A friend took me to her youth group the other day and the minister made a statement which bugged me: God is jealous. Specificaly jealous for our worship. This bugged me, what's he jealous of? I've been told that all human emotions are reflections of God's, but serriously, what's God jealous of? Any ideas?

God is Jealous of Chuck Norris and the Rise of Chuckianity. But he need not worry there is always an open seat for him.

God is jealous of us worshipping other gods.

Thus, the first commandment.

Wouldn't it be simpler to just smite those who worship other Gods? Why bother with jealousy when you can smite people?

He gave us free will. It'd be bad PR too.

Plus, I got a feeling He got sick of the prophets and messiahs after about 1 CE.

Exodus 20

3 "You shall have no other gods before [a] me.
4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.
5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments. "

[a] or besides

So.. either God acknowledges here that there are other things worthy of worship or He doesn't like the idea of people worshipping something unworthy.
The word "jealous" to me implies the former; but that may be a translation issue.

If god can feel sympathy and anger than god should be able to feel jealousy. Otherwise the 2nd commandment wouldn't be needed really.

Unless he feared the other gods...

And so you have figured it out.

But in reality this is just a reflection of how crappy of a God the Christians (and jews and muslims) worship.

I was more thinking since in the Old Testament there is only God the father, he may have been jealous of the other two

The word "god" can also be use for "idol".

What does the God have to fear of sex, money, or Stalin?

god is something no one knows anything about, so it wouldn't make much sense for me to say it can't anything, but jelousy is a weakness, certainly beneath the dignity of anything calling itself a supreme being.

ok, God made man in His image right... so He has emotions at least resembling ours... God made us to praise Him, but not forcedly, He wants our willing devotion... and when we scoff Him, and His creation of us, it can reasonably make Him jealous, moreover, in the Bible it says that we are to fear God, which, really, what is fear of God, how many Chrisitans do you know who do so from terror? i dont know very many, and i am a God-fearing person... why? because God is an insane vengeful hating god? no, it is because He has deserved my respect, and my awe, and my fear of His Mightiness (I know that isnt the question, but I have had it brought up, so i figured it was fairly relevant) also the Bible say "For who can know the mind of God" which is to say, what He does, and how He feels are completely beyond the human experience, perhaps it is a jealousy that is not exactly as we think of it, and there need be no other gods to earn His jealousy, merely that He created us to serve, and worship Him, and when we worship the idols of this world, that will make Him jealous, because we outright ignore Him, and as far as God being 'above' jealousy, being an Almighty, Omnipotent being comes with some major perks, for example, He can stay up late, ruin His appetite on cookies, or choose to feel any emotion He wishes to feel, theoretically without being questioned, honestly... can't we assume that His intellect is beyond ours, so maybe He understands why He is jealous.

God is jealous because to be jealous is to covet what somebody else has, and for God to covet completes the circle of hypocrisy.

Same reason God says "Don't commit Adultery", then gets his only begotten son by making another man's wife pregnant.

Same reason God says "Don't kill (or murder or whatever translation you like)", then kills the children of egypt to get at the pharoah.

He does all these things because he's God the Father, and he wants to make sure we know that he doesn't have to follow his own rules, because he's older and bigger.

You see, when you're powerful, you don't have to practice what you preach.

Good question.

What I was trying to express was that God, Yahweh, doesn't have to fear gods per se. Another god, other than God, can be money. A god can be anything. The word "god" doesn't always mean a divine being, it can mean an idol, the golden calf that did what? Nothing.

There's big problem on the net where people say the word "god" when the mean "God" and vice versa. They have two differnent meanings.

Did I answer you question or no?

I'd check out the local temple, if you got one in Alaska! Jews love it when you ask them questions about the Old Testament, and they'll give you big helping of the Jewish "communion" too, which is much better than the Christian counter part by the way. After which, my local Rabbi gives us Hershy's...mmm....
