Which alphabet should become universal?

I say that it should either be Roman or Cyrillic.

I'm kind of split down the middle. Latin is more compact, but cyrillic is much more straightforward with pronunciation. Granted there are a few exceptions, like the г in сегодна etc, but I think I can live with that.

There is already an international alphabet. It's called the International Phonetic Alphabet.

It's used in dictionaries. Everyone sort of halfway knows it, even people who use Cyrillic. I still say that Glagolithic ought to be the universal alphabet.

I don't want to favor a country, nation, or culture when it comes to an universal alphabet or language. It is inherently uninternational due to the favoritism that we would show if we chose the Roman, Cyrilic, Arabic, or (Why would we ever choose this for? They use the Roman alphabet to learn it as children!) Chinese.

So, instead of sitting around whining about it, I'll just start getting to work right now. I'm going to take a paint brush, and throw black ink on paper until I get a letter I like. Then I'll go to Ethipoia, and have someone due the same. I'll then fly to the Vatican, where I'll have the Pope particapate as well. After that, the Inuits are up....

Please vote for any alphabet you'd like, but make it a global alphabet, and not a universal.

The universe still performs quite well without us, so let's please keep the damage localised...

I'd vote for the greek alphabet btw, from which the word "alphabet" originates anyway...

All the more reason to suspect our Northerly neighbors that have milk in bags and say "zed".

Actually E, Й, ъ, ь are all not usualy quoted as letters unless you're just starting from a different alphabet. How do you pronounce a hard sign?

PS. It should be Roman, because everyone knows enough of it for it to be standardised, ie. most foreign people know more English (in this case) than we know their language.

Get the top linguists from around the world and invent a completely new alphabet. It worked for the Koreans!

I suggested the splattering of paint on papper by different people from all over the world, but no, Mariehamn doesn't know anything! Get the top lingusts? How is that universal?! That's like working from the top of the pyramid to the bottom! You gotta work from the bottom up!

The phoenician alphabet (one were using now if I'm not mistaken) but then I'm biased...chinese would be ok but it's too hard and very impractical for computers...how would we fit all those keys on one keyboard?

well, yes, our word alphabet comes from the Greek, but they got it from the Phoenecians (the first two letters of their alphabet - like hebrew- being alef and bet). I wouldn't recommend the phonecianisation of the world, though. I prefer an alphabet with more flow to it ....easier to write, and prettier to look at!
