Bad day to be a burrito!

I'm craving mexican food. I'm just trying to decide if I want to make a late supper of tacos (I have the ingredients), if I want to run to the store and upgrade to burrito shells, take a long drive to the nearest decent mexican restaurant( about 40 miles away), or settle for Taco Bell.

What shall I do?

Any decent mexican-type recipes you feel like torturing me with?

Make the tacos.

And, no.

Yeah, go with the tacos.

Avoid Taco Hell at all costs...go to the Mexican restaurant. If the craving is that strong, the reward is worth it. Of course, I'd tell you to make something yourself but my culinary skills are subpar...which is why I would drive long distances to go to restaurants.

That's too bad. I threw up last time I ate there. (I'm not kidding)

I had Chipotle for dinner. The burritos are the size of a small planet.

I like it. But it's not quite mexican food. It's more like a close cousin. *nod*

If I didn't eat things just because there was a good chance it would make me sick, I would be on a starvation diet.

Most definately. It is its own genre of food. As to throwing up and stuff after that is your own problem (one you may want to get checked out). Taco Bell is, believe it or not, one of the cleanest restaurants in the United States due to all the constant inspections and because it is a giant corporation.

Go to taco bell and get the steak quesadilla. Its is the best [and only edible] thing on the menu.

Ok, i'm gonna go on a little rant here:

Taco Bell, and all the other look alike restaurants suck, period, end of coversation. They basically serve everything with cheese!!!! Hell, not even mexican(white) cheese!!! But sucky american cheese!!!

Drive that 40 miles for real mexican food!!!

I'd say go for the restaurant if you're willing to make the 40 miles drive.. otherwise, hit Taco Bell, because it's like mexican food, and it's pretty cheap.

The 1/2 potato burrito thing is a pretty good investment... or, as someone else said, the steak quesadilla (get them to put extra jalapeno sauce in it, and it's pretty good)...

Not bell, that is. Do it yourself. Think how much more satisfying they'll taste!

what the hell is a burrito shell?

Yes, but I bend more than 180 degrees, thus making me a reflex anglo. :)

A soft flour tortilla, typically larger than a soft taco or fajita shell so it can be wrapped up with the yummy ingredients inside.

why would anyone call that a shell rather than "flour tortilla"?

you must be an anglo

I had Chipotle for dinner. The burritos are the size of a small planet.
This is what happens when places don't have decent burrito bars around. I visited a friend who tried to show me a Chipotle, man...'round here you'd get run outta town with that noise...

Ahhh, crap-I'm a burrito snob. There was a place down the street from one of the places I used to live that served a burrito the size of my forearm-no kidding, it would fit in the crux of my elbow and extend to the tips of my fingers. If you actually finished it in one sitting, you would pay. Dearly.

I guess Chipotle fills the big burrito void, if you don't have decent burrito places around. I'd be glad to have it if I didn't have an alternative.

LG...I forget which town you're in, but have you ever tried Puerto Vallarta or El Sombreros? Both are pretty good (hopefully you can tolerate mariachi for the latter).

I'm a bit more partial to Japanese than Mexican, but my family tends to side with my sister (the opposite of me)

and taco bell is disgusting. I swear it isn't even real meat.

YUCK!
I live here in Japan with a chance to go home for the Mexican food I grew up on in Texas only every few years, and I wouldn't touch a taco hell even if they opened one up accross the street from me here in Osaka.

Any decent mexican-type recipes you feel like torturing me with?

One of my faves: Carne Adovada (marinated pork butt)

8-24 dry red chile pods (amount and type depending on how hot you want it - I like it hot, so I've been known to use 24 habaneros!)
garlic, oregano, cumin, and salt to taste (IIRC, you cook, so you'll know waht you like - I usually use 4-6 cloves of garlic, and a couple of tablespoons of the others. )
4 cups chicken broth, red wine, and/or water
4-5 pounds pork butt or loin (or beef), cubed 3/4th-1 inches
1 onion, diced
oil or lard to brown the meat in

Brown the onion and garlic.
Roast the chilies.
Puree chilies, onion, and garlic.
combine the pureed mix with the other spices and liquid, and mix well to make a marinade.
Marinate the meat in this overnight (at least 12 hours - 24 is better).
Brown the meat.
Either bake at 350 for 1.5 hours or until meat is well cooked, tender and falls apart.
Alternately, you can crockpot it until the meat is equally well cooked.

Serve it up with tortillas and beans (and sour cream is good as well). Additionally, you can cut the meat in strips so it's more convenient for burritos.

I had Chipotle for dinner. The burritos are the size of a small planet.

i would do very bad things (murder, you perverts!) for those burritos. i had the shirt with the snake, before it was destroyed by my dog for smelling like chipotle. i wasnt angry. hell, i tried to eat the shirt on more then one occasion.

needless to say, i go there often. even better, the chipotle here is next door to an eb games. which is next door to a boarders (2nd favorite store)
