Why do people posting questions about whether they should go to the doctor

People sometimes post here (and at other forums) "I have (some sort of medical problem). Should I see a doctor?"

I've noticed a spate of these over the last few days.

Why on earth do people do this? The answers are almost universally the same - either a jokey "You're going to die!" or "If you have to ask, yes."

Because asking people on the internet that they don't know is much better than any other possible thing the person could be doing.

Actually I was thinking the opposite. The last thing that many people want to be accused of is being a hypochondriac, so having several people tell them that they should go see a doctor makes their choice feel more rational.

Because people are stupid enough to trust us, and because NS General threads come in waves.

Why Physics, of course! There are five known forces in the universe:
1. Strong Nuclear Force, transmitted by Pions.
2. Weak Nuclear Force, transmitted by Bosons.
3. Electromagnetic Force, transmitted by Photons.
4. Gravity, transmitted by Gravitons.
5. Stupidity, transmitted by Morons.

Who says education is not a wonderful thing. That sums it up quite well. I am impressed.

Because doctors cost money and no sane person would like to be out of pocket over something minor. Admittedly asking that question in this forum would probably require more trust in the people who hang out here than I'd have but then again I was never a trusting person. ;)

Pretty much.

If you ask on NS General, you don't feel too embarrassed. Like, who gives a fuck, they don't know me. Easier than asking someone in real life. Computers/internet=easier than face to face

Especially if it's an injury with embarassing origins.

My father is a retired doctor. :)

I've got this feeling in my gut like something is jammed in there. I'm wondering if I should go to the doctor, or just keep ignoring it whilst drinking and eating crap food.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

I suppose some people are afraid of doctors. I know that my father refuses point-blank to go to his GP whenever something's wrong with him. He gets worried that the doctor might find something seriously wrong with him. I'm not sure how he thinks it is better to leave serious problems hidden and untreated than have them diagnosed, but I suppose ignorance is bliss.

Err, asking people here if I should go to the doctor? :p I don't have a death wish. Well, not right now anyway.

Uh ... how about because going to the doctor can be, like ... EXPENSIVE? Ya think? :p

That explains the Americans who do it, perhaps, but not the Europeans who do it too. They get it free! What's their excuse?!

We're attention seekers. Or we're lazy. Or both.

Isn't the NHS rather useless though?

Well, I COULD say that it's because they, like most Europeans, are attention whores, but I won't say that. Nope! :D

Just a little. Slow, sort of uncaring and heavily understaffed. But remember, it's free!

You still have to pay for the fuel to get to the hospital :p
