Three men being held in Cook County Jail were shot Wednesday night in a quarrel in a cell they shared in the maximum-security wing.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. and guards recovered a .38-caliber snub-nosed revolver from the cell, said Bill Cunningham, a spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Police. Cunningham said police did not know how the gun got into the jail or what touched off the shooting.
"None was injured seriously, despite being shot at close range," said Cunningham. The inmates were taken to St. Anthony Hospital, Mt. Sinai Hospital and Stroger Hospital. One suffered a graze wound to the elbow, another was shot in the upper calf and a third was shot in the left thigh.
"All three were sharing the same cell in Division 11 of the jail, which is one of the maximum-security wings," said Cunningham. One was convicted of unlawful use of a weapon, the second held for kidnapping and armed robbery and the third held for first-degree murder.
No guards were hurt during the shooting.
