Fluorescent Lamps

Greetings Generalites! I am writing to ask you to help the world by changing all your incandescent lamps to fluorescent ones. There are so many benefits, it's amazing that people aren't swarming to buy them. Maybe it is just sheer lazyness. Although they may cost more than incandescent lamps, they last 8-10 (even more) times longer and use far less electricity. They have a funky, aesthetic look (to some like me) and do contribute, although very little, to vitamin D production in the skin. So go out and buy the bulbs that corresponds to your wattage needs. The packages say what equivalent they are. Ask someone who works there for help, if you need. Can't we all do this one little thing to help save electricity. It isn't that hard and you have to go out and buy incandescent lamps anyway, so just get fluorescent ones instead.

(Please don't be an ass and say no...unless you have a real good reason that occupies several sentences.)

I don't know what you're on, but it must be powerful.

well ok its not FULLY florescent. its just as fully florescent as i feel its practical to make it.

so my outside motion detector lights are halogen and the pretty globe lights in the bathroom vanities are incandescent.

the rest are florescent.

it takes a while to get used to the different color light given off by florescents. its a bit "officish".

it IS nice to not have to change the bulbs (yet).

I'm ON a chair ON the second floor of my house.

I can see them flicker. So no.
Are you sure they are the right wattage? Make sure they are the equivalent. Other than that, some fixtures just don't like them

I'm not a fan of fluorescent lighting. I don't like the color it gives off. Some day I'll probably switch, but not any time soon.

Fluorescent lighting is known to be a big problem for migraine sufferers. For some, just sitting under such lights will trigger a headache. I'm one of those people. Of course, I seldom have the lights on anyway, and I'm thinking about switching my reading lamp to a few small LEDs -- they look much cooler, and the light seems to stay focused better.

Until they make something better and cheaper than fluorescent lighting, I'll stick to sunlight and the glow of my screen.

I use special wide-spectrum flourescents in my bedrooms and the kitchen. Those are the most used bulbs in he house. The bathroom and living room are still primarily lit with incandescents. But their replacements will be flourescent.

The colors from these bulbs mimics natural sunlight. I love em. :)

LEDs will eventually be the way of the future, but i like those little spiral flourescent lights that fit perfectly into the normal lightbulb fixtures.

Fluorescent light makes people look sickly and ill, destroys the will to live, and is the hallmark of cheapass employers worldwide. Like Hell I'd inflict that on myself or my loved ones. I'd honestly prefer a lifetime of sitting in the dark if my sole option was to instead live with fluorescent lighting at home.

That is a massive sacrifice to ask.

I cant stand Fluorescent, its complete shit triggers a headache for me and looks very harsh and not natual.

incandescent lighting has a much softer tone to it, and is alot more relaxing.

The fluorescent light only saves energy if it replaces a light that's usually left on for more than about 15 minutes at a time. If it replaces a light that's left on for short periods of time, it ends up using more energy

Those are even better, but there isn't much of a market for them yet I think and they aren't cheap enough yet and can't be installed easily yet. But they are very bright. I've wanted to make a blinder gun with them.

Actually it's more an indication that they just waste energy. They should be turning my electricity in to light, not heat!

Anyone who has studied simple machines knows that heat is an indicator of inefficiency.

exactly. some 90% of all energy that goes into an incandescent bulb is turned into heat. that's because the filimant literally burns, which produces heat and as a biproduct, it glows.

Try 'daylights' instead of the usual 'cool white'. You can find them for most tube applications easy enough. Tougher for compact applications.

I haven't had any luck with those spiral screw in floresents. I put a "60 watt" bulb into my 60 watt lamp. Within a few miniutes it went *pop* and quit working. The "100 watt" bulb I put in my 100 watt lamp lasted all of a day before going out.

Those bulbs are expensive. I'm not spending any more money on them. I'd be willing to give them another try. But not on my dime.

hmmm, i get them for relatively cheap and work fine in normal fixtures. I guess I'm just lucky! :D Got three of em going right now!

yeah, i had a natural light tube in the bathroom fixture of my last place. i dont have any tube fixtures in this house, all compact bulbs, ill look for daylights when i have to replace them.

i hope you took them back to the store! they are much too expensive to have that kind of experience with them and not get your money back.

Call an electrician and ask wtf causes that. Maybe step down to the next lowest wattage.

Here are the LED bulbs I was talking about for my reading lamp. The one I've got now reflects the light all over the room, and I tend to leave it on all night -- which wakes me up now and then. I'm used to sleeping in a room twice the size with a colored light shining toward the opposite end of the room. Hell, the glow from the face of the clocktower near my window kept me up some nights.

And I'm about to put a shoe through my roommate's alarm clock.

I'm not ever going to use fluorescent lamps Sel Appa, because they trigger clinical depression episodes in me - don't know if that's a common or an idiosyncratic reaction to them, but it rules them out for my household.

much better idea: dont use any lightsources.
rise and go to bed with the sun! you will save tons of money on lightbulbs, wiring and electricity and you will protect the environment by reducing emissions and light-pollution, which can screw up insects and turtles.
go dark!

actually, as i recall it's closer to 95%.
and they're not burning, they put neon/argon in the bulbs to try to stop that from happening, the idea is that the inefficiency of the filament causes it to produce heat which causes it to get so hot that it glows, just like an extrememly hot piece of metal glows when you're heating it so that is becomes softer and more malleable
