NYPD Muscle Cars

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Police Department is adding the muscle of the old "General Lee" to its fleet of cars.

The department has announced plans to buy a string of 2006 Dodge Chargers to track down speeders.

The 1969 version of the Charger "starred" in "The Dukes of Hazzard" television show and last year's movie version.

There will be a V-six version of the muscle car patrolling the streets of New York's five boroughs, and a V-eight version on the highways.

Why go with such a powerful car? Leonard Lesko, who oversees the NYPD's fleet of cars, says speed matters when it comes to trying to keep up with all those flashy foreign cars on the road.

Suddenly this makes me that much more likely to be the type of chick that hits on the cops, while I'm supposed to be doing something perfectly respectable. Like shopping. Or getting to my friend's show.

LOL well have you seen most of NY's finest? Most i've seen (and in manhattan i've seen many) are overweight, angry, obnoxious, and rude.
But hey to each their own huh? :D j/k

Yeah, I've seen 'em.....gross, the lot of them. But it's not beneath me to raise a poor guy's hopes if he has a cool car.

Besides, I'd never actually get involved with any of them, they've got nothing on my boyfriend. And even if they are possibly better than him, they're probably not as quirky, so poo on 'em anyway.

so you should seduce them, then club them over the head with their nightstick, steal their money and drugs (most NYPD has drugs) then take the General out for a spin.

Bah, high speed car chases are dangerous.

If you really want to catch a criminal then just give chase so they panic, bring over the police helicopter. They hear the helicopter or look up, they're too concerned with the police car. Get the police car to back off. Get the helicopter to follow them to where ever they go. Arrest them and then charge them for expenses and services rendered by the police department.

You ever seen a NYC "high speed chase"? The only few I've ever seen got totally gridlocked in traffic. Only one of them, however, involved the police actually approaching the suspect's car....I guess the rest of the time they're slamming their hands against the steering wheel thinking "If only the traffic were clearer! Now I'll never catch him! Aw, geez....he's three cars up!"

NYC chases last like 5 minutes at max. When I was living on staten island there was this one guy who I watched speed off after being pulled over to elude the police. I saw him 2 exits down pulled over again. (BTW 2 exits on SI expwy = 3 miles)

I almost prefer those cops. There's something disconserting about getting a ticket from a nice polite guy whose demeanor says "I'm sorry I have to do this guys, It hurts me more than it hurts you." At least you get to feel superior when you've got a ticket from a guy whose just bitter and angry at his fast food pysique and a world that lives a better life than he is ever likely to.

And that new class of cops is getting all the more common with college recruitments and their being compelled to issue tickets for stuff that they know is bullshit.

Yeah. Police don't have to move fast to catch you. They just have to already be where you're going. You can't outrun a radio.

:D I suppose the thought to get out the car and walk over would never cross their minds, just as the thought to get out the car and leg it would never cross the the criminal's mind.
