you're the one who has trouble with basic physics, right?

It's not hot. It's just excited. It can't wait for the next season of American Idol. :p

You're kidding, right?
well, i did accidentally say that it was made of air when, in fact, it isnt

The atmosphere is hot, because you have the weirdest fetish I've ever heard of. A strange sexual stimulation to air. I'd hate to see the children. Ugly, ugly mutant babies. Make sure you use a condom. Or if you don't want to you should atleast ask yourself "Do I really want to marry a gigantic cloud of Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Xenon, and other Noble Gases and airy compounds that surrounds the Earth?" What if you break-up? Instant death, that's what. Not just for you either, the entire Earth. The atmosphere would probably move in with Venus' atmosphere cause it's really fucking hot.

Er, since "air" isn't exactly something you'd find in the periodic table, I think you'd be fine with saying the atmosphere is "just air" for the matters of this thread.
What I meant is are you serious about your question as a whole?
I mean, I don't expect anyone to know the specific mechanisms and reactions involved in climate generation or the greenhouse effect or anything (hell, I know I forgot most of what I ever learned about it) but I had kind of hoped a certain degree of very basic understanding could be assumed.
Also, call me old-fashioned, but I'd rather go and look the basics up somewhere before busting out a thread to the world.
Oh, if you (hopefully) were kidding: good for you & never mind me then.

maybe he's referring to the fact that when a space capsule (space shuttle, for instance) comes back to earth, it needs a strong heat shield just to keep from burning up completely.

Maybe he is. Not that that would make anything better. :p

No, I think it's another physics homework question, so I gave him a link to the answer of why the atmosphere heats up.
