Valentines Day

I hate Valentines Day, it's another stupid holiday created by the likes of Hallmark to suck more money out of us. I also hate it because this will be the 3rd or 4th Valentine day without a girlfriend. Hey, I always strive to be honest. So, what is your feeling on this "holiday"?

It's two days after my birthday, so I get nice and depressed. I had a Valentine this year, but I lost her. :(

Hmm..I have to say I'm looking foreward to the Valentines'Day since my girlfriend and I are planning something special. Nothing fancy. We're both workalcoholics so spending time alone together would be sufficient.

Meh - I find it puzzling.
I've never had cause to celebrate it before in any way, but now I simply don't know what's expected of me. I already made him a pretty card, but appart from that, I really haven't got a clue. Any tips (trying to avoid the saccharine, expensive, and cliched if possible)?

EDIT: gosh darn it, silly puppet. this is Kreitz.

How about a home cook meal, and you rent his favorite movie and yall can watch it together on the couch.

Tell your parents and siblings that you need to borrow the house for the night. Pay for a hotel room if you have the money.

However, if that can't work, here's a back up plan.

Take him to his favorite resturant, and then take him to a movie that hes been dying to see. Then after that, maybe a little stroll under the moon light.

People have sex in the theatre all the time where I come from.
There's a viable banging place.
If that little stroll under the moon light happens to be somewhere more private, lust could suddenly compell you to have it right there, right then.
Turn Valentines Day into a sexual marathon!

Tell your parents and siblings that you need to borrow the house for the night. Pay for a hotel room if you have the money. that's a bit creepy for a holiday I don't much care about. I think I'll stick to the original, "hey sweetie, here's a card, and an extra kiss" plan.

Take him to his favorite resturant, and then take him to a movie that hes been dying to see. Then after that, maybe a little stroll under the moon light.He's been dying to see "Munich" - somehow, I doubt that'll be great for the mood. Maybe the symphony instead - we keep wanting to do that.

I hate Valentines Day, it's another stupid holiday created by the likes of Hallmark to suck more money out of us.Yes. I absolutely despise it. If two people care about it each other, why confine demonstration of that affection to one day? Surely how you feel about one another is more important than spending a fortune on some tacky card or something.

I never celebrated it when I was single, and I don't celebrate it now either. Meeting my boyfriend did not detract from my hatred of the day in any way. The only acknowledgement I make of it is to make sure I am in the house no matter what, away from all the bars and restaurants!

Meh. Girls like it.Not all of them, as you can hopefully tell from the above :p

*points to your post where you say that*

Getting angry, when used correctly, is better than getting sad and mopey. Any time. You can do productive things while venting anger, like washing the car, cleaning the house, and getting phsyical excercise. While when sad and mopey, crying can be good, but more often than not, it leads to laying around not doing anything and wallowing in sorrow. Better to get angry and do something about it.

Random wisdom, I suppose. ;)

i'm spending it with my gorgeous, clever, beautiful, just-generally-wonderful online/long-distance girlfriend of nearly 6 months, and god-damn am i looking forward to just being with her!! :D

sadly i cannot divulge any plans for the day - or presents or the like - because she might find out *shiftyeyes* ;)

edit: i've never so much had, or given, a valentine's card, so having someone i love to spend time with and get all romantic with on this day for the first time ever is just fantastic... i intend to let her know just how special she is to me (and not just for that reason, either :fluffle: )

I actually just had a first date which went fantastically well, seeing her again on the weekend and hopefully more often thereafter. :D I'll be out of the country for valentines (in Brazil for Carnival!!!) but will drop her a mail to let her know i'm thinking of her (if everything continues to go to plan that is!)

Is it just me or does single = bad valentines and couple = good on this thread? I've certainly had valentines i hated whilst in relationships because i felt there was this huge pressure to act like Mr Romantic and stuff, when i've been single on valentines i've had great nights out with my single mates chatting up random ladies.. if anything it was an excuse to open a conversation (as per felmars post above) happy hunting!

Hmm, I agree it's just a cunning ploy to get money out of us - but I told my boyfriend that we have to make cards for each other. It's more personal that way too.

I think it's a good opportunity to make time to spend with each other where you wouldn't normally, so it's useful in that respect. However, tacky teddy bears are OUT. Chocolates in a red fluffy heart shaped box are OUT. Flowers marked up 300% just because it's Valentine's day are OUT. All other gross, saccharine, overpriced Valentine's day tat is OUT.

Every time valentine's day comes around, there's always the inevitable backlash...

To paraphrase it: "I can't get laid so i hate valentines day"

Get over it. You aren't in any way entitled to a relationship. Whingeing just makes you look pathetic and it won't help your situation none. The world has bigger problems than your self-pity.

Sorry for being harsh, but things like this really shit me.

I agree...don't see why everyone has to take it out on the day because they ain't in a relationship. Sure, it's mostly just there to get people to waste money, but if it makes people happy then what's wrong with it?

The problem is, that if you aren't Mr./Ms. Romantic on this stupid and pointless day, you'll end up sleeping on the couch. So, the guys (and girls...maybe.) have to buy expensive crap that probably won't last till March to keep their sweetheart happy. Personally if I was going to celebrate Valentines Day, I would make it more personal.

Nope! However, the story behind my rant is that well, I just found out another one of my ex is now married. It kind of sucks when all of your exs are now either engaged or married. Well, time to crawl inside a bottle. I now see where grandpa gets his drinking habits.

I don't like the holiday because I don't like the idea that I need a special day to show the person I'm with that I love them. It's like, am I supposed to ignore them the rest of the year and then go buy something so for that one day they are special?

I'd rather just show the person I love, that I love them everyday rather then once a year.

There are 4 days each year when a woman expects her man to put everything else aside, and focus on her and her happiness for the entire day. He doesn't necessarily need to spend money, he just needs to make her the absolute center of his universe for the day. Those 4 days are:

* Valentine's Day
* Her birthday
* Their anniversary
* Mothers' Day (for those who are mothers)

That is the expectation. On those days, men can either earn bonus points or lose a major opportunity... but there ain't no standin' still, as they say.

Usually, it's a very good day for me. Can't wait to see what this year holds! :D

The only bad thing is having to write "SPEND NOTHING" on my calandar for the entire month afterwards, as I have no cash :(

In short:

The holiday itself is great, a time to tell your significant other how much you love them. The thing I dislike is the price hikes. Last year my brother paid £100 of a dozen Red Roses, which is just ridicliouly OTT.
