Sorry to bother you with what is probably such a simple question to answer, but can i convert a .mpeg into a .mov or .mp4? and if so, how?

Search Google for conversion software. There's lots of free stuff out there. Not sure about these specifically, but I'm sure it's out there if you look.

http://www.wilisoft.com/download.html this program can split and re-encode the video for you assuming you have the right write codecs installed. which, if you can play a mov of mp4 (divx?), you probably do have.

alternatively use Windows Movie Maker (comes with XP: find it in accessories) or download the divx converter thingy (but i don't like that)

the short answer is you're probably going to have to re-encode the video, which means waiting as it takes ages doing it frame by frame

Windows Movie Maker is great for processing raw Fraps footage, but utterly useless for anything else. There is a range of Adobe products available which can repackage anything into anything, but they cost around $700.
