Emily Dickinson: Overrated?
Seriously, what’s the big deal? She writes down some rants that barely make sense and puts them in a pattern. What the fuck? That’s poetry?
Personally, I dismiss her work as the pathetic winings of an emo prototype only popular because its author was a woman writer from that time period.

Overrated? Probably. But tell that to thousands of pre-pubescent girls that absolutely adore her poetry.
I am so depressed
I reach upward in desperation
But no-one's impressed
With my hopeless situation
I drop to the floor
A marionette with her strings cut
I cannot deal with this anymore
Where my lonely room remains forever
shut
Sweet Jesus. Break out the sleeping pills and the bottle of vodka. Mama, I'm coming home.

Dickinson is not my favorite, but there's no denying her genius.
That said, if you hate her and are still forced to read her, here's a hint to liven it up a bit. Practically all of her poems, because they are written in strict ballad stanza, can be sung to the tune of the theme from Gilligan's Island. Try it.
Because I could not stop for Death,
He kindly stopped for me;
The carriage held but just ourselves
And Immortality.
We slowly drove, he knew no haste,
And I had put away
My labor, and my leisure too,
For his civility.
We passed the school, where children strove
At recess, in the ring;
We passed the fields of gazing grain,
We passed the setting sun.
Or rather, be passed us;
The dews grew quivering and chill,
For only gossamer my gown,
My tippet only tulle.
We paused before house that seemed
A swelling of the ground;
The roof was scarcely visible,
The cornice but a mound.
Since then 'tis centuries, and yet each
Feels shorter than the day
I first surmised the horses' heads
Were toward eternity.

I did as you asked, kind sir. And it worked just as you said it would. Unfortunately, I ripped my bodice on the final stanza.

Yo st8t outta Amherst, teh 1337 hax0r repaying the f@v0r bitch.
As a current resident of Amherst and a collegate participant in the many educational institutions of the area I find Emily Dickenson to be a literary genius (of her era and ours). If "emo" means living a decade writing poems in her room alone which still hold sway over the poetic mind of not only the United States but all of the literary world, than yes she is a "wining" prototype of "emo" excellence.
It is important to note that Emily never wanted her work to be published. It was published solely for it's literary merit. It was the first of its kind and was thereafter a struggle to reproduce. If you could read a book you would easily see that you were born from an incestious marriage. pwned.:gundge:

My poetry students always love that little bit. And now, to really fry your noggin, try singing it to the tune of Amazing Grace. Or even better, sing Amazing Grace to the theme from Gilligan's Island. That's even weirder.
This term, I'll be spending some time on how the backing music can change the interpretation of lyrics from a poetic standpoint, and you can bet that I'll be using this as an example.

You have the right to your opinion, however wrong.
If "emo" means living a decade writing poems in her room alone
It does.

because feminists cream their pants over any femal author before 1900, becasue there were so few of them.
"emo" excellence.
No such thing.

I know all about that. I also know that her poetry wasn't popular until the feminist movement took off. Not that I have anything against feminism, it did kill that bastard chivalry, after all.

Feminists creaming? Are you jealous?
No such thing.
As I can tell from your spelling you are retarded or drunk. But I will give you the benifit of the doubt and assume you are just speaking from the depths of your asshole.

Step off the bandwagon you slutty troll. If popular meant good, than Brittney Spears' pregnancy wouldn't make me wish I ran an abortion clinic. Judge on merit not on the shit you manage to spill from your gullet.

You would know. Rather than discussing the merit of the topic you insist on diverting the thread to suit your own needs. Those needs being:
You are yourself incestuous.
You were a spelling B champ from your early years and were beaten mercilessly every day since.
or...
Your father failed to push your mother down the stairs before your birth.

Good job. You only lapsed into street slang once. Much better. You are a true vulgarian, aren't you? A veritable connoissuer of insulting terminology. Your mother would be so proud.
Dickinson is a good poet. Never said she wasn't. But great? Nope. Not even close. I just think she is one horribly depressing read.

I'm assuming you think "champ" is street slang. You have probably never made it out of you front door with out getting your pussy ass kicked in. Vulgarian? Is that a club or organization? If it is I will gladly join on the sole precedent of having a clan of vicious bastards assault your ignorant and sadly misshapen body into oblivian. Correct sir, she is. Keep sluring the words of an idiot.
Way to state your point well after the voices from your asshole have ceased. Next time, may I suggest making your point before you make yourself into a total queef. You may find your future mate posing at www.virginhunter.com ....nice try, lonely.

I hope you fight better than you spell, my collegiate chum. Every time you open your mouth, you invite a beat down. And I also note that you seem to know that one particular website quite well. Find that one while you were boning up on your next self-pelvic exam at college, did you? What, auto erotic asphyxiation not good enough for you? I'd be happy to kick that chair out from under you.
I'm done with you. Forgive me if I don't respond to any more of your blather.

Damn you The Nazz! Now I won't be able to read Dickinson without laughing.
It's like that Shakespearean sonnet, I can't read that without laughing either.

Good one. You found a spelling mistake and used it to escape open debate, bravo. Actually it isn't a valid website, I made sure before posting. If you care to use your intelligence beyond the simple act of memorizing words post another reply. I assume you won't though because you have not validly debated a single point I have made this entire time.
P.S. Thank you for amusing me with your shitty knowledge of everything besides the use of www.dictionary.com. If you care to enter the world of argument please spare us all and I'll forward you the price of a cheap razor.

I sit alone in that darkened room
Lost all hope, and am completely bereft
I pray my end is coming soon
For fania has failed his oral Test
Could all of this have come to pass
Over such a pale, wan, and forgotten lass?
I'd rather he saved his best for last
Instead, he was lost in that windy Cacophony
That issued from his ass
Goodnight, all.
