BEIJING (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc. provided evidence to Chinese authorities that led to the imprisonment of an Internet writer, lawyers and activists said on Thursday, the second such case involving the U.S. Internet giant.

The latest storm over Western Internet companies in China comes just weeks after Web search giant Google Inc. came under fire for saying it would block politically sensitive terms on its new China site, bowing to conditions set by Beijing.

Writer and veteran activist Liu Xiaobo said Yahoo had co-operated with Chinese police in a case that led to the 2003 arrest of Li Zhi, who was charged with subverting state power and sentenced to eight years in prison after trying to join the dissident China Democracy Party.

Yahoo gave public security agents details of Li's registration as a Yahoo user, Liu said in an article posted on U.S.-based Chinese-language news portal Boxun, citing a defense statement from Li's lawyers.

Stop using yahoo. There is other email and other instant messaging out there.

I don't pay for thier services, they aren't making money off me, really what is this boycott supposed to accomplish?

They make money from advertisers.

If their advertisers think that people are deserting Yahoo, they're screwed.

And also paid according to the number of "searches" done via yahoo.com

(Indirectly, evidently. The more searches, the more advertisers.)

Well, I'm definately going to use alternatives as much as possible, but yahoo and gmail are my favorite mail servers, and Google's not looking to good in that article either. Not as bad as Yahoo, but still helping with government repression.

Just for the record (if you don't know the case)
Chinese Journalist Shi Tao was arrested and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment (re-education through hard labour I think it was - lovely euphemism) for "divulging state secrets abroad" thanks to Yahoo!'s help. Shi used a Yahoo China account to e-mail his notes on an internal government circular detailing measures to control the press to a dissident website. Yahoo! complied with Chinese authorities' requests for information, which helped trace those emails back to Shi.
Said circular had been sent by the Chinese communist party to all journalists and reporters in China on the eve of the 15th anniversary of the Tianamen Square massacre telling them they were not to make any mention of it.

Good one, Yahoo! Helping promote freedom and democracy everywhere. Unless there's a buck to be made of course.

I assume this means that if someone hacked a Yahoo! email account in Saudi Arabia, Yahoo! would only be too happy to give details so the offender can have their hand chopped off.
Hell, if it meant a few more million, they'd prob offer to do it themselves.

Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft all do this sort of censorship thing. Sort of limits your search engine options, I reckon.

Breaks the law?
The 'law' he broke was forwarding an email! An email telling him what and how to report.

And you don't care.

See, this is why they can get away doing things like this.

People get all mad when "America tries to police the world" then I decide that I don't care what goes on in another country, and now I am the bad guy? which is it?

I am so confused.........

So you support the right of any government to enforce laws, no matter how dranconian or evil, simply because it's the 'law'?
How noble of you.

I thought it wasn't supposed to be any of my business what goes on in other countries........I seem to remember a "Leave the Iraqi people alone, they don't want democracy, you are ruining thier nation, they liked being killed and tortured by Sadam.." so I don't care anymore. If this would have happened in America, I would be mad, I would boycott, I would write letters, I would be on the evening news, but in China? I don't see why I should really care.

Two wrongs don't make a right, sweet lady. If Yahoo weren't my webhosting provider, I would drop them. It's one thing to try and comply with the laws of the country you're dealing with, quite another to provide them with information to arrest people for doing the very things we claim to hold so dear in our own Country. :(

If you aren't going to follow the laws of a country then you shouldn't do business in that country.

It doesn't matter "how we do things in America" when you are in another country, you either follow thier rules, or leave.

Well, I can't say I've ever used Yahoo... but I wouldn't stop over something as trivial as this.
It's just the way the laws work in China. It's up to the people there to determine if they want change.
Mind you, I felt the same way about Iraq, but 'America' didn't agree with the non-involvement philosophy.
I don't get why America has to forcibly "democrasize" the world, when they themselves fought for it on their own, creating their own 'ideal' government.
I say let other nations evolve at their own pace, as well...
Waiiiiit a second. Religious Right guy in power. Term "evolution" is a no-no.
It's so much clearer now..
