Just curious as to what everyone's opinions are on Japanese Animation, or anything else you might consider Anime. Personally I love the bizarre plots and the tragic fall of almost every hero/heroine. Every new anime seems to comes out with the intent to blow your mind more than any anime before it.

Anime I've Watched and Loved
Gungrave
Trigun
Cowboy Bebop
Berserker
Wolf's Rain
Full Metal Alchemist
Samurai Champloo
FLCL

Anime I've Watched and Vommited
Naruto
One Piece
Inuyasha
Witch Hunter Robin
Big O

If you have a favorite series post it and why you like it so much. Just got done watching Gungrave and I fell in love with it. Please no "Anime sucks" posts, if you have to at least elaborate otherwise I'll spam you with gun smilies.

You ever seen Angel Sanctuary? It's my favourite in the world. Ever. Fucking ever.

I approve of your positive list for the most part (I wouldn't exactly say I was wild about parts of FLCL, for instance), but I was wondering, in terms of your negatives list, whether you'd seen the Japanese or English versions. Maybe just because I've been there since it's humble beginnings before it was at all popular in the US (and therefore was introduced to it with nothing but shoddy English subtitles), but Big O holds a spot in my heart. If all you've seen is the English dub, I'd suggest trying the Japanese original with subtitles. If you've seen it with subtitles and still didn't like it.....eh, to each his own.

I'll have to check that out. As for Big O I just couldn't get into it, one episode was absolutely beautiful though. The one where the cop kept dreaming about the lady from the movie and it all came true. I just wanted to stand up and applaud after that. I know One Piece and Naurto were butchered by the American Censors but there's no excuse for Inuyash to be as horrible as it is.

Agreed on all points. And as for Inuyasha.....well, it only ever did me any good as a manga, when just about everything was left to imagination.....it's hard to get into it when you hate the English AND the Japanese voice talent. Mismatched voice talent is one thing I just can't ever get over.

Can't believe I forgot that and Ghost in the Shell (I like the series too). :p

One of the Macross' I saw wasn't half bad either and Neon Genosis is growing in my heart as well.

Naruto was better in Japanese... I know this because the American version makes me want to vomit. Never seen Big O in Japanese, but its probably good. My favorite anime that I've seen are... (Oh and Angel Sanctuary kicked ass, though it paled in comparison to the manga)

Akira The original badass anime.
Berserk Mwah hah hah! Now that was badass, even the dubbing was ok.
Cowboy Bebop Same as above.
Gundam Wing and 08th MS Team
Full Metal Alchemist Great in the original Japanese.
Elfen Lied One of the best anime ever mood-wise.
Naruto was ok before the american version, and the filler that they have in japan currently... Blargh...
Samurai X kicked ass.
Trigun Pretty obvious. >_>
X/1999 was an ok movie, but it couldn't fit as much into it as the series.

Berserker?
Do you mean Berzerk? with Gatts and the Band of the Hawk? If you do
WARNING: the series didn't end there. they had to stop it because it caught up with the Manga and thus they didn't know how to continue it. the Manga goes on much further and the fate of Caska is revealed.

The original Macross (japanese I mean) is soo much better than that they brought over to the US. (Robotech)

oh, and add Sailor Moon S to the list.

Full Metal Alchemist and Cowboy Bebop are a definite "Hell yeah!". Neon Genesis Evangelion was very interesting near the later stages, though whether or not it was enjoyable is another matter; engaging would probably be a better word. The Tenchi series was... a little irritating, after a while. Ditto with Love Hina. That's all I can think of offhand that hasn't already been mentioned.

Oh, and Rurouni Kenshin was quite cool too.

Though, it is passable entertainment if the rest of the worthwhile stories are out of stock at the video store.....

I'd have to agree with your list. Naruto is overrated, especially the anime.

I love the Japanese Bleach anime. The actors are all awesome, and funny to boot! The story is awesome as well! The thing I like the best about it, is that all the captians arent just "bosses" for Ichigo to beat. They all have some story and drive for what they do, etc. etc.

FMA is good too. Its even deeper than Bleach, plus it has an awesome score. Its funny since the anime and manga are mixed up. I like it too.

FLCL is just crazy. I like the manga better, even though its more confusing. If I made an anime, FLCL is about as close of a comparison as I can think of.

Kenshin (sp) was a good anime too.

NG:E is weird. Very, very good, but weird.

Robotech is awesome! Yay for old anime!

Soo much more! I CANT POST IT ALL! YAAHH! Still, there is a TON of crappy stuff out there. Bleck. I hate crappy anime/manga.

Hellsing is badass. Naruto sucks. None of the Gundams ever caught my attention except for G-Gundam, and only because of the concept of people controlling giant robots the way they do.

Cowboy Bebop is an artform. End of story. The anime itself will incarnate just to be able to ascend to heaven.

Inuyasha is annoying at some points, and really good in some other points. Mostly annoying, though.

I like Megatokyo (online comic/manga) even though it kind of resembles another crappy many-girls-one-guy-too-much-complication anime who's name shall not be spoken under my account. =P

Ghost in the shell was... meh. The series bored me, and the movie was odd and slightly entertaining. I liked Armitage better.

Big-O is... well, it's essentially Batman with huge robots. You'd think that would be a whoopass mixture, but meh. It's not horrible - if I'm bored and there's nothing else on TV, I'd have watched it without being violently sick.

Full Metal Alchemist is decent stuff. Very solid anime, overall. Nicely done dubbing, awesome storyline, cool atmosphere. There's just... I dunno. It seems like Edward, as kickass as he was, didn't have much depth to his character. He's like a Vash Jr. He tries, and pulls it off somewhat, but doesn't come anywhere near the sheer power (physically, mentally, emotionally, everything) of Vash himself.

Finally, hanging and flying in all its glory, high above even Cowboy Bebop's possibilities, soars the mighty Trigun, ruling over all other anime in its throne of awesomeness. Vash is the king, without a doubt, with his faithful cleric Wolfwood standing by his side.

There is absolutely nothing... -nothing-... that -anybody- could ever say to dethrone Vash in my mind. Not anything. I <3 him with a passion. Other ranks change every so often - sometimes I like Hellsing slightly more than I like Cowboy Bebop (but only if I hadn't seen CBBB for a while) and it'll move up in rank until I see another really badass episode of CBBB, and stuff like that will happen to almost every anime I've ever watched, but no matter what, Trigun and Vash are always at the top. Always.

w00t Obsession.

Meh, the ending was terrible imo, you think Vash would have learned a lesson from Legato and Wolfwood...someone has to die. Like the spider and the butterfly analogy, Vash never had a solution he would have cried with no answer. Just like the friggin ending, he may have beaten the spider, but it will come back for the butterfly eventually. *cough* Knives *cough*!

Inuyasha was good until about the 7th time Naraku escaped, but just before Koga got his 4th episode, and around the time Inuyasha said Windscar for the 1,000th time. Horribly repetitive, right now the series is just milking its fanbase. I think Kagome needs to follow in the footsteps of Julia...

Favorites of all Time
Gundam (top all-time fave)
-First Gundam
-08th MS Team
-Z Gundam (only thru ep 10 but kicks major @ss)
-Gundam SEED/Astray (Red and Blue Frame shorts)
NGE
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Spirited Away
Ruroni Kenshin

Naruto is good, but I'm not obsessed. Same w/FMA. Haven't seen enough of it to make it my fave. And I guess I owe some thanks to Gundam Wing for sparking my Gundam interest.

I've never seen a Gundam series that I hated, except for G Gundam (obvious reasons).

My favorites:
Gravitation-I know why most of you don't have this one XD
Sukisho- same as above
Trigun- Vash is teh hawt! And the story is good. ^^;
Hellsing-good action, good story, but "police girl" kinda bugs me
Sailor Moon SS- the final season and it has the best story line out of them all
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi- I'm surprised no one has put this one down
Saiyuki- good series. I'm surprised no one has it down. ^^
FMA- it's pretty good, but I haven't finished it yet
Angel Sanctuary- I liked the manga better tho.
FLCL- To me Takkun looks like Shinji. Is it just me or does anyone else think so? It seems like Gainax makes their leads look the same.

Ones I like
Naruto-I would like it more if there weren't so many fillers. It's like 3 episodes of story and then 20 of fillers. Ugh.
Blue Seed- S'ok. Didn't like the ending too much.
Escaflowne- Their noses bug me so much! They're so... so.... pointy and big.
X and X/1999- They were ok. A little odd, but what do you expect from Clamp?
NGE and the movies- wow... not only is the series odd, but the movies are... interesting.

Anyway I think that's it. There's probably more, but I think the list is long enough. I want to at least pretend that I have a life. XD

Somehow, though I really like mangas and anime movies, I deem most anime series as crap - crap style, crap production, crap stories - with the exception of Neon Genesis Evangelion, but mayhaps only because the manga fuckin' rocks. ;)

Anime movies I trully enjoyed were

Akira
Ghost in the Shell (aklright, the series wasn´t too bad either)
Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind
Laputa Castle in the Sky
Howl´s Moving Castle (they changed the name in the German version from a Japanese pronounced Howl to Haoru, the morons >.>)
Appleseed
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away).

And Grave of the Fireflys was the first animated movie ever to bring up tears. Brilliant movie.

What is the anime-ophile obsession with Trigun? I watched the show; the show had its moments, but was mostly immature and lacked any real action. The action it had was akin to Lupin III in that Vash went around shooting at stuff saying stupid shit. If you cut out every part with Vash doing classic Japanese cartoon moves, the show would be ok, but with them there, it just fucks up the whole thing and cancels out what good it has.

PS. I know it isn't anime. But bring back Samurai Jack damnit.

It was the premise:
A peacenik, revolver toting guy with loads of hype around his name. Then the priest came along.... and woah! The cross is full of guns...:D

Combined with the immaturity, light humor, and heavy moments that made the show easy and fun to watch.

I second any amount of disgust anyone can muster at any kind of animated Dragon Ball.

I'm sorry but Naruto just failed to move forward. I watched episodes 1-122 before I stopped. The beginning is ok and it gets really good towards the end and the fight with the original hokage, but after that the plot just halts. They spend like 1204124014712047812894712894 episodes chasing those four men through the forest. I just stopped watching, it became so boring.

And yes, that was with Jap. voice and subtitles.

My favorites from what i've seen:

Samari champloo (or however you spell it, I haven't watched it enough, but I love it)
Sailor Moon (gotta stick to the classics)

Cowboy Bebop
Hellsing
Angel Sanc.

I would enjoy One Piece more if I could see the japanese version.

I despise:

Vampire Princess Miyu (You may have won as a vampire, but you lost as a woman)
Project A-ko (Can you say vaginal walls capable of crushing steel?)
The Irresponcible Captain Tylor (Breasts and bottoms are nice and shiny too!)
Akira (What the hell just happened? No, seriously, what happened?)
Ghost in the Shell (The Net is vast and infinant)
Neon Genesis Evangelion ("I mustn't run away, I mustn't run away." "Shinji, I'm bored" "I must run away, I must run away!)
And too many more to name.

Bad anime... Hmmm
Vampire Wars ("Just call me... BAT!" Oh God, here come the Batman puns)
Ninja Scroll (Ok, so it's ninja with sex and demons? HUH?)
Gogolo 18 Honey (So... he just met her, and they're having sex while she briefs him... ok, makes sense)

If you have a favorite series post it and why you like it so much. Just got done watching Gungrave and I fell in love with it. Please no "Anime sucks" posts, if you have to at least elaborate otherwise I'll spam you with gun smilies.

Urotokodoji - Legend of the Demon Womb Overfiend

or something like that. It rules.

Demons. Cat-creatures. Eroticism. Scantily-clad anime chicks. Nazis. Hitler. The end of the world.

It's just that kind of film.

I dislike most Anime, specially anime featuring school girls and tentacles, giant robots, martial artists with super powers, training creatures to fight each other, or guys that turn into girls. That pretty much disqualifies a good 80%. The other 20% I may be able to deal with, but am not willing to take the risk of trying it out only to run into a tentacle halfway through.

I have to say that I can't believe none of you have mentioned my favourite anime and manga, Hajime No Ippo. It is brilliant and not at all like the usual anime sterotypes. Its about a kid (ippo) who finds that he is good at boxing and goes on to become a pro boxer. Some great action sequences, good dialogueand witty as hell. Has anyone else seen it or am I wandering in an ippo wilderness? :)

Sreiously if anyone wants it you can dl it legally from boxtorrents.com.

Cheers

It was the premise:
A peacenik, revolver toting guy with loads of hype around his name. Then the priest came along.... and woah! The cross is full of guns...:D

Combined with the immaturity, light humor, and heavy moments that made the show easy and fun to watch.
add to that the fact that this "human typhoon" didn't kill anyone (that I can recall) went out of his way to save lives and yet, his name causes fear.

oh, add to my list, Irresponsible Captain Tylor.
Azumanga Diaoh

Most that I have seen (quite a bit) belongs to... err, a certain subcategory.

Apart from that, however, I have so far seen The Twelve Kingdoms, an awesome fantasy (and supposedly drama, altought that's not the main focus) series (45 episodes. the immense scope of it all keeps widening all the way, far beyond the story in itself. that fantasy world is huge, complex, and damn intresting. too bad the original books aren't avaliable in English. altought there is an incomplete fan-translation in progress).

And I'm currently going through Lain. (have 2 episodes left to watch) It seems like there will be quite a bit listed in this thread to "get" (:p) as soon as I get home.

Inuyasha Good characters, voice-acting, and pretty funny.
FullMetal Alchemist I like the plot and the hilarious characters.
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex Gotta love futuristic crime-fighting and that cyber stuff.
Ceres: Celestial Legend Such a very excellent series. Very emotional and beautiful. But I reccommend the manga than the DVDs.

I haven't seen much anime myself, but I caught the Cowboy Bebop movie on late one night and all I can say is DAMN! (in a good way). It's well written. I missed the ending, but it had me hooked.

Oh, I've also seen about half of Akira, which was also well done.

Now I just have to track them down... It'd be so much easier if I had a credit card...

Oh, that's just stereotypes, like that all opera consists of fat ladies dressed as valkyries shattering glasses with their singing.

They gave us the goodness of Transformers, Lupin, and Studio Ghibli's extensive library. Therefore, anime is allowed to continue as far as I'm concerned, despite the shit-awful stuff that makes it onto North American TV.

I think I hate 90% of the fans though.

The series was way better than the movie btw. ^_^

Just saw blue gender and that's a series I can't really decide whether I like or hate. The main character is...psychotic at best description. Then again all great anime characters are.

Hmm, let’s see.

My favorite anime is probably Full Metal Alchemist, simply because I really enjoyed characters, the plot and the setting. The series just rubbed me the right way, I suppose.

After that it’s a tie between Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Samurai Champloo and Neon Genesis Evangelion for their great animation and action sequences.

The OVA of Read or Die gets a special mention, I suppose, if only for its humorous caricature of the shrub.

Anime I can not stand includes Inuyasha, and Dragon Ball, for their repetitive and slow story lines but also for their, at times, piss poor animations and action sequences.

My favorite anime of all time is Outlaw Star. I can't wait for the new box set to come out.

Trigun was really good but Vash just pissed me off a bit because of his don't kill crap. It was always annoying since he was pretty much like that in every episode.

Cowboy Bebop is really awesome. Thats my 2nd favorite.

Here is Greenwood was a decent short anime.

Full metal Alchemist had great plot and really great characters.

I want to watch Bleach, Beserk, and any other good animes I heard good things about. Does anybody have some suggestions for me?

Particular Favorites;
Anything by Studio Ghibli, but most especially Tonari no Totoro (aside from the video, I have two totoro neckties, three stuffed toy totoros, a totoro alarm clock, a totoro key chain, and two different totopro calendars. The ending theme is one of the few songs I'll venture to sing at karaoke in Japanese)

Akira
Dirty Pair
Project A-Ko
Ranma
Doraemon
Sazaesan
And Osamu Tezuka's work, especially Jungle Taitei and Tetsuwan ATOM, (as well as his "Buddha" comic")

Howl´s Moving Castle (they changed the name in the German version from a Japanese pronounced Howl to Haoru, the morons >.>)

You do realise that "Howl" is the British title and that the movie comes from a Diana Wynne Jones novel, but Hauru no Ugoku Shiro (ハウルの動く城). Haoru is close enough to Hauru for me.

I have yet to figure out the Japanese obession with large, powerfully destructive, cats.

Just don't bring up yakineko....

Oops I was tired when I posted that. I forgot to add Samurai Champloo that was a really kick ass anime. I hope they make some kind of movie for it like they did with Cowboy Bebop.
