As some of you may know, I'm travelling to the UK (the flight is now scheduled for Monday evening). I'll be staying in London with occasional trips to Dublin.

A friend told me this about Dublin:
when your in Dublin, stay away from Temple bar, yes there are a lot of club's and stuff and people say it's a cultural centre, but really it's just British stag and hen parties vomiting in the street at 3am, any where else thoughis good, Collins barrack#s military museaum, the GPO, where the bullet hole's from the 1916 rising are still out front

Is this accurate?

Only one way to find out.

**books a plane to Dublin**

Is there any reason why you doubt your friend?

A lot of stag and hen parties do go to Dublin but not sure about the specific location.

*cracks fingers*

Alrighty then.

Temple Bar does turn into a bit of a British stag place on the Sat night's, it is true. I stay away from there as much as I can when I go out. But there are still good places to go in Temple Bar having said that- lots of nice restaurants- The Elephant & Castle is quite good, and there is this gorgeous Indonesian restaurant called The Chameleon just off of the main square.

Visit the Guiness Storehouse for a guided tour- very good tourist thing and also they give you a free 'taster'. Or if history is your thing- visit Trinity College smack in the city centre and go see the Book of Kells- the oldest illustrated manuscript of the Gospels in existence- its beautiful.

Collins Barracks would be a lot of military history and some other Arty exhib. also. Its on the Luas line (Red) - the light rail system- and its probably the quickest way to get there.

Depends on how long you are over for and what you intend doing for enjoyment really.

Oh and the GPO on O' Connell Street is an interesting (and still beautiful) building, and yes- the 'poc' marks can be still seen on the pillars and walls from the 1916 Rising.

Enjoy your stay :)

Definitely.
BUT you wouldn't want to miss out on that free freak show you get there every Saturday night. Get a pint, get a window seat and enjoy!

Really, for something like this you'd be charged in other countries. I always put it on the program when I have friends visiting from Germany.

Tsk. How could I have forgotten the weekend battles between 14 year skaters and 14 yr goths for control of the 'territory' *music of impending doom* :D

as has been said; yes, there is some truth in that but it's not all bad. any time i go out in town we usually end up in Eamonn Doran's or The Mezz (both in temple bar). Doran's does get som hen/stag crowds, but the Mezz seems immune.

The only freak show I remember from living in Germany was being in a bar when the soccer team representing the local fans lost the game. A mini-riot then ensued inside the bar. People who I had seen in there week after week, quietly drinking their beers became complete idiots.

I was wondering - what exactly is a "stag and hen" party, other than what I may infer from the name?

"stag party"=bachelor party.
"hen party"=bachelorette(?) party.

Trust me... I'm originally from Germany, and I witness a few soccer winners in my time. Nothing I've ever seen there comes even close to a regular saturday night in Temple Bar.

You gotta visit Kilmainham Gaol.Where the leaders of the 1916 uprising were shot. Its behind the guinness brewery.Poor bastards were shot in a yard with the smell of Guinness floating in.Stay the hell away from Temple Bar at the weekends. Its ok for artists during the week.If I can recommend the best resturant in Dublin it would be Shanahans on the Green .As a rule the best pubs in Ireland are the ones where old and young hang out together. If its packed with youngsters in designer clothes its more than likley shite. The scruffier the bar the better the pint.IMHO.Try to avoid O'Connell street late at night.Leason St is kind of seedy so avoid that.Lillies Bordello is where the celebs like to hang out.You should have a pretty good time in Dublin, but if that fails you can always come to the real capital..As the say the best thing to come out of Dublin is the road to Cork.;)

Agreed. Cork is easily the best city in the country. Until they finish building Galway, anyway.

If I'm going to be shot, there'd be no better way. (Aside from having a glass of Guinness in my hand.)

Being that close and knowing that your never going to taste the stuff again.Cruel and unusual springs to mind.Well worth a visit to both places though. Also if you do the Guinness tour you get to sample the black stuff.:D
