.

^^^ What the hell just happened there?! I don't even know.

I usually use some powder with milk, the best being to cook the powder in the milk (mix the cold milk and the powder, and then warm them together on hot fire, while constantly mixing). Then, take a piece of bread (lovely french bread if you can) with salty butter on it, and eat all those together, yum yum :D

The loveliest hot chocolate I ever tasted was in the stand of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela during the latest Fête de l'Humanité. No idea how they did it, but as far as I saw, they cooked the cacao beans in the milk directly, with some cinnamon and other stuff... was lovely :D :D :D I think during the whole week-end I came to buy "one last more cup" at least 5 or 6 times :)

Noooooooooo! How could this happen? What the hell? etc etc

This might just be the height of misfortune - I go down to the kitchen, all pumped up and ready for some hot chocolate, and BAM! I open the cupboard to find a complete and total absence of chocolate powder! This sucks man!

Mmmm mmm... wow, that sounds good.

I usually heat the milk (4%) in a pan to just scalding (don't boil it, or it changes the milk). I mix about 50/50 cocoa powder/sugar in the cup, with just enough warm milk to make it smooth, and then put in the hot milk on top, and mix it. I sometimes add cinnamon/vanilla/mint/whatever if I'm in the mood. Just today I opened some Hershey's Special Dark cocoa powder I'd gotten and made some cocoa with that. Oh, it was GOOD. I think next time I'll try adding a bit more cocoa, and a bit of cinnamon, and see how it is.

With all this talk of snow, I have to ask...

How do you prefer to make your hot chocolate/cocoa? With water? Milk? Little mix packets? Powdered cocoa? Some other way? And how about marshmellows? Big ones? Little ones?

2 tablespoons of Green & Black's Fair Trade Organic Cocoa whisked into hot 1% milk, two teaspoons of sugar, and a splash of peppermint schnapps.

Add more cocoa if you want it more chocolatey; add more sugar if you want it sweeter; use whole milk if you want it creamier.

Packets? YUCK!!!!

I'm lazy, so I buy the best premade chocolate milk, put it in the microwave, and add 15-25% whipped cream.
