The Day After Tomorrow: Yellowstone Volcano

The following is a what-if scenario, based on the very real possibility that the dormant volcano under Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA will errupt. What do you think will happen after and discuss:

"Scientists announced yesterday that the 5.1 Rictor scale earthquake felt through out the Northwestern United States and South Western Canada was only the beginning of what they said is an impending erruption of the volcano underneath Yellowstone National Park. Scientists agree that in all likelihood, much of the United States, Canada, and Mexico would be damaged by the impending erruption, which according to some sources, 'Will make Mount St Helens look like a fire-cracker.'"

Here's an article from National Geographic about it: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2001/08/0828_wireyellowstone.html

Eh, I got nothing.

Based on the previous patterns of erruptions, we'd be missing more than the state of Wyoming. And the ash from the erruption would probably lead us into a new mini ice age.

And right-wing America would then exclaim:

"See, we told you global warming was crap!"

From what I have read and been told, if yellowstone erupts...well say good bye to the good life...Major crop failures, lots of death..Ash carried in the atmosphere for a long while..It is one of the major doomsday type scenarios..Its not something to take lightly.

Well, for one thing, a lotta people in the Rocky Mountains of the US and Canada would be dying.... And more would have died at the instant the volcano errupted.

We got people that seem to be benefitting EXTREMELY well from the Homeland Security allotments. Thanks again Cheney. *grr*
Also, i'm aware that some of that situation is being dealt with, but it still chagrins me considerably noting how bad so many other things are doing.

Same here. And agreed. If the Yellowstone Super Volcano goes, modern civilization can pretty much kiss ass its good bye. That eruption would throw up so much dust it would block the sun's rays long enough to kill most of the world's base food supply, plants. Death would just go up the food chain.

There are reasons why such events are called Mass Extinction Events.

Pretty comforting, maybe Bush (or any other warmonger with WMD's[yes we have them but no one else can] for that matter) won't have a chance to start WW3 and bomb us all to hell. YAY. I am so excited. So many possibilities, Day After Tomorrow, The Postman, maybe Waterworld. I really want gills.

It's been suggested that the last time the Yellowstone supervolcano erupted, it wiped out the last of the Dinosaurs.

The last supervolcano of any kind was about 8000 years ago and may have reduced the human population of Earth to less than 1000 individuals.

The Democrats would find some way to blame it on the Chimpy Bushitler junta.
Pat Robertson would say something outlandish and insipid.
The Palestinians would shoot their AK's into the air in celebration.
Europeans would blame the US for global cooling.
The UN would snap into action and begin preparations to have talks about forming a roundtable to discuss a timetable for meetings to negotiate a treaty to ban global cooling.

Yep. And I kind of try not to think about it, because this: I mean really. What WOULD anyone do...? is true. There's nothing anybody can do about it, and I don't mean "nothing" as in "Eh, screw global warming, there's nothing we can do about it" but as in completely and absolutely nothing.

So basically, it boggles the mind. Sure, we know about ice ages and dinosaurs and what not, but who can seriously picture something like that happening, say, next month? Not me, for one.

Since we'd probably have months of foreknowledge before the volcano goes off (much like Mt St Helens) I would predict the following:

The areas in the immediate vicinity are evacuted, resulting in large populations of American refugees on the East Coast, Mexico, Canada, Alaska, and Hawai'i (with smaller populations of refugees in Japan, Australia, and Europe).

The volcano errupts.

Refugee populations begin to breed more and more violent crime, perhaps to the point of terrorism. The United States government attempts to recall troops from Afghanistan, Iraq, &c. In response to increased domestic terrorism, civil rights in the United States are temporarily suspended. Similar measures are enacted in nations hosting American refugees.

Faced with the possibility of the PRC engaging in a war of aggression, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and South Korea (along with more minor players) band together to form a Pacific/Indian Ocean Alliance, perhaps under the sway of the Indian government.

Global temperature drops and decreased sunlight caused by the ash lead to world wide food shortages, economic depression, and the associated violence. In the Russian Federation, the Soviet Union is revived, while the European Union gradually starts to become more centralized. The PRC, facing similar internal pressures as that of the former Soviet Republics, turns its army on its people before turning outward in an attempt to subdue Taiwan, who is left to fend for themselves. Japan's constitution is altered to allow them to possess a true military.

Faced with a possible conflict with China, North Korea (reluctantly) joins the Indian-centric Pacific alliance, finally reuniting the two Koreas. Troops mass on both sides of the Yalu River, as Taiwanese patriots fight the invading PLA to a standstill. The new Soviet Russia starts to reclaim its former satteilite nations, secretly allying itself with the PRC. The EU demands that the Russians cease their expansion immediately.

As troops from the Indian Alliance mass to counter possible Chinese aggression along the Sino-Indian and Sino-Korean borders, Russian troops build up in the Ukraine, while EU-affiliates build up their own forces in Eastern Europe. All the while, the United States and her nuclear arsenal have been completely taken out of the picture.

In the mean time.... Through out Africa and the Middle-East tin-pot dictators line up in all out slugging fests in attempts to unite their regions, with India, the EU, China, and Russia eying the Middle-East and her oil greedily. With the exception of American troops stationed in Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, Hawai'i, and Alaska, the United States is largely impotent through out the period, and wracked by internal strife.

I think it would be safe to say that civilization would go to hell in a handbasket. But I guess the positive side of all of this war would be that fewer people would starve to death.

Here is a timeline of humanity up until 1 BC. It pretty much agrees with every timeline i've ever seen, so I'd guess your date of 8000 years ago is off, or maybe you quoted the loss of human life too low?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/horizon/1999/supervolcanoes.shtml

This fits your statement, except it was closer to 80 000 years ago.

Here is an interesting timeline that outlines food consumption for primate/humans. It interesting that they totally miss the whole era of the last super Volcano, but as you can see, there were no "modern" humans living at that time.
