The one band I always wanted to see live was Queen (since they're my favourite ever band, oddly enough). Sadly, I never got to see the real thing, but I did see Brian May and Roger Taylor with Paul Rodgers, and yeah, it really got my adrenaline going. I suspect that if that particular set-up did a studio album, the live performance would win. However, I suppose it's not just about their performance at the gig, but the atmosphere in general.

Live music can really butcher good songs, I think, but a good live performance can really enhance them. I wasn't dying about HIM when I went to see them, for example, but I certainly came out of the gig a fan. They had a fantastic stage presence.

By the way, did you see AC/DC live? I am extremely jealous if so!

Machine Head are amazing live. as are Korn.... really gets the adrenaline going... more so than with other more "technically proficeint" bands like Metallica or Megadeth

as for on wax... tough one. too much too choose from. sometimes its awesome licks from hendrix or clapton, or moore, sometimes its just some drum n bass i'm listening to, though often - for an almost gaurenteed kick - i'll listen to testament or pitchshifter. volume is important here :P

So many to list. Queen, Led Zep, The Doors (if we're going back in time to see them live). Also Rammstein, The Haunted (the're going to be in Melbourne soon! Kanabia, where are you?!), Sepultura. The Tea Party were great live too.

Wouldn't mind seeing Cypress Hill either for a change of pace.

Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple were incredible.

Iron Maiden sucked live.

Ozzfest always kicks ass.

Sublime wasn't bad, at some oftheir shows they gave out weed.

So I'd have to go with Sublime, to go to their shows.

Check out my band please :D

Mudhoney, The Hives, and The Stooges all did it for me when I saw them live.

The Haunted (the're going to be in Melbourne soon! Kanabia, where are you?!)

I would say that the most amped up I have ever been on music was '87: Pink Floyd's Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour at the Hoosierdome in Indiannapolis. The one song they did for the encore was "Run Like Hell". Pitch black. First five seconds of music caused every fiber of my being to scream "YES!!"

Nothing else has come close.

For me it was the Who the first time I saw them (also in '80), indoors, before they started playing stadiums, back when Pete still destroyed a guitar every show... 5:15, Baba O'Riley, Behind Blue Eyes...

damn! I wish i were you then. Got some bootleg DVDs of two Wall shows...soooooo badass!

Waters was a selfish asshole IMO. I liked Division Bell a lot better than Waters' solo crap from the Wall and Final Cut.

I wish I would've saw Queen too. I've missed quite a few bands. I didn't see Ac/Dc with Bon, no :( . I was 6 at his death. But I've seen em with Brian, still a good show if you're an Ac/Dc fan.

Cypress Hill is a great live band. Never seen a show of theirs that didn't just absolutely KILL.

However -
Nothing gets my blood pumping like some good, vintage MINISTRY.
Oh Yes. And the Dead Kennedy's, before they lost Jello Biafra.

I've seen Metallica live three times - bloody brilliant without exception. Bon Jovi were fantastic too, if a little tacky ;) Going back to see them in May. I also thought The Darkness were class, silly as they are. Going back to see them on Sunday :)

Iron Maiden sucked live.I saw them twice; the second time, they were just OK, but the first time, I've got to say I thought they were great.

I wish I would've saw Queen too. I've missed quite a few bands. I didn't see Ac/Dc with Bon, no :( . I was 6 at his death. But I've seen em with Brian, still a good show if you're an Ac/Dc fan.Yeah, I'm sure it's not quite the same, but I'd still love to see them. They've not played local to me in recent times though :( Maybe one day.

meh, i thought they were lacklustre. seen em twice and they... just... didn't have something. the something that makes a live show more than music and makes it great. they didn't have that and were just trotting off their greatest hits one after the other, looking tired. :(

kinda the same with maiden. maybe i'm just not a fan of massive gigs or something - best shows i've ever been to are relatively small (5000-ish) ones with the likes of God Forbid and Machine Head. i loved the download metal festival the other year - massive gig, obviously - and enjoyed the big gig experience for MH and Korn (and Damageplan, Soulfly, etc) immensely but thats probably cos i was high :P
by the time metallica came on we'd been waiting round for hours cos lars was feeling pookey, and the high had worn off... and when thousands of people swarm in and push you out to the side of the stage from where you've been waiting at the centre for hours, thats kinda annoying. however, that was the one time when they've played live without lars and they used other people like dave lombardo form slayer and joey from slipknot (awesome with 'tallica!!)... but it was still a lacklustre performance overall

wow, quite a rant there...

*snip*Each to their own...I would have said maybe they had an "off day", but if you've seen them twice, that seems a bit too coincidental! I totally understand your point about waiting at the stage and getting pushed away though. At the first and second gig, I was somewhere in the middle, and at the third we were quite near the back, I think, so luckily we didn't have that problem. At the gig nearest after the whole Metallica v Napster fuss, when James introduced Lars, my boyfriend screamed "NAPSTER!" at the top of his voice which was quite funny. We got talking to some decent people as a result of it, so perhaps it's as much the atmosphere as anything else.

Worst live (well, most lacklustre anyway) performance I've seen was Marilyn Manson. He was supporting Maiden at the last gig of their's I saw (August 2005); I'm not a fan of his music really, but I thought he'd put on a good stage show. No chance! He was the epitome of dull in my opinion.

Nasenbluten - I'm usually angry for at least 24 hours after listening to a few of their songs ;)

Other than that, um... The Boredoms shows used to rock, they demolished half a building with a JCB during one gig, and Melt Banana are pretty damn good live too.

yeah it was probably the atmosphere as well... it was raining and dark, and nobody else around was getting any kind of pit going... and i'd been standing up without a break seeing bands for about 8 hours already, and hadn't had a joint in hours... and we'd all been separated by then cos of the crowd. all in all, not a great gig but, cos of all that, my memory is probably just really negative :P

and the other time (can't remember if it was before or after) i was really going through a rough patch with clinical depression, so that probably didn't help. stood at the back of that gig in london just feeling like crap and wanting to go home. :(

however, lol @ the "napster!" comment :p

(*is glad he hasn't seen Marilyn Manson live...*)Speaking of him, just saw this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4665064.stm) on the BBC website. MM playing Lewis Carroll?!! That's bizarre in and of itself, but if he's as uninspiring as an actor as he was a live performer, the film is going to be crap!

The Black Crowes with Jimmy Page was the best show I've ever been to. They played Zeppelin songs the entire show and it was the closest I'll ever come to seeing Zep live.

Lately, some old school Ice Cube or A Tribe Called Quest gets me going.

I reckon the early hardcore acts would have been absolutely brilliant live.

I had a partial video of an early Dead Kennedys gig (1979), and they sucked. They got much better as time went on (I had a video from 1985 that was *great*), though. The Damned were even worse live (even earlier Hardcore), though I've told you about that. :p

What gets me "up"? Husker Du, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Ramones, AC/DC, and other similar bands. Husker Du above all others, though, because their live videos are fucking incredible.

It's the best speedy Pop Rock ever. But, Husker Du still outclass them in almost every respect.
