It's interesting that when people describe their intelligence, they very rarely claim to be average or below average. Same with IQs. It's always 120+ IQ. Where are all the 100 IQers?

Meh, it came off awkwardly. I'm sure there is a more elegant way of phrasing those words, but I pretty much blew my wad of wit this evening on the Un-Japanese thread.
Ah, Socrates, what won't you do?

Anybody remember GURPS, where your IQ stat was basically every non-physical aspect of your character?
Willpower? IQ roll.
Fearcheck? IQ roll.
Aptitude for music, cartography, physics, magick, psionics? IQ.
Sure, you could tweak it with ads/disads, but your IQ stat was the starting point for just about everything you did with your mind.
A flaw in an otherwise cool game.

Well, I'm 112 I think. So there you go, I won't lie - statistically, I'm not very intelligent. And I suck at calculating things in my head.
At school and uni though, I get very good grades indeed, and I'll be doing honours and I got three recommendations from the Dean. Meaning that intelligence doesn't matter nearly as much as interest and a bit of a work ethic.

By what measure? I tend to score high on IQ tests (which measure nothing but "how well you can do IQ tests", IMHO) and quite good at logic puzzles (yes, I've been bitten by the Sudoko bug) but I'm stupid enough to be still up at almost 6AM, and thus having to make a decision over whether to go to sleep for a very short time, sleep for a normal time and miss most of the day or stay awake... (What I'm saying is that I'm so dumb about some things, i.e. common-sense, time management, etc...)

Not a very good poll.
Intelligence is as intelligence does. I've met more than my share of Einsteins who couldn't drive a car without wrecking, and had to be helped with their checkbook because they couldn't stop thinking about math and physics.
Common sense, while quite useful, is not measured on intelligence tests. Interpersonal communication isn't measured on intelligence tests, either, but it can give the impression that an articulate, friendly person is more "intelligent".
Acording to this one little IQ test i did my teacher was asking me if i cheated cause it was Einstein level... but no, I'm not that smart... smart enough though to have passed IB, for anyone who actually knows what that is
Einstein. Considering The Fact That By The Year 2100, Most People Will Be Retards, Concerning The Quickly Falling SAT/ACT/ETC Scores At Our Schools. Wait. I Also Said In The Year 2100, Wicca Will Be The Dominant Religion. God Damnit. I Must Now Go Punch Myself.
I think Einstein would have had better control over the shift/caps lock key.
Oh don't punch yourself, please allow me.
If there is a large amount of smart people, then they would be the new average. Since the majority of people are ranking themselves as 'Quite Intelligent' (Egotists), then they would be average, and the bar would be set higher.

Going to a good private school does not make you smart, you get in because you pay (unless of course, you won a scholarship).
Being dyslexic does not mean you are slow or stupid.
If you feel dumb, you must realise why you feel dumb therefore, you're not that dumb.

138. No genius, but no dumbass either.
I believe IQ tests are a pretty inaccurate measure as intelligence is something that cannot be wholely quantified. Furthermore, I put much greater stock in what someone DOES with their intelligence then how intelligent they are.

I totally agree. I have never done an IQ test, but a friend has, and she told me what kind of questions/task were in it - and it was just so, well, biased, for lack of a better word.
That was quite some time ago, so unfortunately I can't remember the details, but I do remember that we both (!) agreed that there were large parts of the test that were very easy for her to grasp and solve quickly solely because she was at medical school and all they ever had in ways of tests were that same exact kind of "multiple choice" style test, with questions/tasks structured exactly like she'd been used to for years.
We also both agreed that I, the liberal arts major, who has hardly ever even seen that kind of multiple choice test but has been trained in a whole different kind of scientific thinking/arguing, would most decidedly suck at that part, unless I didn't practice for it. Now if that right there doesn't invalidate the concept of IQ tests at least to some extent, I don't know what does.
On a slightly unrelated note, I don't even know which of the following poll options is "more intelligent":
"smart"; "quite intelligent"; or "a bright bulb"? I would like to blame that one on the language barrier, though. :p

As some other posters above I believe that IQ test only whether you're 'booksmart' or not. Studies have shown that the correlation between IQ and success in life decreases steadily the further you progress in your schooling/education.
What sort of intelligence do you wish to measure? The IQ?
Because if not we'd have to define what we mean by talking about 'intelligence'.

I'm pretty average when it comes to math, horrible when it comes to logic tests, got good enough test results when I went to the conscription tests to become a sgt. after basic training(although I didn't do the military service, I became a firefighter instead), pretty witty most of the time, average when it comes to practical things, horrible with economy and a genius/madman when it comes to relationships... oh, and I suck at Sudoku.
