I am going to cry...

I spent an hour and a half today preparing work on stereotypes in fairytales for my year 9 English class. And now its all gone. It's not on my USB stick. My only hope is that it's on the school computer. Or im screwed for tomorrow. I lost my stereotypes definition that I painstakingly worked on for half an hour to ensure it was comprehensible to my class.

*sobs loudly* HELP!!!

I guess you could wing it.
Ask the students to get into groups and think of as many fairy tales as they can. Then describe the characters in each. See if they can find a common thread between the tales/characters. Ask them to think of why that is.
That should take up a fair bit of class time.

My kids don't do groupwork. They don't play nicely with others. the rest is good though.

*sobs loudly* HELP!!!if you're lucky, it would be on the computer you were using.

if not, I suggest writing out the points you were making and wing it.

then sign up for a speech class and learn how to do Impromptu speaking.

a skill I'm glad I learned.

I'm hoping its on the computer. And I'm redoing the work now.

I remember impromptu speaking from the bad old days of competition debating and public speaking. *shudder*

Go on google and look for data recovery tools. Download one and use it on your pen drive. If your file was deleted then it will recover it. One other thing that is could be is the problem that when your computer says it has saved the file to the pen drive it hasn't. All it has done is converted it to RAM, which it then uses to save. The computer has done everything it needs to, but the file will take a little while longer to save. If it is just text, then you would have had to pull it out ridiculously fast to have done this, but if there are a number of pictures there could be a half second gap, or more. If this is the problem, then it should be on the school computer. If you deleted it on the school computer, use the afforementioned data recovery tool to get it back. Good luck.

One thing to remember with USB sticks when using Windows - use the "Safely remove hardware" before pulling the USB stick out of the USB plug. Since they use volatile flash memory, any changes made to the stick without proper removal can be lost.

I have a sad feeling this is where my problem lies.

That is only a problem regarding what I said earlier about their saving method. It is just a way of checking that it isn't still saving. The rest of the time no damage will be done by just removing it.

I have a sad feeling this is where my problem lies.

Basically saving things to hard drive is pretty permanent, but saving to removal media like a flash drive is not. That's why Windows has the special "Safely remove hardware" feature.

Let's hope you copied the file from hard drive to the flash drive. If you moved it, then it's gone unless someone undeletes it on the PC (special software required).

As a rule, I always make sure Window releases the drive before removal.

As it's not on your stick the only other place to look is on the computer. As very few people ever delete anything they have created from their hard drive, that’s where it will be. Failing that though, it will be on the backup drive you created no?

Eh, I lost three nearly-finished 2000 word essays last year when my hard drive decided to implode. I'm afraid all my sympathy for other people suffering moments like this turned to murderous seething rage back then. Sorry. :p

I am really thinking that it's on the school computer. I'm useless with computers, and usually print everything out. But I didn't today because the printer was broken. Thanks for your sympathy and help guys.

Well, except for kanabia, but, I get you. Believe me, I understand. ;)

At least you're using flash drives which are much better than floppy disks when I started with PCs.
Your average floppy disk lasts a few years.

I lost 7 gig once, when I caught a nasty virus and had to reformat the HDD.
I tired to be postive about it and enjoyed the act of trawling through the bittorrent sites looking for the music I'd lost.

Ok, I know I was fooling myself, but it almost worked.

If you're lucky it might still be on your computer. Or, open up word again and it might recover it(hopefully). This happened to me on a paper I had to do and I recovered the first page, but I had typed 4.
I now save after every paragraph
BTW do you live in Chicago?

Impromptu speaking isn't a skill that needs to be taught. The massive amounts of adrenalin corsing through one's body as you walk on stage knowing you haven't a fucking clue as to what you're going to say usually helps enormously.
Some of my best classes have been the 3-step ones.
You know, the 3 steps before opening the door to the classroom is where you think about what you're going to teach.

I always keep at least two copies of anything important I need, printing it out if I have too. Really saves on these kinds of troubles down the road ;) :D
