Once again the Oscar's are on their way. Here are my reviews of the films nominated for best picture. This is as close as I'll ever get to the Oscars. My films never do well. :(
Brokeback Mountain
This film has caused such an uproar in some communities. Will it win that coveted award? Lord, I hope not. So much love and tenderness, who knew so much drama could come from a fifty page book? Filmed in the outskirts an unimportant, barely inhabited state, it brings a tear to your eye. Either from the sadness or from schadenfreude. Guess which bore my tears? I give this movie 4/5, a unique spin on a cliche' theme. I recommend it.
Capote
Based on the life of Truman Capote, it follows him as he writes his msot famous book In Cold Blood. Philip Seymour Hoffman gives an A performance as that journalist with an almost understandable voice. With other performances by Catherine Keener (You know the woman from such classy films as Being John Malcovich and The 40 Year Old Virgin). I give this 4/5.
Crash
I didn't see it, but it sounds alright.
Good Night, and Good Luck
Enough to put any staunch McCarthyist's panties in a bunch, this film stars George Clooney and other lesser-known actors. It was slightly original, good writing, and was done tastefully in black and white. No sex, but the dialogue almost makes up for it. 3/5
Munich
It's not Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but what is? This film follows the unfolding events during the Munich Olympics. I didn't see it eitherm but it was by Spielberg so either it's good or it's shit.
