greatest recent thingy!

So, my husband bought me a 128MB flash drive a few months ago, and I was like "cool." but, then last night I realized (finally) the power of the flash drive. I saved all my tax stuff to it, so this tax season when I am going from house to house doing taxes I only have to carry my little bitty flash drive (instead of my "backpack of tax crap" which weighed about 40lbs) I am officially calling my flash drive the greatest new thingy!
so, what recent invention/innovation has changed your life for the better?

Power Tab. I would've said Pancakes, but those aren't exactly recent.
Stuffed Crust pizza. Thank you Pizza Hut! :)

I was worried about the "recent", but now that sliced bread was mentioned...eh. So I'd have to say getting DSL a year and a half ago. I can remember the suckage of the dial-up just well enough to still rejoice over DSL.
Oh, and as for really recent: that the Berlin Film Festival finally put a detailed program online. For the first time in years, I didn't have to hunt around the city to find one.

"greatest recent thingy!"
I suppose that would depend upon how you define "recent." The most recent electronic device I've acquired was over a year ago when I signed up for Vonage digital voice and used a router for the first time. I'm not really into owning the latest electronic fad. I prefer to wait and see how the technology shakes out.

The best thing is my computer is right next to the tv, and with a wireless controller I can sit right back, chat to friends and pwn on n00bz all at the same time :D And, better still, what with the wonders of the computer age, listen to music too! Wicked awesome huh?
*I'm not too sad. Honest. I'm just a bit geeky.*
Depends what you mean by recent. I'm gonna go with Video Games if that counts.
Ah, video games.

2 GB?! My computer only has a 4GB hard drive, although my hubby's laptop has like 80GB or something insane like that.
*gets a new one soon and this one goes to the kiddo's* :D
EDIT: I just remembered that my husband had upgraded my computer last summer so it's got like 60GB or something now.........sorry. I sounded more pathetic than I was. :( it's still not got the RAM I want though, hubby's laptop has 512mb I think I only have like 256mb or something :(

It's also amazing that they got 4x cheaper in 2 years. I bought a 256 in 2003 for $70 and now you can buy a 1GB for less than that. I have a 1GB now also. They also have multi-GB ones, but they are bigger. I imagine my children plugging in a 250GB thingy as small as my 1GB is now.

My idea of greatest recent "thingie" is this beauty (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=RIWAJM1IY5V5TKC4D3DFAFY?skuId=7294064&type=product&productCategoryId=pcmcat10200050002&id=1118841173673), who I'm happy to report will be mine in less than a month. Unless I, in a moment of weakness, accidentally spend the money on a new pair of Michael Kors boots instead.....

My gaming rig has a 160 gigabyte 7200rpm hard drive, and it's down to about 10 gigabytes. Believe me, if you get a big hard drive, you'll find ways to use all of that space.

I had a GameCube with exactly thirty games. I may be poor, but I'm ghetto rich.

size is less important than speed for that reason. 10 000rpm. i've used one, and the difference was wierd

I take it you don't play games then? Or only ones that state "Exits are NORTH, EAST, SOUTHWEST".

all the games I play are on the internet. I use my computer for business, and my daughter's homeschool stuff, and she does most of her stuff online too.

I found a lot of Java games for the kids to help them with thier homeschool work.
I play a lot of PS2 and my old ATARI but they don't use my computer. ;)

Most of my games are console based, but a few, like first-person-shooters, RPGs, and strategy are more suited to PC (mostly because keyboard + mouse are best for those kinds of game).

oh, I can't do first person shooter games, they make me dizzy, my husband has Star Trek Elite Force for both his PC and our PS2, I can't even stand to watch him play, I would be dizzy forever. :p
My Sidekick (II) is my best friend. It's my alarm clock, medicine reminder, phone, e-mail fetcher, IM device, text messager, camera, calendar, task list, scratch pad, game console, and all-purpose portable web-sufing device that allows me to play NS anytime, anywhere.

Watching is far more likely to make you dizzy than actually playing. Elite force was a bit easy in my opinion. Fun for a bit, but seemed like it was just cashing in on the license.

yeah. It didn't take him long to beat it, I think he just plays it so he can zone out for a while (he works full time and goes to uni full time, so when he gets free time he needs to NOT have to think ;)) He wants to play the mode where he gets to shoot me, but I get lost and can't find him and I can't read the map thingy, so we end up playing MK3 or Rampage

I take it "the mode where he gets to shoot me" means multiplayer?
Anyway, a good game for non-thinking is Serious Sam. I've only played the second encounter because the first one just brings up some meaningless error when I try to run it. But the one I could play is awesomely awesome.

Good point. The player vs. player mode is often called "deathmatch" in FPS's, as opposed to cooperative mode.

meh. I am only really going to use it for about 4 months out of the year, I have it loaded up with about 1500 pages of forms and instructions, and stuff to take with me, it's a pain to actually carry all that around, so now I have electronic copies :D

The really great thing about it is that he ignored my history of involuntarily breaking all portable music-playing devices.

I believe that the invention of computer based digital video editing has changed my life. I can now do my work on a laptop instead of sweating away in studio, changing tapes in bulky betacam machines, having to level all the analog signals. Nowadays its just load in, edit, print to tape... and it's a rap!

1 gig mp3 player, bah! Buy a 1GB Smartmedia card.
That can also double as a flash drive as they are cheaper than thumb drives and alot of the computers coming out have media card readers built into them.

I bought a 128Mb USB drive about 2yrs ago, and it was great. But these days I use SD cards that range from 256Mb to 1Gb and move around between my camera, Palm (that also plays music), and computers.
However, the best new thing for me has been Firefox 1.5 with the WebDesigner and CSSEditor extensions. Awesome!

Hmm, I'm not sure...again, depends on the definition of recent. Possibly my 20gb Creative Zen Touch - I love that thing. Also the laptop I got in September; since I live with my boyfriend for part of the week and my mother for the rest, it's great that the important computer related stuff is mobile like that (want to upgrade the ((40gb)) HDD and ((256mb)) memory, though). Oh and the wireless network and assorted receivers we have at my boyfriend's house; now that I can access the internet while curled up on the sofa, I don't know how I lived without it! :p
