Well, I can't be there but this Friday there's an action on in Melbourne, organised by the Campaign for Women's Reproductive Rights.
Health Minister Tony Abbott will be the featured speaker at the 27th
birthday dinner of the Endeavour Forum, whose mission statement is to
"counter feminism, defend the unborn and the traditional family".

This is the chance for all pro-choicers and defenders of women's rights to
tell Abbott and his allies what we think of their misogynist, homophobic
and anti-worker agenda.

Rally 6:30PM
Friday, 3 February
St Michael's Hall
2 Victory Blvd (cnr Victory Blvd & High St) Ashburton Near Ashburton
station on Alamein train line
Hope to see lots of fiesty feminists there. :)

Ack. I'd be there. It's just that I'm 16000 kilometers away, so that's a bit of a problem. :p

I don't necessarily want people to say anything, rather for them to see this and go along on Friday.

Homophobic. :p:confused:

Assuming you meant abortionists, why do you think that that specific branch of medics are so cute?

When all the abortion mongers march, are they going to try and make chants about how all who oppose them are homophobic?

That shit would be funny.

It's a bit sad you need to have one. I guess we're spoilt here, seeing as abortion hasn't been an issue since the 50s or something like that, and any politician even so much as to suggest threatening women's right to choose would be committing political suicide. Why, oh, why can't the rest of the world just legalise it and move on already? *sigh*

You obviously know nothing about Australian domestic politics. The current government - of which this minister is part - has been very homophobic in its policies. So, please, pipe down if you know so little about the situation in the country you're trying to speak of. You're coming across as ignorant as you probably are of it.

Abortion mongers? Grow up.

There are other issues which make Tony Abbott homophobic you know, like his opposition to gay rights and his "family values" (i.e. homogenous nuclear, hetero family values) Try not to speak before you're aware of the context.

Well for the vast majority (something like 80% in polls) of people here abortion isn't an issue. It's legal and that's cool. It's just that the religious right is on the rise, and Tony Abbott is one of their champions.

It's scary.

Good luck with the protest then! You have Nordic support! :)

:) Thanks. There are also monthly abortion clinic defences, which are always fun because the people we're defending the clinic from try to pray for us. Hehe.

It's nice to see that the prayers are, as always, wastes of time. At least it keeps them from actually doing something.

Heh, that reminds me: a couple months ago I made a pledge in the "Pledge-a-Picket" (http://www.ppsp.org/PledgePicket-index.asp) campaign of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Pennsylvania. I thought theirs was a brilliant idea:

Every time protesters gather outside of our Locust Street health center, our patients face verbal attacks from them. They see graphic signs meant to confuse and intimidate. They are sometimes blocked from entering the building and occasionally they are videotaped. They are offered anti-choice propaganda and free rides to the closest "crisis pregnancy center."

Staff and volunteers are also seen as targets. We are all called murderers, are lectured to about committing sins, and are told we will pay the "ultimate price" for our actions.

You can stand with others in the community against these
acts of intimidation and harassment.

Here's how it works: You decide on the amount you would like to pledge for each protester (minimum 10 cents). When protesters show up on our sidewalks, Planned Parenthood Southeastern Pennsylvania will count and record their number each day from October 1 through November 30, 2005. We will place a sign outside the health center that tracks pledges and makes protesters fully aware that their actions are benefiting PPSP. At the end of the two-month campaign, we will send you an update on protest activities and a pledge reminder.

Gotta love that. :)

That's brilliant! I think I'll suggest that to the place we go to. And that way I can contribute even when I'm out of state. Awesome. :)
