For my "US and the World" class, I am writing a paper about the working conditions in the 19th Century. For a change of pace, I'm going to write it from a distinctly Communist/Marxist slant.

I'm going to open the paper with a communist quote, be it Lenin, Marx, Engels, Trosky, or even Mao! I need a good commie quote! I hope you commies can provide this prole with some good quotage!

It's hard to find good quotes in a book. THANK GOD FOR GOOGLE!

The worker becomes all the poorer the more wealth he produces, the more his production increases in power and range. The worker becomes an ever cheaper commodity the more commodities he creates. With the increasing value of the world of things proceeds in direct proportion to the devaluation of the world of men. Labour produces not only commodities; it produces itself and the worker as a commodity -- and does so in the proportion in which it produces commodities generally. -- Marx, Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts (1844)

i'd deal mainly with marx and engels. trotsky, lenin and especially mao were prodominately 20th century figures their references to and political impressions of 19th century condition will tend to be sparse and scattered while that's all the m&e were about.

Those are both very good quotes. I can incorperate both of them into my paper.

I don't know if he actually said that though.

"The Communists disdain to conceal their views and aims. They openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions. Let the ruling classes tremble at a communist revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win.

Proletarians of all countries, unite!"

Pfft, marxists.org was the standard text back when I was in high school and studying the October Revolution. Now the Anarchist FAQ,http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/1931/, there's something that may get you into trouble. It's non-Marxist though so may be of limited use. Still, its well organised and has HEAPS of stuff from Goldman, Kropotkin, DeCleyre, Bakunin (why do I always want to type Bukharin... eugh) and other historical anarchists, aka non-marxist communists, neo-marxists, anarcho-communists, libertarian communists or whatever else we're known as. :P

Also there are heaps of Che um... fansites... that should have lots of info.

Religion is the Opiate of the masses

Karl Marx

Winner's don't do drugs

The FBI

Just an amusing quote I found on the 'net. On a serious note, newer editions of Das Kapital etc may well have quotes from their pages on their backs you can use - I know of several history texts that have that.

Religion is the Opiate of the masses

Karl Marx

Except for the fact he never said that.

Try "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." instead.

Try "The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Working Men of All Countries, Unite!" instead.

It should also be noted that The Communist Manifesto wasn't written solely by Marx, but in partnership with Engels.
