HOTMAIL IS DRIVING ME CRAZY

Whenever I try to open any of my folders within hotmail i just get a message from my browser (I use firefox as default, but the same problem happens with Internet Explorer) that tells me ...

You have chosen to open Hotmail which is an application/octet-stream from http://by101fd.bay101.hotmail.msn.com

It then asks me whether I want to open the program, then what program I want to open it with, or alternatively it asks me to save it to disk.

I get a similar message when i try to send emails by hotmail too. It's really, really irritating :headbang: . Can anyone help???

Have you got some weird settings in firefox? Maybe you should re-install it. But first, try answering the "what application?" question with firefox as your answer.

Tried it, didn't help.

No weird settings (or at least as far as I'm aware). I've tried re-installing firefox a coupla times and it didn't solve the prob. Plus, it's a problem on IE too, so I'm reasonably sure it ain't a firefox problem.

I don't get the problem - just checked my Hotmail just now.
It's probably the NineMSN thingy that appears when you login hotmail.

PS - Apparently with Gmail when you delete something, it's not deleted. Just shoved somewhere so the FBI, CIA or some creepy mob can read your deleted mail.

I think it might have something to do with the download manager. All the problems started then *shakes head ruefully* I downloaded leachget and my hotmail's never been the same ...

Loose Firefox. I know alot of people who have issues with it and Hotmail. It's something to do with a program setting I can't be bothered looking up. Install InternetExplore TabPlus and it's just like Firefox anyway... minus the bugs

I like the Firefox 1.5.0.1 but wasn't fond of the 1.0.x series though.

I just can't be bothered going through the hassle. I've never understood the FireFox craze. IE does the same things with less headaches. It's like asking to have your colonoscopy performed by the Doctor with the hiccups. Why ask for more pain then you need?

Wouldn't be w/o Firefox. It rules. As I said, I still have the same issues with IE, so it's not a FF problem.

Looks Like Gmail is the one for me ... but tomorrow. I'm going to bed now, if I can ever get away from NS. It's more addictive than crack!

With gmail when you archive something(which is what you almost always want to do) it stores it in a sperate folder which you can search later to find it if you want it. You can actualy delete mail if you wish but with 2.5+ Gb of storeage why bother?

I agree with the other posters. Get gmail.

From http://www.google-watch.org/gmail.html

Google offers more storage for your email than other Internet service providers that we know about. The powerful searching encourages account holders to never delete anything. It takes three clicks to put a message into the trash, and more effort to delete this message. It's much easier to "archive" the message, or just leave it in the inbox and let the powerful searching keep track of it. Google admits that even deleted messages will remain on their system, and may also be accessible internally at Google, for an indefinite period of time. For a few months they showed a note saying that messages left in the trash folder for 30 days would be automatically deleted, but many users reported that this never happened. Now that message, which is still present for the spam folder, is gone from the trash folder. Google wants very much to get to know you better.

This was what I was worried about.

Yeah I read the privacy policy. Its appears to be mainly covering thier asses incase deleted emails are still circulating in servers memory. As for encouraging people to archive things instead of deleting them, well its damn useful. Also with the "3 clicks to move something to trash", well is that really that difficult. Select the email, click the delete button, then click yes on the generic are you sure message. It then takes a further two to delete it forever. It takes only 2 clicks to archive it  shock and horror.

This page seems just a tad bit biased and anti-google.

I know they are biased but who else would report this kind of information?
Oh, if the USA government look in my deleted stuff - waste of time - it's 99.9% spam.

Because you are now letting the surgery being performed by the 90 year old doctor with bad eyesight and a high risk of heartfailure ?
The core of the IE engine is *old*. It is amazing what microsoft has managed to add on to it, but it never was designed to do all these things. Result: it is bloated, insecure and hard to keep updating. Which is why the next IE will not be backwards compatible.

I hate people who talking "core software". It's a meaningless buzzword. The new IE will contain a backwards compatibility feature, just like new Office programs do. It's irrelevant how old the basic program is, so long as it keeps being reliable.
