Camouflage

Having been around quite a few different sorts of camouflage lately (marpat, cadpat, flecktarn, tropentarn, acu, multicam, knock off digital, british, &c &c)
I've been thinking about them, and in my experience (limited as it may be do a desert environment) multicam is both the best-looking and the most effective.
Anyone else have thoughts about camouflage?
I think ACU looks atrocious, like pajamas, and doesnt work. ACU alone would probably prevent me from joining the military.

Well, here in Dublin, if you want to blend in, wear stilettoes, fishnet stockings, a skirt that shows the thong you wearing and everything else at least two sizes too small.
If you're a guy, white trainers and any kind of sport clothing.
I hope that answers your question...

while going out round here (or practically anywhere else in the UK) as a guy, spike up your hair, wear a white short-sleeved ("designer") shirt with a light (preferably blue) pattern, designer jeans, and reek of too much deodourant

Actually, if you're talking about true camouflage, the very best is that which fits the environment in which you plan to operate. I've had ghille suits which effectively rendered me "invisible." Ghille suits are, however, a special case and not technically a "uniform." Cabela's sells a leaf and tree bark camo uniform which is the best I have ever seen for a Northern latitude forest environment, but is not accepted in the military as an approved uniform, except for certain special operations teams.
For desert camo, the standard issue uniform is the best, especially the night desert disruptive pattern.
Other than those, you're on your own. :)

I make my own ghillies several times a year. Mostly for woodland use, but I have made an urban ghillie. Burger wrappers, cigarette butts, crushed beer can, the works.

3-color desert isnt nearly as good as multicam in my experience trying to spot people in both!
Pictures never do multicam justice, but here's a page filled with them:

I have no real experience in dense woods with it yet.
And ghillie suits are indeed exceptional, but not for every engagement.

Now that you mention it... I haven't seen many around. They must blend in really well with the crowd :D

I've sold them to local police, who lay near dumpsters in them in broad daylight to watch drug buys.
Not very useful for moving though.

Oh, but there's no need to camoufalge that. Just pretend you're a smoker and put them into one of those mailbox/ashtray thingies outside pubs.
But if you insist in dressing up for the occasion, you may want to put on some of the cheapest clothes you can find at Penneys, shave off most of your hair ans spike up the rest ans walk around with your mouth slightly open and a permanently puzzled expression on your face. And don't forget the most important bit : The smell. Use two packs of persil on your clothes, add about one can of Axe (a cheap imitation might even be better) and make sure to reek of Vodka.

It's good, but the whole issue is moot if you're dealing with an opponent who has infrared capability. I've heard rumors that the US Army has developed an infrared opague material, but that it makes you hotter than hell by keeping most of the heat from escaping. Not bad for cold weather operations, but definitely not something you would appreciate in most other environments.

I've found that cutting an umbrella in half, and pushing it forward of you while you low crawl defeats thermal imagers until you get really close.
I got within 50 meters of two people using handheld thermal imagers trying to find me - I had crossed over 500 meters of terrain without them seeing me.

Kewl, but I've never enjoyed low-crawling and I cannot imagine trying to do so with half of an umbrella to push! :)

They were defense contractors trying to prove that their thermal imagers would make it impossible for snipers to stalk you. I took all morning to crawl up to them, and I laid there a while listening to them talk.
For a while, they didn't believe that anyone had been sent to stalk them, and were laughing at how stupid the Army was to try and trick them.
I fired a blank from only 50 meters, and they jumped like they were stung by bees.

The deer can still see you, they just don't care.
