Here is the definition I have re-prepared for my Year 9 class. Have a read, and see if you can say it better than me. Please?

Stereotypes:

Stereotypes are generalisations or assumptions made about a group of people because of a characteristic that they share. It is assumed that everyone who shares that characteristic will act in a certain way. Some categories that are used to stereotype people are:
 Race
 Ethnicity
 Class
 Gender
 Language
 Dress/appearance
 Age

Stereotypes can lead to discrimination against a certain group, because of the assumptions made about behaviour in that group. Texts such as fairytales often use stereotypes to reinforce society’s beliefs about members of the group.

Sounds good. Remember to challenge some of their steriotypes that are more accepted, ask them what tony blair does on his day off for example. Try and get them to realise how much steriotypes dominate their world. Also, take a look at this: http://www.pointlesswasteoftime.com/monkeysphere.html, very interesting article that explains why steriotypes exist at all.

Yes, ideas. I have to explain stereotypes to a low-level year 9 class. And what they are used for. So what do you think about what I prepared?

Good start. You might also want to consider the origin of stereotypes. There's an old saying, "Stereotypes become stereotypes because too many people fit them." You might want to give some examples of why certain ideas about people became stereotypes, and how that has either helped or hurt society.

Edit: Nice article, Moto the Wise! Not entirely on topic, but I was entertained. :D

Yeah, I might do that. They're actually looking at why stereotypes are used by texts (reinforcing the dominant societal conceptions of class, gender roles, etc.), so understanding where they come from might come in handy.
