PLEASE, people, would you get it through your heads that people are posting ignorant, incendiary comments just to provoke you? Stop giving them their satisfaction, and when someone posts something stupid/racist/offensive/annoying, just think a bit before you go apeshit on them and end up giving them the net drama they want so much.

Congratulations. You are the very first person ever to make this realization and post it. You have saved us all. Thank you for this blessing. What we need to do it now is codify it into the rules of the forum; making such actions illegal. Give it a cool name too, like "gnoming" or "dwarving".

The straw man fallacy is when you misrepresent someone else's position so that it can be attacked more easily, knock down that misrepresented position, then conclude that the original position has been demolished. It's a fallacy because it fails to deal with the actual arguments that have been made.

This sort of "reasoning" has the following pattern:

1. Person A has position X.
2. Person B presents position Y (which is a distorted version of X).
3. Person B attacks position Y.
4. Therefore X is false/incorrect/flawed.

The above straw man argument appears at about once a week on the net. This sort of "reasoning" is fallacious because attacking a distorted version of a position simply does not constitute an attack on the position itself. One might as well expect an attack on a poor drawing of a person to hurt the person.

Sdaeriji: your sarcasm is unprovoked, unconstructive, and frankly serves no purpose other than to get you off.

I never said I was the first, or that I saved anyone from anything, or that it was a blessing, OR that I had just invented the concept and criticism of trolling/flaming/whatever the hell smart-ass name you want to call it; but in the end, there have still been people - who probably should know better - who are giving in to it way too easy. Which leads me to the point.

I can ask people to stop if I want. None of your clever sarcasm is going to change the fact.

Now, I'm curious . . . what was the point of your post?

Your mother knows best attitude displayed in the first post is sickening and, having witnessed it countless times in the past, tiresome. People here do not need your help to see the error of their ways. People here do not need your help to prevent them from falling victim to evil trolls. People here do not need your help in determining what they should and shouldn't post.

In fact, "people" is purposely vague in an attempt to avoid offending anyone. If someone is being a troll, call them on it. If someone is biting on flame bait, inform them and ask them not to. Don't make these wussy threads titled to ambiguous entities to avoid confrontation while airing your grievances. If you can't defend your position against an actual person, then don't have it to begin with.

This is unprovoked, unconstructive, and frankly serves no purpose other than to get you off. - OHMYGOD! Now that is clever. Using an argument from earlier in the dialogue, applied to a different target, creating irony! Surely you are also, as Sdaeriji might suggest, the first to think of it.

If you have something real to respond to, or specific people, grow some nuts and address them where relevant. - Now, are you going to say that ignorance and trolling aren't "real problems"? Because I think you know better. And another thing you know, is that refraining from addressing every single instance of ignorance or pettiness on the forums isn't a matter of "nuts", but one of time and inclination. Trying to correct every discrepancy by bullying would be alot of work that could be accomplished by just one statemest addressed to the "people".

But making an arrogant post like this addressed to "people" doesn't do much for anyone. It's even a bit oxymoronic! - How does the post do nothing for anyone? People see it, which was the point. And you seem to be implying, when you say that the post is oxymoronic, that instead of addressing the problem it highlights, it adds to it. The difference here, is that a troll usually posts something unresolvable, or offensive, or just plain wrong, to incite the ire of the good people in forums who like a good debate. This is a waste of their efforts, I'm sure they'd prefer to argue real points with people who are looking for understanding, not a blind fight. And there was nothing factually wrong or offensive about my post. THAT is why it wasn't oxymoronic.

People here do not need your help in determining what they should and shouldn't post. - You should stop speaking for other people. YOU find me sickening, and YOU find me tiresome; do not pawn responsibility for your statements off on other people, and do not try to gain imagined authoriy by invoking large groups of people you do not speak for. It's kind of ironic that you criticize me for telling people not to post what they did, but are in turn telling me that I shouldn't post what I did: if I wanted to phrase it similarly to you, "People here do not need YOU to defend them from ME."

- If I wanted to avoid confrontation, I wouldn't have posted here to leave myself open to your "gentle instruction," Sdaeriji. I explain elsewhere on this thread why the one-to-one correction archetype is untenable. And, you talk about being wussy, but can you actually explain to me why offending people who have done nothing really all that bad is better than just making a statement as a whole? 'Cause that's what my post was, an honest statement of feeling. Get over yourself, please.

If you can't defend your position against an actual person, then don't have it to begin with. - Are you basing this on anything? Or are we just basing it on your infallible authority? In fact, I do believe I am defending my position against YOU, an actual person.

Sure, trolling is a real problem. It's dealt with by the moderators. This thread of yours will do about... jack shit, about trolling in general. You think you can just command people to ignore ignorance and pettiness? Doesn't work that way, Dorothy.

But making an arrogant post like this addressed to "people" doesn't do much for anyone. It's even a bit oxymoronic! - How does the post do nothing for anyone? People see it, which was the point. Yeah, people see it. They also see trolling. Trolling is not going to be resolved by your thread, so you don't do anything other than say, "there are trolls." Big deal, they exist on any forum, and people will always be trolled by them. Unresolvable. And wrong in the implication that you're accomplishing anything other than puffing yourself out to look superior.

i personally think trolls are an oppressed group in this forum, facing both repression from the mods and xenophobic hatred from most of the population. people say don't feed the trolls, but i think its the duty of all right think progressives and humanitarians not just to feed them and cloth them and see that they have access to affordable housing, but also to agitate for their recognition as full and equal members of our online community.

three - most threads are not how you make them out to be.

A few things in return:

- using words other people use doesn't make you convincing, overusing irony is not a sign of superiority, and repetition does not make you sound smart
- what, exactly, is offensive about my post? did I offend your religion, race, sexuality, sports team? do my statements demean your humanity?
- for that matter, what is ignorant about my op or my comments? being ignorant would mean that said something that is somehow wrong, and this is something any of you could have done by now, if it were true . . . and yet you have not. (I'm not being vague by saying "you," just unnecessary to list names at this time)
- one of you says my op was deliberately vague in order to be inoffensive, making me a "wuss", and now you say I am being starkly offensive. which is it?
- and how did you determine that I said what I did in my op "just to provoke you"?
- I hardly call a short, curt 3-line post going "apeshit".
- If my post is such a waste of space, why add to it?
- and, finally, I never made any claims about "most threads"; if you don't want to waste space, don't jump to conclusions.

Santa Barbara - Blah blah blah. Sorry you don't like being called on hypocrisy.
Hypocrisy is the act of pretending to have beliefs, virtues and feelings that one does not truly possess. I DO believe everything I said, I DO feel strongly about it, and I DO feel like it was necessary - and, perhaps more importantly - well within my rights to make the post.

Sure, trolling is a real problem. It's dealt with by the moderators. This thread of yours will do about... jack shit, about trolling in general. You think you can just command people to ignore ignorance and pettiness? Doesn't work that way, Dorothy.
I only brought it up because you refered to me having nothing real to respond to.

Why do you expect my post to have to DO something to have a right to be made? Speaking of doing "jack shit," what do you think any thread on these forums has done to change: personal height, local time, Wicca, religion, America, the desire for oil, or any given conflict regarding the Isrealis - just to name a few of the recent forum topics. Apparently, changing the world in a violent and positive manner isn't a requirement for the right of a thread to exist. Sometimes people just want to raise awareness of a topic, and discuss it.

What you are doing here, is affirming something I said, and then making a point of your own - this makes it look like you're refuting me with a very good counter-argument, when in fact you're not. And to address your accusation that the issue I brought up is unresolvable: as you yourself state, what I'm saying in my op is "there are trolls." That's all I meant to say. Sometimes reminding someone of something they already know, or have learned to ignore, can make them react in future with that fact stronger in mind, maybe even to effect; I'm sure you're familiar with the concept. So, my statement is resolvable, because it says there are trolls, and you've all said there are: hence, resolved. What you have said is that the problem of trolls is unresolvable, which is not the same thing. There will always be ill health, and yet we practice medicine - not in desire to resolve the problem permanently or even completely, but in a hope that conditions can improve.

I wasn't trying to sound superior. As people in this thread have clearly informed me - because I of course had no idea - everyone on the net is familiar with the concept of trolls and what they do, and clearly you've noticed them yourselves. All I was sounding, is annoyed.
