A scientist at Brigham Young University has found a compound produced by healthy immune systems that kills HIV in vitro. If further experimentation shows that it's safe and effective in vivo it may also be used to cure many other diseases.

theres gonna be a whole lotta screwing going on

That would be a welcome development for the estimated 40.3 million people now living with HIV/AIDS globally, including nearly 5 million newly infected in the past year alone.

those are some scary numbers

If it works, and works against other virii and other bacteria, it will be time to sell your stock in Trojans.

I've got $50 that says the "Pro-Life" lobby in the US will fight tooth and nail against any such cure. They'll tell us that it will encourage promiscuity and homosexuality, and that the sluts should be made to die in painful ways or else our children (THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!) will turn to Satan or some such bullshit.

There's already been a number of cures for AIDS, none of them have passed FDA approval yet, and it will take years for the one that does to finally get through.

And the whole AIDS prevents promiscuous behavior thing is bullshit, if people want to screw around, they will.

If it does indeed cure AIDS, I make this prediction: there will be some religious nuts trying to stop it from being produced because it's obviously against God's will!

You heard it first here, folks!

Shouldn't it be enough to malign them for the dumb shit that they do actually say rather then making up hyperbolic strawmen?

It is definately welcomed, even if a failure it is a step in the right direction.
Even if it slows down the process of AIDS it is a great advance for our time.
Now on to Cancer...

You know that, and I know that. But there are a small but vocal minority of fundamentalist religious wackos that don't know that and have all the freetime and money they need to obby the government in an attempt to control our sex lives.

This is why I'm currently developing the O-ray. It's a non-lethal beam weapon that stimulates orgasms in it's target. I will then use it on the fundamentalist religious wackos. :)

While this is certainly good news, the drug company that paid for the research will own any eventual drug produced and it will be ridiculously expensive or administered in many small doses making it out of reach to most people. The profits are in treatments, not cures or vaccines.

You're too late. I already invented that one. :D

BTW ... how does one "obby" the government? Sounds slightly obsene! ;)

"Straw men"? I invoke the Montoya Principle: I do not think that term means what you think it means.

this is a good piece of news on a day where you feel everyone is spending their time doing stupid things to each other.

I hope this is the breakthrough that helps prevent more untold misery and anxiety.

Like a real-life Orgazmo! That was a great movie.
Probably my favorite adult-themed superhero movie. That or Spiderbabe.

And we all know that even if this cure gets patented and produced, it won't reach Africa for a long...long time.

And as most of the people who have HIV/AIDS are poor it probably won't be profitable for the drug companies to produce the cure anyway...

It's goofballian slang for 'lobby'. I'd like to discuss the etymology of 'obby', but I don't think this is the thread for it. :)

As for you already inventing one, why haven't you patented it or sold any? Wait a minute.... I think I know why. ;)

good news if it is true

bad news if it is patented.

wont happen

it is more profitable to sell relief then it is to sell a cure

relief never ends, once the cure is used, theres no use for the relief or the cure

Normally, I would agree.

Entire industries are built on the backs of 'incurable' conditions. On the other hand, this condition, unlike herpes and blindness, kills.

With that said, it'll be impossible to keep it off the market. Somewhere, somebody or some government will market it. That being taken as a given, the original producers will sell it themselves. Better to make money off the cure than to lose BOTH treatment AND cure money.

A wonderful peace of news that could save millions of lives around the world and your first reaction to it is to be political and negative about it all. Cant for once people be nice.
