ADL Statement on Danish Cartoons Depicting Mohammed

New York, NY, February 2, 2006 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) issued the following statement in response to the controversy stemming from the twelve cartoons depicting Mohammed featured in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten and reprinted in other European newspapers:

ADL is opposed to religious, racial and ethnic stereotyping in the media. We found some of the cartoons in Jyllands-Posten troubling, particularly the direct linkage of Mohammad and violence.

At the same time, we are gravely concerned by the extreme violent reaction these cartoons have generated in Muslim communities in Europe, and particularly in the Middle East. It is certainly the right of individuals and governments to express their disagreement with these depictions. However, the use of violence, threats, boycotts and other extreme reactions are highly inappropriate and bode ill for future debates involving Islam, democracy and free speech.

What has been overlooked in the controversy is the fact that despicable anti-Jewish caricatures appear daily in newspapers across the Arab and Muslim world. While invoking the supposed "freedom of the press" in their countries, Arab and Muslim leaders have refused to take any action to stem the drumbeat of anti-Semitism in widely circulated newspapers, many state-sponsored. Indeed, leaders of regimes such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia have virtually ignored appeals from the United States and Jewish organizations to put an end to incitement in their media, excusing it in the name of "freedom of the press." One would hope that leaders of Arab and Muslim countries would turn all of the anger being aimed at the European press into a larger lesson for their own people about the power of images.

ADL is strongly committed to free speech and freedom of the press – principles we consider the cornerstones of democracy. In a democratic society, newspapers need to be free to publish controversial content without fear of censorship or intimidation of their writers and editors. At the same time, newspapers and all media outlets should to take into account the sensitivities of racial, ethnic and religious groups.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

These cartoons are some of the sickest examples. The ADL has thousands of examples on their site. They keep a good record of it. Too bad the rest of the media won't show these to completely discredit the Muslims.

Their articles they write are just as bad. They treat the bullshit forgery "Protocols of Elder Zion" as a real publication. They justify their positions based on the fact they believe it is a true plan for Jewish control of the world. Every true historian has claimed the Protocols is pure bullshit written by Czarist Russia to justify and incite pogroms.

Stop reprinting Muhammad cartoons, UN chief pleads (http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/national/2006/02/09/cartoons-annan060209.html)

CBC News

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan wishes editors wouldn't get so worked up about freedom of expression that they feel justified reprinting the Muhammad cartoons that have enraged some Muslims in recent days.

"Let me say that, honestly, I do not understand why any newspaper will publish the cartoons today," Annan told reporters in New York City on Thursday.

"It is insensitive. It is offensive. It is provocative, and they should see what has happened around the world.

"This does not mean that I am against freedom of speech, or freedom of the press. Yes, I am for that.

"But as I have indicated in the past, freedom of speech is not a licence. It does entail exercising responsibility and judgment, and quite honestly I cannot understand why any editor will publish cartoons at this time, which inflames and pours oil on the fire."

The 12 cartoons, published in a Denmark newspaper in September, have been reprinted in more than 20 countries since a series of sometimes violent protests erupted in Muslim countries in the past two weeks. In Canada, they have appeared in Montreal's Le Devoir and The Cadre, the student paper at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Many Muslims consider any depiction of Muhammad to be blasphemous and reject ideas of fair comment where he is concerned. In one of the cartoons, Muhammad is shown wearing a turban in the shape of a bomb with a burning fuse. In another, he is seen telling suicide bombers arriving in heaven that there are no virgins left.

In the past week, at least 11 Afghans died in protests – some of them shot by police as a mob stormed a camp where Norwegian and Finnish troops are based. Demonstrators also set fire to the Danish Embassy in Beirut and the embassies of Denmark and Norway in Damascus.

U.S. officials, among others, have suggested the protests are being stage managed by radical groups and anti-Western governments such as Syria's, which is not known for tolerating spontaneous demonstrations.

Annan declined to be drawn into that argument.

"As to the question of whether some governments are manipulating this, it's difficult for me to say," he said. "I have no evidence to that effect.

"This is so widespread, and it is unfortunate that we all need to take steps to calm the situation. And whatever the anger of those concerned, violence is not the answer.

"They should not attack innocent civilians. They should not attack people who are not responsible for the publication of the cartoons. Whether it is a general condemnation of Denmark, or Europeans, it is wrong. They should really avoid doing that and violence must be condemned as unacceptable."

Annan was similarly agnostic on questions of free expression.

"I often say it is a bit like religion. If there is a problem, it is not with the faith, but the faithful. It is not the text, it is the way we interpret it."

Join Hillel when you go to college. Then you will be surrounded by Jews. Purdue is pretty right wing for a university. Most of the students here voted for Bush. I haven't seen any large anti-war rallies since I've gone to Purdue. I'm in NROTC and Jewish so I would normally be a magnet for liberal hate, but I don't see it here much. Besides, people are pissed off at the Arabs for the crap they've done the past few weeks. It's hard to defend them and I'm laughing at how their protests backfired.

Oh, if you want to go greek, join Alpha Epsilon Pi. They are the Jewish frat. They are a cool group and one of the few frats that is actually respected as a good organization (unlike the Tekes who were caught dealing drugs at Purdue LOL.)
