Does anybody else think that schools are going a wee bit overboard with the zero tolerance policies? :p

Yeah, that is sad.

You don't suspend a 6-year-old over something like that.
You just explain (in terms a child can understand) why we don't do that, and tell him not to do it again. I'd be fuming if that were my child that was suspended:headbang:

Well, they didn't brand him and shove him in stocks to be pelted with rotten vegetables so they haven't gone totally overboard. yet.

Exactly, you don't do something to a child like that when they don't understand something like that at that point in time.

even of a touchy-feelie kid had to be disciplined to keep his hands to himself, you don't call it 'Sexual harassment', for Christ's sake!

WTF?!

What is wrong with people these days?

And letting a 6-year-old stay home from school for three days as "punishment"... yeah, that's gonna work.

Totally overboard would have been more entertaining. Revolting, but entertaining. :)

The thing is that it suggests the girl felt victimized and I simply cannot believe that. If my imaginary daughter came home telling me that some boy kissed her on the cheek and asked me why he did it. I would tell her boys are just weird and to tell him to cut it out and if he didn't tell the teacher. I wouldn't tell her, oh, dear God, you poor creature, you've been victimized. Creating a society filled with overreactions does not benefit anyone.

I suspect that in most cases 'zero tolerance' is just a disingenius euthenism for cowardly lazyness.

Ack. Something like this crops up every once in a while. I actually remember this from 1996: Earlier that year, a Lexington, North Carolina, 6-year-old was separated from his class after kissing a classmate on the cheek.

Insanely stupid & one of the instances where "only in America" is really fitting.

it would still be mad hard getting into college with that record, though

Criminal records are sealed. They aren't actually wiped. And school records do not fall under that rule. They are open to college admissions boards. I was suspended for hitting a kid with a rock at about that age and they knew all about it at my college.

You know guys, when I read these american news, I don't know whether to laugh or to boggle. Their next action will probably be launching the nuclear missiles at one of Arab countries where girls get married at the age of 13. Why, it's sex with minors. Against human rights, so on.

Pretty much. It's their way of saying, "We don't want to actually examine any cases! Heavens no! That would be difficult! If it means that an Eagle Scout gets suspended for not cleaning out his car after a camping trip, so be it! If it means that a girl gets sent home for bringing a butter knife in her lunchbox, ok! If it means that a kindergartner who kisses a classmate on the cheek, no matter how cute, gets suspended, aweseome! Just so long as we don't have to think real hard."

What ever happened to just making the kid skip recess or detention for tounching class mates in a 'bad way.'

Fucking teachers: I wouldn't mind, but the 'teacher school' they go to seems to make them dumber at their child minding job than regular uneducated nannies from the dominican republic.

Too much time spent on ivy league, ivory tower, pedagogy and not enough on actually learning something I suspect.

Oh no! Perv-alert! Perv-alert!!!

Oh shit!!!!! I just remembered something! Just yesterday - my daughter gave her brother a big hug and kiss.

Oh sure...it LOOKED all innocent and friendly..... but how can I be sure that she isn't a perv too!

I know she's only two - but that does it!

Soon as I get home that little tramp is getting sat her down for a looooooong chat about the evils of incest!

We'll do that right after her potty training session.

After all, if you don't nip these things in the bud - who knows WHERE they'll lead?

Dumb-assed fucking school board......... but hey, who would really expect schools to know anything about..... children.

This is just ridiculous, the idea that kids this young know what sexual harrassment is. Perhaps school officials don't know what it is? Kids just like annoying each other, poking and the like. I suppose know this girl is scarred for years to come?

"Honey, we've been dating for 19 years and we're in our 40's. When are we going to have sex?"
"You're so insensitive. I told you that a 6-year-old poked me in the side with his finger when I was an adolescent. Everytime you hold me I just keep picturing... that finger. Touching my waist. It was so... so... dirty. I showered and showered, but I couldn't wash off his fingerprint. Look. You can still see it there now. *screams* The horror of that finger on my waist."

No shit!

"The Brockton School Committee defines sexual harassment among students, in part, as 'uninvited physical contact such as touching, hugging, patting or pinching.'"

OMG! I would STILL be in jail! My grandmother was a very loving woman and taught me that when you like someone, you hug them.

And people wonder why so many American public schools aren't teaching the basics! Hell, they don't have time! They're too frakkin' busy enforcing political correctness!

Personally, I would raise so much hell about this and sue so many people that hell wouldn't have ANY of us!
