Nerdiest things - nominations

Perkeleenmaa

I'd like to start a poll, but I need ideas: What's the nerdiest thing there is?

I don't mean "intelligent". I mean nerdy and stupid. Incurably, inherently, completely. "If you do this, you are a nerd." The activity must have no connection to reality, or the "life" in "get a life".

By definition, anything that normally produces money is out. Computer techies are not necessarily nerdy, since they can actually earn a living from that, and if it's stupid and works, it's not stupid.

My humble ideas:

Seriously debating Star Trek vs. Star Wars
Learning a constructed language, such as Klingon
Caring for school grades for their own sake

This is as far as I got.

Why do you have such a problem with nerdy pastimes? Why is it wrong for someone to derive enjoyment from different things?

Anyway, here's my suggestions:
- Playing an online game like NationStates
- Posting on the forums of an online game
- Asking for people's suggestions in order to compile a list of nerdy activities

I'm sorry, but school grades are numbers teachers make up to describe your ability to follow their instructions, compared to other students. The natural questions are: first, is anyone going to read them, and second, is anyone going to care. With the exception of college admission, the answer is usually "no".

Why do you have such a problem with nerdy pastimes? Why is it wrong for someone to derive enjoyment from different things?
Because people, especially Americans (it's apparently a cultural thing), straightforwardly equate "nerdy hobby" with "intelligent hobby". That's why. There was an earlier thread on this about "why intelligent people are hated"; I'm trying to find out why nerdy people are hated because of their nerdiness, not because of their (supposed) intelligence.

Intelligence and nerdiness aren't the same, but have some connection, e.g. to learn a constructed language, you have to have language-related intelligence.

Also, activities that "aren't useful" often involve thinking and learning simply for pleasure, which is something that would not apply to anti-intellectual people.

Only to be topped by Paranoia, an rpg set in the world of tommorrow. Everything is controlled by The Computer ("The Computer is your friend"), and The Computer naturally doesn´t like disorder. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people with hidden mutant powers around - a.k.a. the players.
Your main goal - aside from whatever quest The Computer issues - is to reveal the mutant identity of your fellows, eliminating them immediately once that is accomplished.
Luckily, the cloning facilities provide unlimited supply of exactly the some persons over and over again. Of course, they come out of the factory officially mutation-free, but you know they ain´t like normal buddies.

Well, the main fun derides from the secret little messages you pass to the other players and the DM. 4 hours of this, and you start to learn the meaning of paranoia (and serious chest/ stomache pain, accompanied by temporal, near-fatal lack of of oxygen).

But remember: The Computer is your friend.

You neglected to add "stealing Yu-Gi-Oh cards and then telling a bunch of strangers on teh intarwebz."

Well, you added the part about confessing on the Internet. But I must say... stealing Yu-Gi-Oh cards? NERD! ;) (Unless, as someone mentioned, you were staging an intervention?)

(part above written by a good friend of mine)
I'd like to add LARPing in general, furries in particular because of the general creepiness of wanting to run around looking like a Disney face character gone horribly wrong.
SCA is pretty nerdy too, but in a more reasonable way. And look on the bright side: at least the Larpers get some fresh air.

Yes, actually. My wallet was becoming dangerously annorexic, and so I decided that she needed some sustenance in a truly desperate way. Those cards, and a few buyers, offered my little leather bound friend a feast fit for a king, and helped her remain on track with her weight for some time.

I don't think that's really nerdy. You're listing it as nerdy because it has something to do with computers. But even non-nerdy people can occasionally hyperconcentrate on something, like a movie-watching marathon.
