Musical Challenge
All right, you musical minded people, my music teacher gave us a half serious challenge.
She said if we could find a piece of music written in 1/4 1/2 or basically 1/anything, she would love to see it. Technically it is possible, but has it ever been done?

There is a song called "nilesdance" that has a measure of 1/4 in it. I'll go look it up...
Ok, got it. David Holsinger is a composer who can basically be called insane for the complexity of his music. He is the one who composed Nilesdance, which is the second song of a trilogy (Havendance, Nilesdance, and Graysondance, each of which represents the personality of one of his sons).

Type " 1/4" in a search box. Tada.

Hahaha! Written COMPLETELY in 1/n? That would be one HECK of an interesting song. There are songs written in say, 3/2, which can be conducted in 1 (subdivide: tri-pl-et)...for instance, movement III of Lincolnshire posy, by Percy Grainger. So I guess, it could have been rewritten in 1/8? Or something.
We almost did Havendance last year in band! It's a neat song, still have the part to it.
And in Loundoun Praises, by Brian Balmages, there are a bunch of 1/4 measures in the middle of the song, but never more than one in a row.

Heh ... yeah it's been done, but there's not much point.
1/4 time after 4 measures can simply be counted as 4/4.
7/8 and 3/2 are far more interesting.

Do you know where I could find a copy of the sheet music online? I googled but it didn't seem to be working.

Because it's a work for concert band, and the score and all the parts will cost you quite a bit ^__^ Here's the composer's homepage. (http://www.davidrholsinger.com/)
7/8 is a wacky time signature.

1/2 is also called cut time actually. It is either labled as 4/8 or 2/4 or by a big C.

"Cut time" is not 1/2, cut time is whenever the half note gets the beat, as opposed to the quarter note. 2/2 is the most common cut time, not any of the time signatures you mentioned. Also, I couldn't find a copy of the music online, but I'll keep looking. If you mention the author and the title though, your band director should be able to find it (although I must warn you, 1/4 isn't the only section with a confusing time signature in Nilesdance...)

Don't worry, at least I refrained from commenting that the big C means common time, or 4/4, and that it is a smaller c with a vertical line through it (like the American cent sign) that is the symbol for cut time.
oops :p
