Someone is bound to have brought this up already, since this game is arguably the best nation sim set in a near future environment. It was released in 99 and recently-launched Civ IV still borrows from its gameplay. Anyone up for a multiplayer match of SMAC? I'm at darienlkane(at)netzero.net if anyone is interested (having the 'Alien Crossfire' expansion pack is a plus).

You know, what i'd really love is a game like civ with the historical detail of europa universalis and the battle engine of the total war series.

give computers five years or so and they'll be there.

Ah Amen! I always wanted the battle control of Total War, the Settler/Finance/World map of Civ, and to be able to flip through all these down to an Age of Empires like city planner.

"Civilization: Total War"....6000 years of history, controlling basic spearmen, all the way up to mechanized infantry.
