National "Go Off the Grid" Day

In response to President Bush's illegal wire tapping, I am proposing that Saturday April 8th for 24 hours, the entire United States population go off the grid. What does "going off the grid mean"?
- No Cell Phones
- No Email
- No Television (especially if you have digital cable)
- No use of credit or debit cards (Cash only)
On Saturday night, gather in your local town center and do something. If you have ideas post them here.
So far this is only a proposal. This is in response to the government having futher and further unlimited, unrestricted access to our personal lives. From an administration that said they wanted less government. Lets fight back against them and their corporate allies.
NATIONAL "GO OFF THE GRID DAY"!!!!!!!!!!
Sincerely

In response to this thread in a somewhere hidden location unknown in the USA -
"Hello Mr. President? Top Agent here for the CIA. . .yes, we have a thread that is attempting to defy our Patriot Act. . .it's on NationStates Forums: General. . .yes. . .what sir? Oh. . .okay."
The next day
"Today in a emergency call made by President George W. Bush, Go Off the Grid Day is officially banned and any following it will be arrested in suspicion of being a terrorists. As this defies the U.S Government's right to steal our rights way, the President marked that there are more restrictions to come to our Civil Liberties. This is Jean Yulanda from CNN."
The next day
The next day, Mavatesh was apprehended by police. On his computer were found many terrorist documents, including a plan to take down the national communications grid on April 8th. Compliant with the Patriot Act, he is now being interrogated at an undisclosed facility because he is a terror suspect. He may remain there indefinately.

oh, I thought you really meant "go off the grid" my husband and I are going to do that, we are saving up for one of these (http://www.ecocottages.com/), we have to get some land first though. The toilet kinda scares me, but I suppose I will get over it.

Why did you pick my birthday, are you just trying to get out of calling me and wishing me a happy one?
If you have ideas post them here.
It's not a bad idea, but it's not very practical. Our modern society is too dependent on those conveniences to be able to go a day without any of them. I doubt you'll get enough support to get anything done on a large scale.

Wow, those are nice. Personally I'm going to invest in some solar panels for my house with a room for the battries. I'll also invest in a Hybrid car. That way the only think that's hooked up is the cable Internet/TV and Cell phone.

I think they means information-wise. Kinda hard to monitor someone through their water. (Well, you could tell if someone was home or not I suppose) Or, failing that, their could be a well.

Well! My parents house has a well and they don't have to pay for city water.

yeah. I was talking about being off the grid for real, nobody keeping track of you at all, for all they know we won't exist (not that we are hiding or anything:eek: )
wells don't last forever though, we will have one as a "just in case" but mostly we will harvest rainwater.

How can you be completely off the grid if you're on the internet?

we aren't now. we are saving up to be.
I doubt that we will be able to be "completely off" though, I am internet addicted, and I think we will end up with broadband phone......

I'm almost there (I never do PoS with anything other than cash and hate using both email and my cell), and I still enjoy my civility.
Of course, to fully go off the grid, I'd have to dump the Interweb and quit being such a whore for AMC and the Discovery Channel, so that's not gonna happen.

Thanks- those are pretty nice looking. In the right location, that could be cool.
I'm buying a regular house now, but could consider one of those as my home office, instead of remodeling a room/basement of the house. I like the idea of it being seperate.

You need a cistern- there are companies that make/install effective cisterns.
I'd love to do the same someday as I locate people and their assets and all sorts of their business for a living. So I have this urge to make myself less and less locatable.
I'm looking foward to a simpler, less tied down style of living when my children grow up.

I think the point was to separate oneself from the various methods by which the government and others can watch you.

Are you suggesting that civilisation has only existed for about 60 years (at a push, ignoring the more recent things of the four)?

Those are pretty cool houses, Smunkee. In the future I may consider to do the same myself, not so much to disappear, but not having to rely so much on the public grids is appealing.

Ha. My birthday is the day after.
Seriously though, this is a good idea. It may not do a damn thing but it'll still be fun. Kind of like the Day of Silence, I don't think it really does anything when half my school is gay anyway, but it's fun to see if I can shut up for a whole day.

Join in a political statement. However, in order for it be effective you must get the word out.
