Federal Govt. Uses Gay Positive Message for Homeland Security

Or maybe that's just my interpretation of it. There's this federal homeland security family site (http://www.ready.gov/kids/family/dad.html) that's supposed to be useful for families to help plan for emergencies, and to appeal to kids, they've put together this family of cartoon characters--mountain lions, to be exact. Rex, the dad, Purcilla, the wife, Rory the child (no son--interesting), and Hector the hummingbird friend. I think I've figured out why there's only one child, though.

That's Rex, the Mountain Lion Dad. :D
Way to appeal to a stereotype I thought was beneath you, The Nazz. Perchance, next thread, you'll have fun with minstrels?

That's an interesting choice of animal. I always read about joggers and other outdoor enthusiasts getting mauled, sometimes to death, in the mountain urban sprawl out West. Not very friendly, or a good way to get a point across, in my opinion.

Like it or not Fass, stereotypes exist because on some level, they're based in reality. Getting offended by them doesn't change that.

And your piss-poor rationalisation doesn't change the nature of your post. "OMFG, it looks GAY! Bwahaha! Let's all laugh at the GAY mountain lion because it's GAY!!!!!".

Man that is about the most narrowminded thing I have seen in a while. It is a clever excuse for biggotry too. Anyone who judges people by the group is an idiot. People are individually diverse and stereotypes are a form of passive prejudice.
Stereotypes exist because someone didn't like something that and individual did and decided to assume that every member of the group that individual belongs to acts in the same manner without any basis for the assumption.
People who do not take the time to know individuals stereotype and therefore discriminate against people by the group.

i personally enjoy using "minstrels" or "merry minstels" as a fairly obvious code word for gay men. it doesn't have all that much cultural baggage, but its still seems kinda amusing to me.

You really think that's what I was going for? You never stopped to consider that maybe I was pointing out that the most homophobic government in the civilized world is using gay stereotypes on the page that's ostensibly about preserving homeland security, and by extension, the traditional family, and that that's just a bit odd?

On the contrary, they aren't the ones using the stereotype. You are. You are the one that started a thread about it "looking gay."

Perhaps because they already know that most American adults own one.

Dude, laughing at a stereotype doesn't make one hatefull. And the minstrel show image is funny to me because people were just so damn ignorant in the past. At some point we've got to get over our squeamishness and laugh at the dumb racist, sexist and homophobic ideas of the past.
My daughter and sons have their own guns, too.
Sure they do, should they exist.

The homophobic idea is not the one of the Government here, but that of The Nazz.

"Puppet discussions" are not allowed. Had I been your puppet, Fass would have been deleted a long time ago.

You shouldn't refer to your hypothetical, alternate-universe self in the third person, it makes one of you sound arrogant.
And you should quit thinking so hard about frivolous things. You've got to save some energy for making sandwiches.

well you know the old cartoon mountain lion snagglepuss always seemed a bit gay, or at least very campy.
Can't be an American, the creature isn't packing a gun.
It's an ironic choice for a mascot of a concerned fatherhood. Mountain lions are solitary animals with no paternal instinct. It should have been a wolf, but Georgie boy used wolves as a symbol of evil.

Wolves just don't have the demenor of cougars. How many times has a wolf went up to a hiker and given them a friendly nip in the kidneys?

This whole thread made my day. I'm sick and tired of people complaining about stereotypes of any kind.
We're definitely living in a world where a stand-up comic will not be permitted to make any jokes at anyone's expense. Probably not worth going to the show.

I just don't see it. I mean.. I guess maybe the scarf and the way he's standing, but I wouldn've thought that, if you hadn't mentioned what you did. And what's the difference in the kid being a girl, or boy? The only thing that popped into my mind of a hidden meaning, was that Hector the hummingbird is the US Gov., but a child (or anyone else probably.. being that I am somewhat paranoid of big brother)isn't going to think that lol. I think they're cute toons.
