Where should I travel to this summer?

I have been saving up for a while, planning a trip somewhere, but I'm not exactly sure where to go. I was going to do some archaeological digs, but the main places I was interested in ((Menorca, Ballearic Islands, Spain) and Bosnia-Herzogovina) are both pretty expensive to travel to. I could go to Zurich for half the cost of Menorca. And, I'm not sure I want to spend my trip working for someone else, at least not this trip - I can do that later. SO, any suggestions where I should go? I would love to see Switzerland, and so far that's pretty high up on my list. I don't usually like the high tourist traffic places, because I prefer to see the real country (not the resorts, beaches, etc). I appreciate any suggestions.
Don’t travel. Save your money. Move to a place with easily accessible clean water. Get enough land for subsistence farming and start drawing. With your extra money buy gold bars, jewelry and guns for trading. Also, don’t neglect protection; you’ll need weapons and plenty of ammunition.
Peak Oil is coming and civilization as we know it will soon end.

Go to Cuba.:)
I just saw that Cuba thread, and I must say, it looks like a cool place. I just might. Are flights cheap there?

YES! Especially if you check the prices closer to the date of departure...they tend to drop dramatically. Go to exit travel (http://www.exitravel.com/home.asp?REFERRERID=EXITNOW&LangID=EN&WhatID=0) and search either flights or packages (that's all inclusive, flight, hotel, meals etc). Right now from Calgary there is a flight to Varadero for $500 (with all taxes) for 7 days, and a week-long all-inclusive for $1300.
Save your money.
For what? Retirement? So you can enjoy life once you turn 65? Na. It's more fun to enjoy life while you're young enough to actually have the energy for it.

Damn straight. And I've never traveled anywhere yet. I need to see the world some before I decide what I'm going to do for a career.

Wait... you don't want to go to Spain, because it's too expensive, but you'd love to travel to Switzerland... am I missing something here or did you get your countries mixed up?? :p
edit: err... right... if you do want to go to Switzerland I'd recommend Lucerne, Berne and Lausanne (especially the train ride from Berne to Lausanne is breathtaking)... do you happen to know anyone there? That would help you a lot with cutting down on travelling expenses...

No no, the reason not Spain is because it's the ballearic islands off Spain, which are over $2,000 round trip to go to. Zurich, for the same time period, I found a flight for $938 round trip.

Liechtenstein? Well, I were going to Swissland, I'd also do a European expedition so to speak, not just the one country... I guess that depends on how much money you want to spend too. Personally, I've always wanted to see Taiwan and India.

Oh, wow! I didn't know it was that expensive to fly to the balearic islands from over where you are ;)
You could always get tickets to mainland Europe and then hop on a cheap airline like easyjet, or vueling for trips to Spain.
But if you have some money to spend Switzerland is definitely worth a visit (or so I've been told... since I grew up there to me other countries were usually more appealing ;))
I'll admit it is really beautiful and all that... but I might be a little biased :p

You can hardly go 'on vacation' to Liechtenstein... even if you're just walking around you cross the whole country in one day :p
Depends what you like to do on holiday ie:if you like skiing you go to switzerland etc.

No... not really. ... not much skiing to be done in summer.

So you're a Swiss citizen, then? shame it's so bloody difficult to become one. Pretty much have to marry a Swiss, or wait a ridiculously long period of time.

It really just depends on where you want to go and how much money you have ;)
There are districts where the people get to vote on whether they want to grant citizenship to each and every 'immigrant' (meaning people who lived there for God knows how many years), of course, this is after the applicants passed a general 'Swiss culture and politics' exam no Swiss would ever pass... and in other districts you just fill out a form and wait for your pretty red and white passport.
But you're still talking about going there on vacation, right ;)
...that said, I'm still a citizen and not married :p

Heh. Ka-Ching!:)
Just kidding...
But yeah, still talking about just a trip. I'd like to work for the UN, though, and I'd much rather work in Geneva than New York.

The UN... I see where you're going, this sounds much more interesting than just a regular 'visit'!
If you have any questions about the country, wedding proposals or whatever, tm me, for I'm off to bed... :p
