IPods

I am thinking about asking for an IPod for my birthday, and I got a few questions about them. One of the questions is that can any of them download a 4 hour raido show? The main reason I want one is that I live on the east coast and Coast to Coast AM doesn't come on till 1am. By that time I'm in bed. I listen in on Friday nights, but even I'm starting to fall asleep before the show is over on Fridays. Also, are there any alternatives to the ear plugs? I have a hearing aid (BAHA) and I can't wear ear plugs or head sets.
Thanks for all of your help.

There are all sorts of docks and such that use speakers rather than headphones. Also, there is an adapter available that will broadcast whatever you select from your iPod to your car stereo or a portable radio.

Whether or not they can download the complete radio show depends on the memory size of whichever iPod you get, and the compression of the file. And there are alternatives to the headphones, especially for the home environment. My favourite by far is this little baby (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7124649&type=product&id=1109937802166), which is affordable but still great quality for a speaker dock.
However, by and large, I'd say either you need to make sure to get the replacement/repair plan for the iPod you buy (Best Buy has the best plan in the industry, after the Apple plan), or you could go for a similar mp3 player, like the Zen Micro (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7294064&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat10200050002&id=1118841173673), which is a great deal and much better value for parts and plans, IMO.

The Zen is definitely a sexy little piece of technology.

My way of recording audio is to connect the source to the line-in on my computer and then use HardDiskOgg to record the show to my hd. You'll also need to download lame.dll to be able to save the files as mp3. AND you'll have to muck about with sound levels before you record. But it's all free! :D

I got myself a Zen when Apple told me that they wouldn't fix my iPod because it didn't fall into the restrictions of the replacement/repair plan (in other words, they screwed me within four months of purchase), and I love it more than life itself. I'm upgrading to the 8GB (linked in previous post) in a month or two....whenever I have that much money to blow on a whim.

Hmm, I wonder if 8GB is enough to hold a 4 hour show.

Are you kidding? The only reason I don't go for the iRiver 20GB player/image viewer is because 10,000 songs seems excessive. 8GB will store around 4000 songs, so it'll fit a 4 hour program with PLENTY of space.

Now I just need to find a speaker adapter for the Zen and I'll be set. But right now, I need to go flying!

Any large iPod can hold a Podcast like coast to coast as long as it is in a readbale format (basically, any common sound format outside of Og Vorbis).
The headphone jack on an iPod is a standard non-proprietary 1/8th jack, anything you could plug a diskman into you can plug an iPod into. I use a tape adapter in my car, cost me 15 bucks and I can make my iPod play through any stereo with a tape deck. Apple (and other companies) also make docks for the iPod with built in speakers and the like, but these can be kinda pricey.

I got the 20gb Zen Touch by Creative Labs, and it's waaayyy better than stupid iPod. People buy iPod's because they're status symbols, not because they've put any thought into it.

Sure, people only use iPod because they are status symbols:rolleyes:. It has nothing to do with the fact that iTunes has features that are missing from its major competator (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1917878,00.asp), or the fact that the interface is noobtastic. People just buy it because their friends have them.

Yes, because I like the thought of only being able to use iTunes, and buying songs specifically for one product, with no ability to burn them onto CDs or anything. I also love the idea of not being able to get songs from anywhere else to put on my mp3 player. :headbang:
