Bus ‘candy’ has FWCS warning kids about drugs

Fort Wayne Community School officials are urging staff at each school to talk to students about the dangers of accepting unwrapped candy or anything else from anyone – including a friend.

The warning comes after a 10-year-old Forest Park Elementary student passed out Ecstasy pills to students on his school bus Monday morning, thinking it was candy.

“We’re advising kids to not ever take anything they don’t see come out of the original container and wrapper, even if it’s been given to them by a friend,” Chief Operations Officer Doug Coutts said.

The pills, which are hallucinogens, were about the size of an aspirin and had a check mark on them, similar to the Nike swoosh trademark. The boy told police he got a bag of 133 pills from the house where he goes to wait for the bus and did not know they were not candy.

Some of the students who received the pills put them in their mouths but spit them out because they tasted bad. Some complained of stomachaches and one felt tingling down the arms, police said.

Coutts said the students have since returned to school with no apparent long-lasting effects. He wouldn’t comment on any disciplinary action taken, but according to the district’s rights and responsibilities behavior code, possession, use or sale of drugs can result in assignment to an alternative program or expulsion.

There is no disciplinary action being considered for any staff members, Coutts said. He said staff acted appropriately in the situation. When the driver figured out what the pills were, police and school staff were notified, he said.

A letter to parents explaining the situation was sent home with students the next day.
The building was searched to make sure all the pills were recovered, Coutts said.

“We’re emphasizing to moms and dads that this is a national problem,” he said. “These drugs, they look like candy.”
Staff members already have talked to students at Forest Park, and Coutts said he expects other schools will have similar talks with their students soon.

I cannot believe that this actually happened. An ecstacy pill generally costs between $10 and $25, so at the very least the kid had $1330 of ecstacy that he did not pay for.

Actually I saw the news blip on that. It was done on purpose as the pills were modifed to look like candy(ie valintine messages and faces).

Most of the kids spit the pills out when they noticed it wasn't sugar.....

Yes it is true that ecstasy is rightfully classified as a euphroric stimulant empathogen, but it has been associated with psychedelics (and thus usually classified as one since the term "hallucinogen" seems to frighten the average american) since its creation.

All of this sounds to me like propaganda. Think about what allegedly happened: some guy makes alot of ecstacy pills (if this is true we cannot assume that the pills even contained MDMA), that were low doses (obviously low since they had virtually no apparent effect on the kids) and were shaped like candy. Then he gives what was potentially (and likely) over a $1000 of drugs to kid for free. What would the dealer gain from doing this? The only rational reason anyone would do this would be if they believe they could then form a customer base of addicted kids (which is likely the impression that people are supposed to be given), but obviously that is nonsense since ten year old kids (especially in what appears to be an urban setting) don't have the money to support an "ecstacy habit" and even for those who use ecstacy regularly it is unusual for anyone to use it more than once a week. And it cannot be claimed that dealer was also drugged out and crazy; it doesn't work that way.

I would have been happy for four straight months or a bit less, depending on how generous I am(which would probably take it to like 2 months)
