No really I'd say NYC, I'm from Michigan (thus the Detriot reference) but NYC is a cool place, I've been there twice and both times were a lot of fun. Plus my favorite MLB team, the Yankees, are in NYC.

You put in Chicago (who the heck likes Chicago?!?) and D.C., New York and Boston, but not Philadelphia or Baltimore. (Or Wilmington, DE, which is nicely nestled between the two, and mostly part of that whole swath of north-east corridor.)
The trouble with these polls is there are too many cities to give 10 options.
San Francisco of the ones listed, my favorite will always be San Jose, CA though ;)

Really, thats funny because I got the impression that those were North and South American cities, you know, after the continents called North and South America, where they are located. There is no continent called America, only a country. So while a Peruvian surely wouldnt mind being called a South American, he would find it strange if you called him simpley an American.
The U.S. is America, which is located in NORTH America...whether or not you wish it to be.

Here's an idea, let's look at how the word is used in other circumstances:
If someone in the U.N. said: "All Americans are retarded" Do you think the Mexican delegation would be offended?
On the flip side, if someone in the U.N. said: "All North Americans are retarded" Do you think they would be a bit angry?

i have been to many cities, and some of the smaller ones have personalities, but of the large metro areas(san francisco aside)most don't really have a distinct personality(a flavor maybe)but to me..an opinion..philly is pretty unique.
thats not to put down others..i love nyc(hate the giants,yankees,mets..i don't mind the jets too much..and their hockey teams suck..lol)but philly has a hardworking, blue collar vibe, almost small townish for a large metro area.
and at the same time has alot of historic/cultural feelings..pretty unique.
i was at the game were we pelted the crap out of the cowboys with snowballs, and dumped a bunch of snow on them going into the tunnel.although i must admit,i probably got hit with more snowballs then the cowboys, cause of candy arms up in the 700 level not reaching the field!

Yeah I lived in NYC for about 2 years on Staten Island, and I gotta say I've been all over manhattan and most of the other bouroughs, and even though Manhattan has a lot of stuff to do, there isn't anything that you can't find a cheaper and better substitute in philly. Philly probably has more personality than most cities listed on that poll if not all of them...and besides most people in NYC are dillholes.

I did what most people call suicide. I used to be a big cowboys fan, but really only to get under my families skin. Well I once wore a cowboys jersey (hidden under my hoodie of course, I do not have a death wish:p ) in the 700 level at the Vet during a cowboys gamesitting next to the guy with the inflatable helmet and cape, and the rest of the animals they have in the 700 level. Great time though.

Savannah is pretty sweet. You're right it's very laid back, people are so damn nice it's scary. Beach only 15 minutes one direction, downtown (river street) 15 minutes the other way. Cigs are only 3 bucks a pack, gas is cheap, and its been 60 degrees all week. Can't say the same for philly they were supposed to get a foot of snow today so I don't miss the weather too much.

But honestly, just because you might get kidnapped if you do an adventure travel thing through a civil war doesn't mean that an entire continent is unsafe.
Of the cities listed, I picked Dallas, largely because it's the only city of the ten that I've been to.

It seems like the only people that have problems with Americans calling themselves Americans, are pissed off Euros. The Canadians that like America dont care, because they arnt sitting there nitpicking ways to piss off Americans, while the Canadians that DONT like America dont care because they dont want to be reffered to as something that would be shared in common with an American. As for South Americans and Central Americans, I have never met one that isnt happy being a Cuban or a Mexican, but feels the un patriotic need to establish a new title for his nationality, because his countrys name isnt good enough for him.

I miss Puget Sound.
I'm teaching in Bismarck, and it's not nearly as bad as I was led to believe be weather reports and folks who think of it as "flyover country". True, it has no nightlife to speak of and finding a restaurant that can actually produce something not laced with the four Upper Midwestern Food Groups (sugar, salt, grease and dough) is difficult at best, but it's easily the safest city I've ever lived in and the people here are about as nice as people get in cities over 50k in size.
So my vote went for Seattle, traffic, taxes, warts and all. Best seafood, best beer, most aggravating sports teams, best geography. *Sigh* I'll be back in the summer. I liked Boston when I visited, for the history alone as well as the Southie accent). Houston was huge and scary to drive in, but the neighborhoods I spent time in were very nice -- humid as hell. Dallas seemed pretentious to me, but very upscale. San Francisco was tought to get around in but had some incredible night spots (don't visit in the summer unless you like fog). New York is (to quote Huey Lewis) everything they say. I saw the Charles Mingus Big Band in an East Village place called the Time Out's basement. Out-fucking-standing. Saw the Blue Man Group at the Astor Place Theater.
Never been to Chicago, but the music group tour from my college is heading there next year. I can't wait to see the Magnificent Mile (I hope they haven't banned all street musicians by then, I wanna see the bucket players). Never been to Los Angeles, I suppose it speaks for itself. San Diego was gorgeous, but I'd get sick of all that sun all the time. The Zoo there was actually kinda depressing -- seeing leopards caged up and somehow sensing that they knew they were caged and hated it. Sea World was the exact opposite. Old town and the biggest margarita I've ever had -- that's some outstanding Mexican food.
Never been to DC or Miami. I'd like to go, though.
Still, Seattle's my home. I love it.

Probably Austin, Texas. It's the IT capitol of the South and the filming location of Office Space. Not to mention it's got nice weather, a great economy, the 4th best business school in the country, and is the least conservative county in Texas.

Chicago is easily the best.

Probably Austin, Texas. It's the IT capitol of the South and the filming location of Office Space. Not to mention it's got nice weather, a great economy, the 4th best business school in the country, and is the least conservative county in Texas.
And we're the healthiest city in America. ;)

Corpus Christi is almost as "blue" as Austin... If only didn't have so many small farm towns surrounding it (Bishop, Kingsville, Raymondville).
Port Aransas is pretty much completely blue (where I used to live).

Oi... Sallad is crappy. I've been there three times, and I've not wanted to stay to look around for even five minutes. Such a dull, conservative shithole.

Inspired by my other thread..Whats your favorite American city?
Montreal... followed by Buenos Aires. But they're not in the poll for some reason...
What about Vegas? My Love lives there.

I like Phoenix Arizona. :p
quite frankly i don't much favor cities at all. sure the're fun places to visit to ride the trolleys, eat at exotic restaurants, and spend a pleasant afternoon exploring the nearby university engineering library.
but the're flat out misserable as places to live. and i've never lived in one that wasn't.
now of cities i have lived in, and mostly i've lived in smaller town, i mean really small towns, like norden california, population 34, or colfax population 1025 for most of the time i was growing up there, but portland oregon is as interesting and gratifyingly quirky as citys get.
i like the bay area, meaning san francisco, but not just the city itself, but the entire regeon served by its interconnected transit lines. and i thought denver was pretty cool, i recognized scenes from return to the planet of the apes, when i passed through there 30 years ago. but only portland oregon has both the smallest and largest urban parks, to my knowledge, in the u.s.
it has forrest park, which is basicly just a pretty good size chunk of forrest. i camped out there for six months one time when i was homeless. it also has post hole park. which is pretty much what the name implies, and a delightful backstory, a marker that tells it, and an anual cockroach regatta.
portland wasn't a good place to look for work, though maybe not as bad as seattle in that reguard, but as a place to get stuck when your out of luck, well i'll just say portland was kind to me. the kindest city i've ever lived in. and it has all the essential amenities of a world class city; trolleys, exotic restaurants and university engineering libraries. but wait there's more. a lot more really. and a lot more then i have words for or the incentive to make them sound more interesting, except to say its also a transgalactic nexus. where doors appear in walls that never had doors one day and dissappear the next. where there's a book store in a building that used to be part of a brewery and its bigger then some of the entire towns i've lived in. the book store that is. i am of course refering to powel's. there are other interesting little nook bood stores too. like wriggly cross station. started by a couple of porsfoids. and then of course there's PorSFiS, the portland science fiction society, and orycon's. at least there were when i was up there. there was also an outfit that started out as off centaur that morphed, by dropping one member and adding a bunch of others, into firebird arts and music. i don't know if the're still there but they were one of the great things. ah and then there's kboo, portland's pacifica affiliate, and if you've ever heard of alternative media you know what that means.
so, as cities go, i'd have to give my vote to portland oregon. but i'd still rather be living in a tiney underground hut out in the boonies somewhere.
