Losing My Best Friend

My cat named Boboe is ill with panleukopenia aka feline distemper. He has been ill for nearly five days and is on a downward slide. His gums are covered in bleeding uclers that prevent him from eating. He has a low temperature and a low red blood cell count. This makes it so his blood won't clot much anymore. The vet says we should consider putting him down. I plan on giving him two more days and if there is no improvement then I'll put him down. I don't want to make him suffer but he's my best friend and I don't want to lose him. The one thing that makes me want to keep him alive is the fact that he is happy to see me every day when I go to visit him. What should I do?:(

Next time get him vaccinated. Distaemper vaccines should be standard every couple years at the vet's.

Him and the female cat kept having kittens so we were trying to get them fixed before the vaccinations and we did get him vaccinated but it isn't enough...

Put him down. He shouldn't have to suffer unneccassarily.

Put him down now.

Don't delay. The longer you wait, the harder it will be.

My first cat went MIA when I was 5 or 6, and then my hedgehog died october 2004. Losing pets totally !@#$ing sucks.

Rather crudely put, but true.

The cat's suffering should be weighed against hope.

I've had 2 cats die of cancer, and 3 from others from age (I'm a cat person, I've had very many cats).

It's always really hard. They aren't just pets after you've had them for years, they are family. The worst part is watching them suffer, and knowing that their time is up. I don't think there is really any hope left for your pet, and I'm sorry. The best thing you can do is just let the vet put him to sleep peacefully. I wouldn't want to make any of my cats suffer through that.

(And for a sad tale, my cat Julie was one of the cats who died of cancer, and she did so only a couple months ago. She had gone through to chemotherapy treatments, and had lost a lot of weight before we finally decided to put her down. She became really sensitive to touch, but was still one of the kindest cats I'd ever seen. According to my dad, when he took her to the vet for the last time, she purred the loudest that she ever had. He said it was probably because of all the people who were being kind to her. I think it was that she finally knew that she wouldn't have to feel pain anymore... :()

My cat named Boboe is ill with panleukopenia aka feline distemper.

Mmkay ...

As a multiple cat owner, I have only one question: Did the cat come with distemper, or did you allow it to grow out of your own laziness?

Look, I know it's a tough thing, but if you have adopted this animal, then I say kudos to you, but the time has now come to make a harsh decision.

If your blase laziness (which most people seem to have about cats) is the reason this animal has distemper, then you will get no sympathy from me.

I am not passing judgement at this point. I am merely asking for the circumstances behind this cat getting sick under your care. After all, we love the idea of a happy companion coming to greet us at the door after work, but many of us refuse to do what is needed to keep that up.

My cats, my original cats whom I got at 6 weeks old, are now 12 years old and I have spent around 8,700 bucks making sure they've been healthy and well taken care of. I've even taken out loans from the bank when one of them got kidney stones to ensure their medical treatment because there is no "Kitty Insurance".

So don't get me wrong, I am not passing judgement. I am merely asking why you got the animal in the first place. If your intentions are truly honorable, you will refinance your car to save this animal.

8,700 dollars.....Look the cat is suffering its the right thing to do is to put it down. You want to keep it alive so you will be happy but is the cat happy? I doubt it. Not to be heartless or anything I had 3 cats that I raised from when they were kittens and when it came time I had to put one down instead of letting it suffer so I would be happy. Its as simple as that.

I feel your pain man, I know what it's like to loose a cat. I lost my first ever cat on July 4th 2005. She was my best friend also. She was just too old and too tired to go on. Look, if she's suffering and if she's in constant pain, then it's time to put your cat down. I know it's hard, but putting a cat down is more humane than letting it suffer.

I love my Skuttles, a Ragdoll neutered male cat, more than I can explain. He's certainly one of my best friends, if not the very best one. But because I DO love him so much, I would never allow him to suffer just because I wanted to keep him with me. I can't bear to allow anything living to suffer when I have it within my means to alieviate it ... or stop it. :(

I love cats but you are a dick. Not everyone has 8,700 dollars to spend on their animal. You aren't doing an old cat any favors by prolonging it's life for a year of pain (yes animals hide pain even from their masters) with some expensive treatment.

This cat has sores on it's mouth and can't eat? That sounds pretty horrible to me. Put it down and stop putting your own attachments above the cat's pain. Animals can't tell you they would rather die than suffer you've got to do it out of respect.

Indeed.

It is BECAUSE you love an animal, that you wouldnt want it to suffer.

My dog is 13, almost 14, and a while back, he was fairly sick.
Both ears were infected, as was his eye. His skin itched so badly, he had sores on his side from scratching. He had mucus all over his mouth, and was pretty listless.

Fortunatly, all he needed was some antibiotics, some cortizone, and some steroids.
Now, I have a happy, old bouncing dog, again.

But, the time will come, when medicine wont do any good any longer, and he will have to be put down.
This dog saved my life, and I owe him that.
So, when the time comes, he will not suffer.

Parting with your beloved pet is hard, but to prolong his suffering, becuase you cant bear to let him go, is cruel.

If the decision were left up to your pet, and the role reversed, your pet would likely not hesitate to ease your suffering.
Do the same for them.

Its a long story, and one that involves much mushy stuff on my part.
It wasnt an act of heroism per se, but nevertheless, he did just that.

our cat went through something similar a few months back - some kind of digestive problem where he just wouldn't eat anything and spewed what he did eat right back up. he wasted away over about a week and then died :(

my opinion is that you should make the best of the time you have left with your cat. i know he/she might not really be engaging or want company at this time (cats are snobby and very indipendent, i know) but make the best of it, and if he isn't in pain then don't put him down and just let him live out his life naturally.

Just let it go?
