A plane crashed in the northwest suburb of Wheeling tonight, killing four people aboard, federal aviation authorities said.
The twin-engine Cessna went down near the intersection of Alderman Lane and South Wolf Road at around 6:30 p.m., according to a Wheeling police department dispatcher.
The plane was coming in for a landing at Palwaukee Municipal Airport when it went down about a mile south of the airport, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory.
She said the agency does not know where the plane was coming from, but that the four people on board were killed.
Ben Zheng, 32, said he heard the plane come down about 100 yards from his company, Unistar Inc., 1682 Wolf Rd., Wheeling.
"I didn't hear a plane, I just heard a boom, I didn't realize it was a plane crash," Zheng said. Zheng said he was unable to see the crash site, but emergency equipment was on the scene.
