Oscar Nominations out--who do you like?

For the first time in, I guess forever, I've seen more than half the films nominated for Best Picture (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11110934/). Here's the list:
Brokeback Mountain
Crash
Good Night and Good Luck
Capote
Munich

So, which ones have you seen, and which one do you think will win?

Take the poll.

Oh, and feel free to discuss the other nominees, available at the link above.

I haven't seen any of them. Hollywierd, being the most "politically correct" location in the Land of Fruits and Nuts, will be forced to choose Brokeback Mountain as the winner, regardless of anything. Sad, very sad.

Well, the Screen Actors Guild didn't choose it, and they're part of the "fruits and nuts" crowd. They went with Crash, which I haven't seen and don't know the first thing about. Having seen Brokeback Mountain, I can tell you that it's a worthy nominee, but it's not a shoo-in, because the other two nominees I've seen were also terrific films. Any of the three could win and I'd be pleased.

Nah ... it'll be a quandry ... Capote was openly gay, not closeted like them cowboys, but then again, there's plenty of anti-American propoganda in "Good Night and Good Luck" and terrorists are portrayed as something other than foaming at the mouth jihadist monsters in "Munich" .... so, by your logic and hatred of Hollywood, heads will collectively implode. :p

Anyway ... I'd personally go with "Good Night and Good Luck". Damn fine film. The Academy, though, traditionally frowns on historical or bio-pics. I believe the Oscar will go to "Crash".

Ah, classic Eutruscian Cali-phobia. I guess we can now call the south the land of inbreds and racists...ah regionalism and reductivism...intelectual short cuts for those who need them...

Of course "Brokeback Mountain" will win because of political correctness, because even though you haven't seen any of the films it can't possibly be that a director that has already won the award in the past for a genre of movie that would normally not even be considered actually made a good movie. No, it has to be 'political correctness' and 'fruits and nuts.' After all, you haven't seen any of the movies so you should know.

Because Chinese Ang Lee is soooo Hollywood. Now, roll your eyes or sigh or use that stupid fish slapper and come up with some reason why I should totally be okay with your ridiculous reduction like it was all in my head...I seem to remember when you actually used to try...though maybe that's just wishfull thinking.

It's a good wash of films this year. I haven't seen all of them but none of them I've wanted to avoid. It's actually not been a bad year for movies. I don't always watch the Oscars but I might this year.

Aeon Flux was suprisingly good. Too bad the studio ticked off the critics.

King Kong made up for that for me. I loved that. If I get this gig I'm about to take off and go beg for I may have to buy that with my newly found 'disposable income.' I've heard people talk about it, but I thought it was like Bigfoot...

It's nominated for best animated feature, and it was a terrific film as well. I'll be purchasing it when it hits the market. It's up against Corpse Bride and Howl's Moving Castle.

Living in the Hollywood cinema netherworlds that are Europe, I haven't even had the chance to see 4 of the 5 nominees. :(

I saw Crash, though, twice even, and it was by far my favorite film last year.

I'm both a movie and (embarassingly enough*) an awards show junkie, so seeing the nominated movies before the Oscars is a must. Sadly, it's hardly ever possible.

I've been absolutely dying to see Brokeback Mountain ever since I read the novella a few months ago (before the critics went crazy over it, I'd like to point out) and for a tiny, tiny moment, when I read it'd be in theaters here February 23rd, I was absolutely positive that this meant it would be screened at the Berlin Film Festival right before that (they tend to do that) and I'd be able to go to the premiere and see it (and the actors :D).
Then I remembered it had won at Venice, meaning they'd never show it here, and, just like that, my pretty little bubble burst.

And now they even pushed the start date back to March 9th. March fucking 9th. That's after the Oscars. They're trying to kill me.

The only one of the 5 I'm not too keen on (but will of course still go and see) is Capote. Can't say why, though, esp. considering that I loved Capote's "In Cold Blood".

* Although: Jon Stewart! It's Must See TV, this year.

Seriously though, he can give you an update on their earnings, which are really good for an "arthouse movie" like that. Which also means that of course they're not even going to come close to anywhere what Passion made. Pity, really.

Brokeback Mountain is very likely going to win, but in my honest opinion, it should go to Good Night and Good Luck. That was a phenomenal film, and definitely one that should be shown over and over and over in journalism and business schools specializing in entertainment.

Everyone can do it, you just have to go to Boxofficemojo.com (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=brokebackmountain.htm)
What's sad is, I used this site in school and then totally forgot about it until Nazz pointed it out to me when I was trying to look something up. My only real contribution is context. Which isn't much. But that degree has to do something...
(By the way, it's inching towards $52Mil. Not bad for a $14 million dollar independent (something that certainly eats away at everyone's "Hollywood conspiracy myth," since this was made outside the studio system and had a limited opening instead of the 3,000 plus screen opening that studio pictures get. Not really on track for for the $370 mil domestic of Passion...but hey...)

And can you imagine what it'll make when it finally gets released on dvd?
I was talking to an independent filmmaker last week who was having his first movie released in the theaters this April and he was saying that for the most part these days smaller companies are only releasing to the theaters to 'legitimize' the film and in some cases are doing simultanious theatrical/dvd releases. They found that people for the most part immediately know if they're going to see it in the theater or on dvd and they just manage to economize advertising dollars. He said that in some situations, a long theater run can hurt the film because it delays the DVD (which is part of what prompts the simultanious release).

I would expect that the movie will see a sharp spike again this weekend after todays announcement. Which seems odd, who's left to hear about this movie?

If it wins, there will be yet another and final spike. It'll clear the magic $100mil...Focus moves up a rung.

I think Mark Cuban's company is doing that. He's part owner of an indy film company--they did the Enron documentary (currently sitting atop my TV in its Netflix envelope), and I read a week or two ago that his company will be doing a simultaneous release for just that reason.

I didn’t see any of them, but I’ll go with Munich because Spielberg is one of my favorite directors and it’s the only one I’m likely to see on DVD someday.

My cynicism can’t allow me not to think that the only reason anybody liked this “Brokeback Mountain” is because it’s about two gay dudes. Personally, I don’t have the stomach for it.

I think the best movie of the year was King Kong, and anybody who disagrees with me can fucking go to hell.

Best Adapted Screenplay: Brokeback Mountain.

To be honest, I think Munich sucked. It was a long movie about nothing, at times it still managed to seem like bits were missing from in between, and the actual issue it was supposed to be about (ie the ethical ramifications of abandoning one's ideals to fight someone) was covered rather poorly.
