what CDs have you bought recently?

assuming people still buy cds, that is... i find getting music p2p too frustrating nowadays and if you want to build an actual music collection, there's nothing like owning the whole CD or having something tangiable to play. ok you can download full albums easily from pay-services like napster but, as i understand it, DRM is a pain in the ass. owning the CD yourself is the only way to make sure the music is yours to do with that you will... (and not be cheating the artists out of their dues)

anyway this isn't supposed to be a thread about the evils of DRM or p2p... i just bought some albums on amazon and realised there hasn't been a thread like this for a while...
so, whats the last cd(s) you bought?

i just got

John Lee Hooker - The Best of John Lee Hooker
Gary Moore - Ballads and Blues
Joe Satriani - Engines of Creation (again:rolleyes: )
Stevie Ray Vaughan - The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
Santana - The Ultimate Collection

been wanting to get some good modern blues for some time but its taken a while to figure out some of the artists to get... and the John Lee Hooker and Satch ones are just extra :)

Picked up Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex OST 2 today. Love the techno-jazz flavour and multi-lingual vocals.

Unfortunately, doesn't contain the opening and closing themes. Guess I'll have to track down OST 1.

I almost always buy CDs (mostly on eBay or Amazon Marketplace). I love the "feel" (i.e. the design, colors etc.) of a real CD and booklet.

The last two were "The Creek Drank The Cradle" and "Our Endless Numbered Days" by Iron & Wine. Meh. I'm the fool who hears one song she loves (in this case "Such Great Heights" on the Garden State soundtrack) and decides she needs the album to go with it RIGHT NOW. Or, in this case, actually 2 albums. By a band I hadn't even known before. Turns out they're like a boring version of Simon & Garfunkel.

And off they go to eBay...

I tend to only buy actual CDs these days if I really like the band or the songs on the album. Otherwise I'm happy enough to download. I think the last time I did buy a real CD was about August or so last year; HMV had a nice 4 CDs for £20 option. By some beautiful miracle, the only four Queen albums I didn't have* were included. So I bought them and completed my collection for much less than expected.

* They were:
Hot Space
Jazz
The Game
The Miracle

Although the latter two are pretty good, these albums are hardly Queen classics. Nonetheless, I always intended to have all their albums, so they were needed.

Sure...I would avoid most of those on the list if you're not into the genre of metal with a fantasy theme, but Nightwish (a mix of heavy metal and opera) are excellent either way. Their vocalist is out of this world. Either one of those CDs I mentioned is an excellent taste of what they have to offer. My only criticism of them is they tend to be repetitive in their musical style, at times. Within Temptation is also quite good, although not on par with Nightwish. Their work is well worth trying out though. Emma Shapplin is a modern opera singer, who performs in Baroque Italian. If you're into opera, she is heavenly. If not, give her a shot anyway.

I take it you missed their gig at the Spring and Arsebreak last year then? Quite honestly it was the loudest gig I've ever been too, and that's speaking from over seventeen years of regularly watching bands. Quite incredibly loud. You could hear the music punctuated every few minutes by beer glasses smashing after being shaken off the tables.

She likes the way that the language conveys her thoughts and emotions. She is French, thus able of speaking one of the most fluid and expressive languages out there. Yet Baroque Italian lends it an antique romance I guess, a bit like Latin would. Either way, her work is excellent.

Nightwish's vocalist, Tarja, is a Finnish opera singer, so her warped accent is actually one of her main assets, at least in my view. Her voice is very deep and resonant, even angelic. Even live she is awesome.

Sadly, that is no longer accurate because Tuomas is an immature douchebag. Tarja was kicked out a couple of months ago because she wasn't willing to give all her time to Nightwish. Tuomas didn't even have the decency to tell her to her face, he gave her a letter onstage after their last show.

[QUOTE=Pure Metal]
so, whats the last cd(s) you bought?
QUOTE]

lets see, i bought...

Bloodsimple - A Cruel World
Bullet for my Valentine - Hand of Blood
10 Years - The Autumn Effect
Cradle of Filth - Nymphetamine [Import]
Deftones - B Sides and Rarities
Underworld Evolution OST
T-Pain - Rappa Turnt Sanga (i love "im in love wit a stripper", what can i say?) :mp5:
The Used - Self Titled and In Love and Death
Dry Kill Logic - Dead and Dreaming

but some of these i downloaded first to see if they were any good, if they were really good then i bought a hard copy, but most i just burn to cd cause artists never make good cds all around, they do like a couple. well, a couple doesnt justify my 15 bucks people. i need an album to rock out loud and be a non-track switcher. much like static x's first album, staind's first, korn's first, metallica's master of puppets, paul wall's people's champ, ect ect.

im also into some of the new-rock bands not just the old ones. and i occasionally like a rapper and what hes got to say/the beats he puts down. so yeah, i have a very diverse music taste ;)

Mmm hmm, I belive that. No, really, I do. I blame Tuomas because he's always been something of an autocrat and I've been in bands where someone who felt they were the "leader" of a band decided that someone else in the band needed to go.

The real kicker is that Nightwish isn't ever going to recover. There are at least a dozen bands out there doing the same exact thing they were, and quite a few who are much better at it than Nightwish. The only things Nightwish had going for them were the big label money (which is going to go away now that they don't have Tarja) and Tarja's voice.

Who knows, it might end up a good thing. Tarja wants to focus on opera and solo work (which is amazing), but it is clear she enjoyed doing a little bit of metal. Maybe she'll end up doing session work for a band that has fewer requirements on her time. Can you imagine what it would sound like if she did a little bit of work with Therion?

I've heard people argue this the other way, too. That it doesn't matter if she's there or not, because Tuomas was the best part and singers of Tarja's calibre are a dime a dozen if you know where to look.

Sure, Tuomas could find another singer of Tarja's calibre. The problem is, anyone in the sphere would have salary demands that Tuomas would have trouble meeting and would have the exact same time problems that lead Tuomas to boot Tarja. Tuomas is never going to find someone of Tarja's quality that is willing to give up several prime years of solo and theater work in order to tour with a rock band. Two or three years of grueling tour conditions, living out of a bus, away from friends and family, with no chance of doing legitimate opera or solo work and very little continuing vocal training is not an attractive deal when the compensation is (at best) somewhere in the neighborhood of less than 20% of 90% of less than 60% of the door and merch (after expenses) on venues that hold 500-2000.

Nightwish is not yet a successful enough band to afford comfortable accomidations, especially on an American tour (which is what Tuomas wants). Breaking into the mainstream American market is going to take a band like Nightwish several years of aggressive recording and touring with a major label behind them. I honestly doubt Universal is going to invest the money in pushing what has just become an unproven act.

As for the talent of Tuomas, well, let me paint a quick picture for you. Think of Nightwish's sound before Universal sent in a good producer and the money for an orchestra. Think of the sound on Wishmaster or Oceanborn. Now take away Tarja's voice. Now compare those songs to Tristania, Rhapsody, Synergy, Therion, Stratovarius, Lacuna Coil or any of the other power/prog/goth metal acts trying to cross over. Now put it next to Cradle of Filth with the big money Roadrunner is pouring into them, H.I.M. with the money Warner is pouring in, or the pure reputation and skill of Blind Guardian. Without Tarja, Nightwish is just another average act in a genre that has a glut of talent.

Some recording labels decided not to use them, some only use them in certain markets. Quite a few labels just don't care enough to check. All in all, I think its a great system because now I don;t have my jewel cases marred by some ugly little ode to the nanny state.
